Study showsĀ MillennialĀ Men do not think ofĀ women as their equals
A majority of millennial men failed to see women as equals, according to the study, which looked at how college biology students viewed their classmatesā intelligence and achievements, the Harvard Business Review reported.
Among the findings:
In every biology class surveyed, a man was seen as the most celebrated student, even in instances where women earned significantly better grades.
Men were also found to overestimate the intelligence of their male classmates over that of female ones.
Men continued exaggerating their assessments of the male peers, despite unequivocal evidence that their female peers were performing better.
Women, conversely, werenāt found to display a bias: Their assessments of fellow classmates tended to be spot-on.
The National Institutes of Health researchers pointed out that female STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) majors drop out at significantly higher rates than their male counterparts.
āThe reasons for this difference are complex, and one possible contributing factor is the social environment women experience in the classroom,ā they wrote.
Still, scores of men are under the impression that theyāve become the target of reverse sexism. Conservative columnist John HawkinsĀ rantedĀ in Town Hall last year:
āMen have it rougher in America than most people realize. In part, thatās because theyāre one of the few groups (along with white people, conservatives, and Christians) itās cool to crap on at every opportunity. In case you havenāt noticed, thereās a nonstop assault on masculinity in America.ā
But research has confirmed the reality of gender bias against women. A staggering 90 percent of women reported experiencing gender harassment in the workplace, a 2010 University of Michigan study found. The results suggest that such harassment had the purpose of driving women out of jobs and not the generally assumed motivation of trying to draw women into relationships.
āOne could argue that, in these instances, āsexual harassment is used both to police and discipline the gender outlaw: the woman who dares to do a manās job is made to pay,āā the researchers wrote,Ā quoting an article by Katherine M. Franke,Ā an associate professor of law at the University of Arizona College of Law.
As for millennial men specifically, they have been less accepting of female leaders than their older male counterparts, according to a 2014 survey of more than 2,000 adults residing in the United States, the Harvard Business Review reports.
Half of Millenial men said their careers would take priority over their partnersā.Ā
Three-fourths of women, on the other hand, said their careers would be at least as important as their husbandsā.
oh look its the shit women have been saying all the damn time and antifeminists stamp their feet and cry about
āWho can prevent all this from happening? The people. Public figures, journalists, musicians, actors, athletes, scientists, doctors, bloggers, stand-ups, Tiktokers, and more. Ordinary people. Thatās one tiny part of the problem, but itās not the issue. Thatās not why the government refuses to consider canceling student loan debt. Itās actually a lot worse than anyone imagines.
The reason the government refuses to even entertain student loan forgiveness is because of something called SLABS. What are SLABS, you ask? Good question. Because the world of finance really does not want you to know this! SLABS are Student Loan Asset Backed Securities. Sounds like a bunch of confusing terms that regular people canāt understand, right? Itās supposed to.
A lot of you were too young to remember what happened in 2008, and what exactly the crisis was that brought the entire economy to its knees. 1 million people lost their homes. Itās because the mortgage industry was taking the mortgages (loans) that individuals opened, split them into tiny little pieces, bundled them together with other tiny little pieces of other peopleās loans, andļæ¼ sold them off. A huge industry was created that not only bought little pieces of peopleās mortgages, but also made bets on whether or not those underlying securities (pieces of mortgage loans) would fail or succeed. It didnāt take long beforeļæ¼ the bets on the loans outsized the actual loans themselves - sometimes by a magnitude of thousands.
I know this is complicated, but hang in there. Hereās Selena Gomez in āThe Big Shortā to explain that betting a little better: ļæ¼
Okay, so youāve got lots of people betting on mortgages. See what happens next, is that the banks run out of qualified people for mortgages. Thereās only so many people who had jobs that paid them enough and credit scores high enough to be deemed worthy. ļæ¼But they want to keep their cash cow going! What to do?
Of course, the way this problem was solved, was to hand out mortgages to everyone like free T-shirts. No job? No credit? No way to pay that mortgage we just gave you? No problem. They were making more money on the bets than on the underlying loans. They didnāt give a shit if you defaulted. They were making money on you whether you paid or not. And they didnāt care if you destroyed your life and your credit and your family because the financial industry was raking in massive piles of cash by selling and betting on peopleās home loans. Eventually the house of cards came tumbling down, there was a massive foreclosure crisis, the industry was found to be operating completely fraudulentlyļæ¼, and a million people lost their houses. Large financial institutions received a bail-out that we the taxpayers paid for. The individual families who got exploited and fucked? Got nothing.
So what does this have to do with student loans? Excellent question. The same thing that happened with mortgage loans being split into tiny pieces, bundled, and sold off has also happened with student loans. These bundles are called SLABS. Student loan asset-backed security. But wait! āAsset-backedā?? What asset? The asset is ostensibly...your degree.
This is now a potentially bigger problem than even the housing crisis in 2008: because back in ā08, if you defaulted (stopped paying) on your mortgage loan, there was a physical asset to seize: your house. You canāt seize somebodyās English degreeļæ¼ if they stop paying. This is why itās nearly impossible to discharge any student loan debt, ever: because the industry making money off of student loans is making outsized bets that are larger than the underlying assets. Just like in 2008. If student loans were forgiven across the board, the ripple effect would capsize the domestic economy. Your $20,000 in student loans? Could represent $2 million in bets made on that loan.
This has already become an enormous hot potato between financial institutions as student loan repayment was paused during the pandemic. Suddenly thereās no payoff for these bets institutions are making on your student loans. Thereās also no collateral they can repossess. What they thought was a profitable bet to exploit students and keep people in wage slavery forever, is shakier and shakier. When it finally bursts and goes tits-up, you can bet that the people who bought tiny pieces of your loans and then gambled it away will be the ones receiving a (tax-payer funded) bail-out. Not the students. And itās already starting to go tits-up.
America: weāre #1. š¤®
Absolutely fantastic Investopedia article about SLABS
Reblogging for that addition, especially for the last sentence of the article:
āHowever, whether this industry can sustain itself will come down to whether enough borrowers can eventually pay their debt obligations, and that is looking like a slim prospect.ā
I also liked the āImportant: Because federally guaranteed student loans are back-stopped and qualify riskier borrowers, they may promote moral hazard or excessive risk-taking by both financial institutions in SLABS as well as individual student borrowersā bit.
That was a good bit.
Ok so can someone explain to me how cryptocurrency pollutes? Like what crazy calculations are they running that they need enough brainpower to significantly effect things? Like Iām assuming whatās causing the pollution is increased electricity consumption but⦠how does sending lil pretend money tokens back and forth or whatever cause so much pollution?
Also, what the fuck is āminingā? How d'you mine⦠like bitcoin is not a naturally occurring resource, and I assume that you canāt just make it, cause that would make it instantly worthless⦠help?
So you get ācoinsā as a reward for performing the cryptographic calculations necessary to update the public ledger which is the blockchain. This is, by design, an increasingly complex and resource intensive process to slow down the collection of (intentionally finite) coins.
So every transaction with bitcoins requires the ledger to be updated with the current ownership of every already existing bitcoin, which also requires encrypting and decrypting a bunch of information and sharing it across the public ledger. So every transaction made with bitcoins increases the energy requirements of updating the ledger making it harder and harder to complete the latest version and get the coin which is a reward for doing that work.
Thereās a lot I donāt fully understand myself but the long and short of it is that the actual value of any crypto currency is pretty much just what people agree on, except instead of a fiat currency where a government says itās worth something and a mint that makes physical currency, thereās a bunch of nerds who agree that solving certain math problems is worth rewarding.
Feeling like adding on for a bit of context, I know itās kind of hard to understand how mining for really any kind of crypto is hard to imagine, but seeing what a bitcoin mining facility looks like for the first time really helped me realize just how energy intensive it is.
See all these warehouses? Theyāre quite literally filled to the brim with specialized computers that do nothing but mine, each one filled with thousands of these computers, just row after row of this:
So all the power consumption winds up adding up like crazy.
Yep, thatās why cryptocurrency and NFTs are considered major contributors to pollution ā because the energy needs of all those computers doing the calculation are equivalent to a medium sized country. Currently, crypto consumes more energy than Argentina.
Guess whatās inside a lot of mining rigs? Gowan, guess.
Graphics cards!Ā
Lots and lots of these puppies side by side, spinning their little fans as fast as they can go because as it turns out: GPUs are perfect for doing the calculations required for mining cryptocurrency.
Which means amateur miners buy a lot of these things.
So many, in fact, that there is now (May 2021) a world-wide shortage of NVIDIA and AMD graphics cards and building a new gaming rig is damn near impossible because of the shortage.Ā
OR you can pay a ridiculously inflated price by GPU scalpers on eBay.
Seriously. Places that sell GPUs impose quantity limits because if they donāt⦠some crypto asshole will buy out their entire stock in one go.
But theĀ āgoodā news is that the professional miners (like the Bitmain site up there, in the photos) use dedicated ASIC mining rigs which donāt use consumer GPUs.Ā But (bad news) they DO use the same sort of chips that NVIDIA & AMD rely on to make their products, which just starves the supply pipeline at a different point.
Bottom line: not only does cryptocurrency mining consume terawatts of electricity, it also consumes megatons of computer hardware. Which is expensive to produce (in resource terms, like rare metals, petroleum, water, electricity, paper) and will, someday, require even MORE resources to recycle. Or else it ends up in a landfill.
Note that current dedicated mining rigs are so highly specialized they are useless for anything other than mining. They cannot be easily repurposed toĀ (say) sequence DNA or fold proteins for miracle cures.
What a waste.
was anyone gonna tell me that some nerds peepee poopoo ācurrencyā is the reason why graphics cards are sold out everywhere or was i supposed to find that out from comments under a screenshot from twitter user whoreganic cop puncher explaining how bitcoin is just an artificially complicated math problem
Also Iāve read be very wary about buying used graphic cards cause thereās a chance itās one thatās mostly heavily used from one of these bastards. These thing are very heavily used so a used one sold by one of these guys would be on its last leg of life from being on 24/7
Make sure thereās a return policy just be very careful if youāre buying used.
To be more fair than Crypto miners deserve, theyāre only one of the factors driving the current chip shortage.
The other issues are both related to the pandemic. The first one is that manufacturing of a many things, especially cars, slowed down quite a bit until recently when the factories reopened. But so many reopened at the same time and went full blast that the demand far outstripped the supply, a supply already reduced by the shutdown of those factories.
The other bottleneck is literal mining. Computer chips rely on silicon and various metals, especially gold and copper to conduct electricity to do their work. In normal times this means that cryptoās environmental impact is even higher than just the energy requirements. But in the meantime the mines and refineries that provide the raw materials were also shut down in many cases due to the pandemic, squeezing the supply further.
Mining shutdowns have also caused a huge shortage of ammunition in the US (brass bullet casings need copper). Which means for anybody wanting to buy consumer electronics of a reasonable complexity youāre competing against both ends of the libertarian spectrum, the crypto techies and the gun nuts.
Really glad someone brought this home to actual mining, and I want to show you what the mines look like:
These are silica mines, necessary for making ALL things requiring silicon, among other things.
These are rare-earth mineral mines.
Both are required for the manufacture of computer technologies. Both requre excavating huge amounts of earth, decimating all life in that area and more often than not, ruining land that is supposed to be stewarded by indigenous people.
Theyāre very, very bad for the environment.
This is where the āonlineā world comes from. Itās not another place. Every transaction, every pixel comes from the ground.
So yeah, crypto mining is definitely deceptive. That āvalueā isnāt coming from nowhere. Itās ripped from the earth.
Folding Ideas did a really good video on how Bitcoin and NFTs are a) literally a scam and b) basically run by the same people who caused the 2008 financial crash. Itās a long one (I watched it on 1.5x speed) but worth it.
On top of, y'know, killing the planet, theyāre also racist (Iām reposting a link from this post so everything is in one place):
Discover why this is dehumanizing art created by bad actors.
When I first learned about bitcoin I assumed the calculations involved in mining are just stuff necessary for something, idk what, but for something useful, and bitcoin was just created as a way to pay people to generate the calculation power.
But turns out I was young and naive and itās literally all just powering itself creating fake money and real problems.
