A collaborative filmmaking experiment, “Live Your Art,” documents the experience of living and working in Buffalo as an artist. Bringing together four diverse UB artists, the short film is a celebration of creativity across the disciplines. The production team, led by UB filmmaker Mani Mehrvarz, takes cameras into spaces where art is made and then leads viewers out into the city on a search for sources of inspiration, collaboration, and community.

MAKE.MEDIA.MATTER is an exhibition of media art, featuring works from New York based artists. The presented works range from video and media installations to web and machine learning. With an interest in the material turn in media art practice and study, the exhibition explores the relationship between human and machine and their respective constitutions as entangled agencies. Thoughtfully, each work, either individually or in relation to the others in the exhibition, challenges the distinctions between the old and new media with a focus on the materiality of media. Through the course of realization of these projects, the participating artists examined the vast potential of media materiality embodied within video glitch, signal transmission, codes, magnetic storage, and information technology.

Video-mapping and Projection-walk

“Always a double geography, without a single center or fixed borders, the diaspora is best charted as a palimpsest, with multiple centers and capitals and overlapping or porous border zones. One layer of the map corresponds to the nation-state and its citizenry, the other marks the experiential space of diasporic community.” (Carol Zemel 2008)

In this practice, I aimed to create a new space where the city momentarily became like a Cubist construction: a hybrid space of physical/digital materials where images, sounds, and atmospheres of two different geographies mingled and spilled to the ambulatory space of my own body. By doing so, I tended to trouble the actual space with the absented that was recycled by the means of video footage, the projection device, and also my own moving body.

History and Memory Revisiting (2014)

Graduate thesis/project exhibition

The work consisted of several folios of Shahname illustration that were reworked and re-printed. The edited images show the empty scenes. All the personages/actioners in the paintings were removed with editing software and the whole scenes/spaces were left empty of figures. The detached figures were printed on separate cards and installed on the gallery’s wall.
