HaRe Hall Render - Red
May 2020
Hybrid hand drawing and digital render
The first option I created for a hall redesign reached back into the Victorian era for this color design. Rich, dark tones were popular for walls then, partly to express a lavish interior, and partly because coal and oil powered homes created a lot of soot, which dark colors could mask better. Some beautiful San Francisco examples are the Westerfeld House parlor and Fisk dining room.
This selection definitely took on more of a romanticised eclectic approach to the design, as the home is technically Edwardian, the short era starting in the 1900s just after Victorian and ending in the 1910s just before the Roaring 20s burst onto the scene with Modernism. I would love to design a space in this color tone. Red brings such a vibrant energy to a space that would be great for entertaining. If this sparks your interest in Victorian architecture, go check out Open Victorians put on by the Victorian Alliance. Both the Westerfeld and Fisk homes available to explore virtually through their video tour series Diving into the spaces of yesterday is a great way to learn our local stories and how that connects to the San Francisco of today.
