Anyway thatâs why you wear wool and a life jacket babeeeyyyy
The important thing about wool is that it continues to keep you warm even when itâs soaking wet.
Other natural fibers donât do this. In fact, quite the opposite. Campers and boaters are usually familiar with the phrase, âcotton kills.â If youâre wet in cotton or linen, your clothes actually sap heat from your body.
If you sink in a lake in late October like I did today, staying warm is important. I was rescued long before I wouldâve actually died, but cold makes your muscles seize up, which isnât good if you have to swim to land.
Which brings me around to life jackets. If the waterâs cold enough, you may only have five-ten minutes until your muscles seize (today I probably had 40-60, more than enough time to get to land if I hadnât been picked up), and youâll drown.
In a life jacket, even in extremely cold water, you can float semi-conscious for perhaps another 30 minutes or so before you actually freeze to death, which is usually when someone rescues you.
Whatâs more, you probably know that moving around on land warms you up. Jumping jacks, jogging in place, etc.
In water, moving actually makes you colder. You need to stay still curled up in a ball, which you can only do in a life jacket.
In wool AND life jacket, youâre warm, and your headâs above water, which is pretty much your only and entire goal.
If youâre allergic to wool, synthetics are available specifically for this purpose. I know I always say natural fibers are the way to go, but when it comes to safety, wear what protects you!
Yep! A really simple âexperimentâ I learned as a kid and now use in my own courses is sticking your hand in ice water. Compare moving it around in the water to curling it up in a fist. The contrast is stark!
To increase your survival time in on cold water, you want to curl up! If youâre with others, you want to huddle!
Again, both are only possible when wearing a life jacket!
I know a lot of people are reblogging this for writing reference, but I like to believe that 7,000 people on this site were actually continually living in fear about this specific situation and that when the time comes, Iâve prepared them with what they need to know to survive.
Happy Pride
I hope you get all the rest you need. Even if you spent a quieter day and didnât feel productive, please allow yourself to rest without guilt or shame for not âearningâ it. You donât have to burn yourself out to prove that you need rest. Itâs a very human thing to need sleep, to need a break, to need nourishing, to want to take some personal quiet time. Please allow yourself to rest. Even if itâs âtoo earlyâ to go to bed, even if you spent all day in bed trying to recover from anything. If your body needs sleep, please allow yourself to have it, there should be no rules as to earning sleep. Give yourself a break and rest for as long as itâs possible in your daily life. People live very busy lives that have so many obligations, but if itâs possible for you to take a break and rest, please do, because there is no shame in being tired, especially if you have an illness that makes you constantly fatigued. Donât push yourself beyond your limits just to prove that you have earned the right to sleep. You already have that right. Give yourself permission to rest without guilt.
It is always possible to rewatch Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood

the thing about colonialism (or any form of oppression really) is that colonizers might often be perceived as âthe reasonable onesâ. to them, the issue is not as important and relevant, theyâre happy to say that âeveryone has their own truthsâ and âwe can be friends despite political disagreementsâ. meanwhile for the oppressed it's often a matter of life and death, and when it comes to that, people will be angry. learn nuance, don't find yourself valuing collected demeanor above radical righteousness

I love that Leverage really goes out of itâs way to show us that just because you break the ârulesâ, it doesnât mean youâre breaking the rules. Rules and laws and society are all made up, at the end of the day, and all you really have is your own moral compass and sense of justice; is this just to you? Is it right? Should it be OK for companies to put people in insurmountable debt for the rest of their lives just because our medical care is so expensive in this modern day and age? No law or rule should change what you know in your heart is right and wrong, and I think thatâs the key thing that makes someone a good person in my eyes.
#there was a time when parker wouldnât have noticed, #not because she lacked the capacity to care, #but because she had narrowed herself, #to stay alive she cut off as many unnecessary things as possible, #watching her get them all back, #is one of the glories of this show (via @seananmcguire)
Leverage hands down has the best character development Iâve ever seen.
This scene hit me like a brick. My parents were hundreds of thousands of dollars in debt when I was 16 bc Iâd had cancer the year before (my treatment ended up being free but the initial ER bills and such were not).
But somewhere along the line they just⌠Disappeared. My mom says theyâre not being paid and theyâre not in collections. Itâs almost as if someone out there didâŚexactly what Parker did.
Ever since I saw this the first time, Iâve imagined it was Parker doing it. That she and Hardison had a free weekend and decided to take it out on a collections agency. That I was one of the lucky ones who got a little Leverage.
Okay but like yeah, that is actually a thing that happens, albeit not exactly like this. I donât remember the exact process but basically thereâs a booming industry to sell peoples debt - the business you owe money to sells it to someone else for a fraction of the money owed, wipes their hands of the whole affair, and now whoever bought your debt is riding your ass to get you to give the money to the. But itâs also entirely possible for people to just⌠buy up massive amounts of debt for pennies on the dollar, and then just. Forgive it. Because capitalism is a living nightmare, but the system is broken enough that itâs possible to exploit it for good sometimes.
Like, the main reason I know about this is because John Oliver did a piece on debt buying a few years ago, and ended it by revealing that heâd bought 15 million dollars worth of medical debt just so he could forgive all of it. Both to expose how broken the system was because some random fucker like him could buy millions of dollars in peoples debt with zero regulations, and also just to take the record for biggest TV giveaway in history.
A charity where you can do this, right here.
Be Parker! Be somebody elseâs Leverage!
Reblogging for the website.
yes! if you want to help with the medical debt crisis in the US and have some extra money please donate to RIP Medical Debt if you can. Theyâre completely legit and really do what they say - you really CAN relieve an incredible amount of debt for the needy with even a small donation. Iâm a monthly donor and receive a quarterly report of the debt theyâve abolished, and it truly is amazing. Based on those reports the average amount of debt abolished per person is actually I would say about $600 - which means, if youâre doing the math, that with a $6 donation to RIP Medical Debt, you can potentially pull one person out of a poverty spiral - maybe even one family. For six dollars. thatâs a pretty good deal, I think.
RIP Medical Debt is now called Undue Medical Debt!
Undue Medical Debt makes it easy for donors to make an impactful difference in the lives of those struggling with medical debt.
animorphs does not get enough credit for its innovation in the field of platonic willing-manipulation dynamics⌠making peace with being used, using your friends right back, doing it because itâs the only way, doing it because youâre desperate, doing it because you love them, accepting it when and because you trust them, accepting it when and because you donât trust yourself⌠strengthening your connection through it like a really disturbing friendship bracelet⌠loving each other fiercely in and between these moments, caring so, so much for each other, seeking each otherâs company to laugh and play and rest... ignoring the weight of it when you can, feeling it full force when you canât, wearing you down, wearing you down all the time, just another pane of plexiglass separating you from notions of normal, living in that violent dissonance, your whole adolescence in it.

I don't know this sport.
I think it's so funny how we bred JOBS into dogs. I have two shih tzus and they were bred to be lap dogs. All they care about is looking cute and cuddling with people. Meanwhile my grandma has a border collie and that dog needs to feel so useful all the time, he acts like he will pass away if he doesn't have a job to do constantly
On one hand this is extremely fucking funny, but on the other hand, it really boggles my mind how many people punish their dogs for just⌠doing the thing they were bred to do.
Your husky isnât âhyperactiveâ, itâs bred to pull sleds for 8 hours straight and you have it in a 400 sq ft yard.
Your English sheepdog isnât âpushyâ, itâs bred to herd sheep, and you have neither to space nor the herd to allow it.
Your terrier isnât ânippyâ, itâs bred to kill rats and your hamster looks a hell of a lot like one.
Your Catahoula isnât âmean to animalsâ, itâs bred to hunt any and all animals smaller than it, and you didnât acclimate it to your cat.
Your Lhasa Apso isnât âyappyâ, itâs bred to bark at any tiny noise and alert watchmen to intruders
Like Jesus Christ, if you canât provide an environment where your dog canât fulfill its literal life purpose, maybe?? Donât get that dog??? And if you do, maybe know the breed characteristics so you can redirect those traits into more constructive outlets????
Both your most common doodle's parts (labra and golden) want to hunt and retrieve water birds so the best suggestion I can give y'all is congratulations on your new duck hunting hobby.
#people will overlook the perfect breeds to suit their needs based on just their looks#and get a work dog because it looks cool

Any time someone sees Herschel and says "AWWW I want a Corgi <3" (because he is Very Cute (TM)), I immediately reply: "Do not get a Corgi unless you have a job for it to do. They were bred to bully livestock across the hills of Wales. This is basically a Border Collie that knows he is cute enough to get away with murder. If you get one and it doesn't have a job, it will apply its livestock-bullying instincts to YOU. Herschel's job specifically is to help manage my crippling ADHD, because I don't have a bull for him to micromanage." This gets me odd looks at the home depot but it does get the point across.
