I read that article. The article was thoughtful and good and ends with a plea to donate to transgender causes. Also people can be obsessed about any number of things. Sometimes it’s because they have ADHD or autism, but sometimes they don’t. And consuming pop culture forms both personal and cultural identity? There are people that form large parts of their identity around sports teams, or making movie-perfect stormtrooper armor. This behavior is normal and you can’t just call it pathetic because it’s something you personally don’t like, especially when the person in question understands the nuances of it and its problems. I am a transgender person for who Harry Potter was a big part of my identity and I am here to say that the cis person who wrote this article knows their place and knows where they are in all of this and understands that there are no easy answers to any of this.

Yeah but also don’t make fun of neurotypical people for having interests either. My grandma is as neurotypical as they come and she knows a lot about and is super into the sitcom Hogan’s Heroes. Human beings have interests. Human beings have interests that they incorporate into their personal identities.

Also, let’s recognize that people made it part of their identity as children. I was six years old when I first started reading Harry Potter. It’s bound up in our childhood memories and early identity formation. It’s really unfair for people to fault others for having been children doing things that children do, or for having a continued attachment to the things that their identity formed around.

Okay so to all of those people who say that “bi women should be able to call themselves lesbians because lesbian used to be an umbrella term when the gay rights movement first started!!”… what the fuck are *lesbians* supposed to call ourselves? There are experiences UNIQUE to being a woman/nb who is incapable being attracted to men. You are erasing these when you insist that you, a person attracted to men, should be able to use the ONE word specific to us and to our experiences. You have so many words to describe yourselves: bi woman, sapphic, wlw. Some of these–like sapphic and wlw–are words we can share! But it is fucking wrong to call yourself a lesbian when you are capable of being attracted to men. Why are you so determined to turn this term–which, in the current vernacular, is the only non-slur way to describe our identity–into an “umbrella” term like sapphic? You are directly contributing to the erasure of lesbians with your bizarre desire to claim the one word exclusive to us.
