i had a thought
do you think men have a stronger tendency to aggressively reject veganism/vegetarianism because of their evolutionary drive to provide, in the form of hunting? Like, if the gatherers can support themselves, there would be no logical need for the hunters anymore, ergo natural selection would kick in and naturally select them to go extinct. The evolutionary fear of not being needed and not finding a partner to reproduce and pass on their genes with could be a reason for the strong reaction many men have towards veganism/vegetarianism.
Men react more aggressive to veganism because meat has been (in the US, UK, and Australia at least) associated with masculinity, especially in the current conservative political climate. Choosing to abstain from meat, especially when it's about care for other animals, is often seen as being less masculine, which feels like an existential threat to many men.
Men are not evolved to be hunters. Women are not evolved to be gatherers.
The assumption that men's gendered violence is inherent in biology only serves to strengthen gender roles and their power in our society. Holding men accountable for the ways in which they participate in the patriarchy is the way to weaken its hold.

I've long been musing over the concept of vegan meats that are sold as faux-dragon (purple and spicy) or faux-unicorn (pink and mica-sprinkled), or buffalo "wings" that look like a chicken wing but taste beefy. Sky's the limit!

This website's love of leather is consumerist btw. It's not revolutionary or sustainable. It's a high-status fashion item which is entirely unnecessary (we could replace all leather with existing plant materials yesterday). It's popular on this website because the marketing around it allows people to disguise their consumerism as #sustainable and #vintage and #punk.
In reality, leather tanning poisons the global south with heavy metals. And it's impossible to rear cattle without contributing hugely to climate change. We can't keep pretending it's a byproduct which somehow doesn't count. As if beef died on the cross and absolved all other cow products of their sins. Leather is a huge part of the profitability of the cattle industry. Even pretending a leather bag has a 100 year lifespan, it's not worth the CO2 or heavy metal pollution required to produce it. It would be drastically better to replace 1 leather bag with 20 hemp bags. And, of course, none of this even mentions the abject torture the cow had to go through.
And like, we can be a little consumerist. I'm not making the "you hate capitalism and have an iphone" argument. I don't care if you own leather or buy it second hand. But what is genuinely harmful is falling for the marketing and thinking leather is somehow revolutionary, or even worse, that opposition to leather is reactionary.

"Veganism is anti-Indigenous" is a talking point non-Indigenous people use to avoid accountability, and it's literally the noble savage trope. It assumes we all hunt and fish, erasing Indigenous vegans, plant-based traditions, AND the fact that the meat and dairy industry is actively destroying Indigenous lands, waters, and food systems. Using us as a shield while buying your meat from the grocery store is tokenism. We're not your excuse.

"But what about-" what about them? Are YOU them? Is that YOUR case? If not, then stop using them as an excuse for why you walk past the black beans, tofu, lentils, and other affordable plant-based protein options in your grocery store to get your overpriced ground beef from a corporation that's destroying the Amazon rainforest to mass produce the cows yall can't stop eating.
The current push that animal protein is 1: necessary and 2: optimal is driven by the animal ag lobby as well as a fascist association between meat and masculinity. You're not revolutionary for thinking that we need animal protein, you're thinking what the government wants you to think
people who don't know what words mean: eating a burger associates you with "fascism" 🤡
If you can't make a simple connection between the rise in "carnivore diets" and the new FDA guidelines encouraging meat consumption, the constant association with the left and abstaining from meat, the portrayal of vegetarian choices as unmasculine, the billions of taxpayer dollars that go to the meat industry (which in america, australia, and many other countries is built off land stolen in a genocide for the purpose of animal agriculture), and the current overt rise in fascism in america, I don't know what to tell you.
Meat eating is closely associated with fascism in america. If you had a critical lens to meat eating this would be clear. Eating a burger doesnt make you a fascist, but not comprehending the political implications of meat eating makes you a pawn for fascist rhetoric.
