Star Fox character line up
Inspired by bad guys art style. It is Lupin the Third adjacent enough to always tickle my brain.
Star Fox vs Star Wolf matchups, how and why
Fox McCloud > Wolf O'Donnell
Wolf is an A Tier pilot, his problem is just that he's the Char in an Amuro/Char relationship and he doesn't want to admit it. Fox's primary weakness at the beginning of their rivalry is his lack of seasoning, and Wolf has to lean on that hard to stay in the fight; taunting him about his dad and ambushing him mid-battle when he already has problems to deal with.
Falco Lombardi > Leon Powalski
Falco/Leon is a tricky matchup because Falco is the better pilot on paper, but not so much better than Leon that he makes it a cakewalk. He actually has to fly hard, which is something Falco doesn't have to do a lot. He also has one huge problem: he's a hothead and Leon is a troll. Falco can be working on getting Leon all boxed up when Leon hits him with an open broadcast saying "I think I'll torture you for awhile." and the sheer idea of this lizard talking smack gets Falco seeing red and wait where did he go HOW DID HE GET ON MY TAIL-
Pigma Dengar > Peppy Hare
Peppy my man it is not a good day for you. Peppy is smarter than Pigma in a lot of ways, but as a pilot, he's a great strategist. He's also older than Pigma (I think of Peppy as older than either of his former wingmates) so that's starting to bite him in the ass as time goes on. Pigma beats Peppy like a drum in a one-on-one matchup so Peppy has to play defense, use terrain flying and try to lead Pigma into a teammate's crosshairs because Pigma's grudge against his former wingman can blind him to the wider picture.
Andrew Oikonny > Slippy Toad
In contrast to official Nintendo statements I don't think of either of them as being that bad as pilots - they can fly a Wolfen and Arwing respectively without killing themselves after all, which speaks to some level of skill. The problem is they're both cruiserweights competing alongside superheavyweights. Both of them have technical skills but they're also both nepo babies (the big difference is that Slippy admits it while Andrew refuses to acknowledge fault) but the end result is Andrew's role in a furball is to bully Slippy until Fox or Falco can bail him out, because if he ever flew against anyone else in this kind of fight he'd get shredded.

On Andrew’s Favorite Book:
THE APES OF WRATH!
Andrew’s favorite book is “The Apes of Wrath”, according to the N64 strategy guide. I’ve been amusingly haunted by this for years, so it’s time to say my piece.
My first thought was (1) “Andrew reads…?”. My second thought was (2) “That’s totally hilarious. Andross’s army is full of wrathful apes, after all.” My third thought was (3) “Wait a minute. The source material, the Grapes of Wrath, is a sad and soulful tale of poverty, death, and community under struggle. Could the Apes of Wrath be a similar book!?”
It was obviously just a silly monkey joke by the creators, but what if we took it seriously for juicy fanfic/worldbuilding/lore reasons?
We can muse that if the Apes of Wrath is anything like the source material it’s parodying by John Steinbeck, it concerns the plight of simian migrant workers who travel far from home in hopes of financial stability during Some Great Lylatian Depression. Perhaps it’s written by someone called Yohn Steinbock (a Steinbock goat).
Many of these ape characters would be a part of impoverished families who starve to death in hopes of a promised land that never materializes. Perhaps Corneria’s governance promised these people something that it never actually delivered on? Were they deceived in this story? Ignored? Abandoned? Exploited?
Could the Apes of Wrath actually be a hard-hitting piece of literature that helps us understand what led to the formation of Andross’s army? Then we may begin to comprehend how a despotic force of nature like Andross — who has no qualms about mass bioterrorism and genocide — somehow gained a passionate army of followers.
It was obviously just a silly monkey joke by the creators, but what if we took it seriously for juicy fanfic/worldbuilding/lore reasons?
Yes yes yes yes yes, I'm so glad I stumbled onto this post because we need to talk about this, because this joke has bugged me ever since I first saw it.
Like yes they obviously did it for the pun but the sheer idea that there's a book in Lylat titled 'The Apes of Wrath' is unbelievable worldbuilding especially when you consider speciesism in the game. I mean, the Cornerian army and General Pepper are all dogs - for the "dogs of war" pun I presume because that's how this all goes, but then you have to consider the reverse, and how the bosses you fight in Starfox are all apes (and a handful of alligators for some reason).
For real has the Lylat Wars been a race war this whole time?
Venom in game is depicted as this ugly, polluted, barely livable planet in contras to the Earthlike beauty of Cornera, and Andross gets exiled there as punishment, but also when we go there, there's these old stone temples with ape statues and ancient technology. Is Venom the ape homeworld???? Did they pollute it in their race to the space age or was there some disaster that forced them to abandon it??? And now that Andross with his genius has gathered powerful weapons and formed bastion on this world, do the apes flock to him like a new messiah that will lead them to glorious victory to reclaim Venom and the rest of Lylat????
Is Andrew Oikonny such a diehard Andross stan not just because the man is his uncle, but because he read the tale of his peoples' plight at a tender age and ever since then, he's been really truly ride-or-die for this War of Justice for Apekind?? Does he insist on being a member of Star Wolf because he needs to fight on the frontlines to prove himself?
YES. I feel like the species-ist dialogue in Star Fox is part of the seasoning for this universe. It's practically been a part of the atmosphere and the fandom can have fun dissecting what exactly that means and how it affects the characters' relationships. Hero characters like Fox and Katt have expressed disdain for simians as a whole before, which is an unhinged writing choice for good-aligned characters in retrospect. How about how Fox talks about apes in Assault!? And Andross can't stand those Cornerian dogs! The old games and comics didn't hold back on this sort of thing. They've almost completely done away with these prejudicial quips in SF2026.
Your comment made me think about how it sticks out to me that the CDF upper brass that greet Star Fox during the award ceremony are all dogs. This is a visual contrast to Star Fox, so maybe it's intentional. Corneria's quite culturally homogeneous (especially compared to Papetoon), where dog Lylatians appear as the majority and the ruling class. I like to think that although General Pepper is a well-intentioned and morally-just character to the best of his abilities, he may also be obliviously ignorant to the downsides of this "doggy ethnostate" (lol). After all, it seems that creators like Imamura view Corneria as a good ... but not perfect ... society. Andross is like the extreme status-quo-disruptor, offering his followers an alternative vision, no matter the cost. I tend to work with the headcanon that Andross's most high-ranking followers are fringe ape supremacists.
Giving Venom some actual history in the form of a [forgive me] ... a planet of the apes ... or some other culture would be really neat. The fact that it's apparently an unlivable toxic wasteland is... Hm. Questionable. The ancient history angle as a reptilian homeworld goes as far back as Itoh's SNES comic. I think some lore also spun that it used to be a green utopia and Command played with terraforming it.
It's going to be interesting to see what future games do about Andrew. Hell, it's going to be interesting to see what fans do about Andrew. We know that he gets even more radicalized and GOES APE in Assault. But I think he's a bit of a fan favorite who could be a wildcard as far as how he turns out in this timeline. As for me, I think he's just a young and ignorant guy who hasn't really grown up yet, even if he is a little sophisticated for reading the Apes of Wrath.
Finally! Finished. Took way too long. Yuna's great. FFX is a masterpiece. I wanted to do a fun piece showcasing her and her aeons. I have plans for some more FF stuff!
