I often talk about reality checking and going along with it when helping someone deal with delusions, but I felt as if I didn’t really make it clear to what I meant when I said it.

I grew up with a family member who experienced delusions, specifically to do with gang stalking and there being a set of rumours that followed them wherever they went (the logic went that the rumours were what roped more people into the group). Everyone else in the family tried the no-evidence reality checks, saying it was all in their head, that it wasn’t real, and shutting them down any time they were scared and wanted to talk about it. I… did not. I listened, I offered advice that fit their logic but wasn’t harmful (ie; hearing people say nasty shit through the fence to try and make them feel awful and look crazy when they react = piss them off by ignoring it). The result of this was that eventually whenever they were having a really bad day they’d talk to me about it, and we’d problem solve. Which then eventually led to them pursuing a disability claim because “if they’re trying to make me look crazy and they keep sabotaging me when I get jobs, then fuck it, I’m crazy, give me disability payments!” Which in turn led to an actual diagnosis and medication regime that helped significantly.

Basically, empathy and reassurance without trying to “snap them out if it” led to improved quality of life (and eventual treatment and remission, but that isn’t the point and shouldn’t be the goal unless it’s what the person wants).
