Fun Story: My director kept telling me and my tenor sax buddy to play softer. No matter what we did, it wasnāt soft enough for him. So getting frustrated, I told my buddy āDont play this time. Just fake itāĀ
Our Band Director then informed us we sounded perfect.Ā
To my readers: āpā means quiet, āppā means really quiet. Iāve never seen āppppā before haha.
On the contrast, āfā means loud, and āffffā probably means so loud you go unconscious.
I had ffff in a piece once and my conductor told me to play as loudly as physically possible without falling off my chairā¦
Me and my trombone buddies had āffffā and he sat next to me and played so hard that he fell out of his chair.

Okay yeah so I play the bass clarinet and the amount of air you have to move and the stiffness of the reed means it only has two settings and that is loud and louder, with an optional LOUDEST that includes a 50% probability of HORRIBLE CROAKING NOISE which is the bass equivalent of the ubiquitous clarinet shriek.
One day, when I was in concert band in high school, we got a new piece handed out for the first time, and there was a strange little commotion back in the tuba section ā whispering, and pointing at something in the music, and swatting at each otherās hands all shhh donāt call attention to it. And although they did attract the attention of basically everyone else in the band, they managed to avoid being noticed by the band director, who gave us a few minutes to look over our parts and then said, āAll right, letās run through it up to section A.ā
And here we are, cheerfully playing along, sounding reasonably competent ā but everyone, when they have the attention to spare, is keeping an eye on the tuba players. They donāt come in for the first eight measures or so, and then when theyĀ do come in, what we see is:
[stifled giggling]
[reeeeeeally deep breath]
[COLOSSAL FOGHORN NOISE]
The entire band stops dead, in the cacophonous kind of way that a band stops when it hasnāt actually been cued to stop. The band director doesnāt even say anything, just looks straight back at the tubas and makes a helpless sort of why gesture.
In unison, the tuba players defend themselves: āTHERE WERE FOUR FāS.ā
FFFF is not really a rational dynamic marking for any instrument, but for the love of all that is holy why would you put it in a tuba part.

I would never do this if I didnt need it, but I really need help.
Around 8 months ago, my boyfriend died in a car accident and about two weeks ago, right after one of my momās dogs had to be put to sleep, my boyfriendās dad killed himself. My job put me on leave for what was supposed to be a week, but now its becoming 3 weeks and I cant afford anything anymore. I have $45 to my name and all of that has to go to gas.
At this rate, Iām going to miss my car payment again and my mom cant keep covering it. I recently turned 18 and all of my birthday money has gone to trying to stay afloat, and while typing this, Iām holding back a full blown panic attack because I cant handle the money stress and grieving.
If you can help at all, it would be very appreciated, but if not I fully understand. If you feel comfortable, please share this. I cant lose my car, shes all I have left. Right now, Iām starving to save all the money I can for her.

soā¦ freshman year, at my first high school, we would try to get everyone in the section to meet up at a restaurant after football games to eat and talk together, really just to hang out and chill
now, by the time the 26 of us got there, it would have been somewhere around midnightā¦ bear in mind they close at 1-2 am
now imagine, 5 total people working vs 26 hungry band kidsā¦ it took at least one hour for everything to be made, plus the time to eat, and then they had to split every check amongst people who are paying for themselves, paying for some parts of otherās food, etc.
the checks kept getting messed up, some of the food was wrong, it was chaos but in the funny way
we didnāt leave until 3 am, with a comp the next day
ā¦itās really only funny looking back tbh
being in a small college now, theresās no marching bandā¦ thereās not even a concert band, which is actually pretty sad to me
iāve met a few ex- marching band kids, which is kind of sweet, but as of right now i have no new storiesā¦
iāll try to remember back and tell old stories, and probably snag some memes from my friends in their junior and senior year if iām able, but as of right now there may not be much content because of this
iām sorry, i cut my highschool experience short by a year and the last two wereā¦. less than desirable anyways, by a lot, so really itās my fault, but iāll try to keep going as best as i can
i just got so tired of everything they said about me, but i donāt wanna get too sappy, your regularly-ish scheduled memes will be back someday soon, and iāll try to post a story after this
