i havent fnished reading this paper but the initial skim seems promising, i like it when papers are particularly bitchy about their subject matter
unless that one researcher who said she found the hEDS gene a bit ago can back it up with replication soon i think hEDS is probably going to be (probably correctly? idk im not a college guy) into "hypermobility spectrum disorder" and stay there pretty soon, which IMO is reasonable. it seems like the other EDS subtypes are easily genetically determined/diagnosed, and dont really have much to do with what we currently understand as hEDS, which is entirely symptom-based and primarily seems to be a thing that occurs in comorbidity with the other members of the Big Four (or big three, since fibro is more and more being lumped into me/cfs or used interchangeably in studies that are specifically about the me/cfs/MCAS/POTS/hypermobility constellation, thats a different subject though)
i would be willing to believe that non-genetic joint hypermobility is a downstream effect of basically your cells being exploded via other processes, and that its actually these other processes that are being inherited rather than the hypermobility itself.
as a layman my urge to simplify and recognize trends that the trained professional are ethically forbade from assuming leads me to guess that there is just a large minority of the human population that is of the "floppy, sniffling nerd" phenotype to a greater or lesser degree, and that through various other variables including sex hormones, autism severity, infection history and environment, either do or do not exhibit the sniffles, chronic pain, funny human tricks and stomach problems severely enough to be diagnosed with the imo too-granular criteria and accrue various official labels. just vaguely mashing together the hundred papers ive read on all this stuff id guess Floppy Nerds account for roughly 10-20% of the human population depending on local gene pools. every time i can jacobs ladder into an economy plane seat i am reminded that the phenotype has a lot of extremely obvious evolutionary advantages so it's not surprising that a specialized type of human exists in this niche in significant numbers, and that we continue to reproduce
