Skip Google for Research
As Google has worked to overtake the internet, its search algorithm has not just gotten worse. It has been designed to prioritize advertisers and popular pages often times excluding pages and content that better matches your search termsÂ
As a writer in need of information for my stories, I find this unacceptable. As a proponent of availability of information so the populace can actually educate itself, it is unforgivable.
Below is a concise list of useful research sites compiled by Edward Clark over on Facebook. I was familiar with some, but not all of these.
â
Google is so powerful that it âhidesâ other search systems from us. We just donât know the existence of most of them. Meanwhile, there are still a huge number of excellent searchers in the world who specialize in books, science, other smart information. Keep a list of sites you never heard of.
www.refseek.com - Academic Resource Search. More than a billion sources: encyclopedia, monographies, magazines.
www.worldcat.org - a search for the contents of 20 thousand worldwide libraries. Find out where lies the nearest rare book you need.
https://link.springer.com - access to more than 10 million scientific documents: books, articles, research protocols.
www.bioline.org.br is a library of scientific bioscience journals published in developing countries.
http://repec.org - volunteers from 102 countries have collected almost 4 million publications on economics and related science.
www.science.gov is an American state search engine on 2200+ scientific sites. More than 200 million articles are indexed.
www.pdfdrive.com is the largest website for free download of books in PDF format. Claiming over 225 million names.
www.base-search.net is one of the most powerful researches on academic studies texts. More than 100 million scientific documents, 70% of them are free
this and also; your local libraries
passages that make you whisper "oh my god"
The way memory is the ringing after a gunshot. The way we try to remember the gunshot but canât. The way memory gets up after someone has died and starts walking.

Every day is a miniature house of worship
Civil Service, Claire Schwartz
think this has to be one of my favourite headlines of anything ever
The best thing about that article is that there gets to be a point where youâre like surely. Surely we canât get sexier and less-martyr-y than this. And that point is about a 3rd of the way through the piece.

You need to understand!!! It's my favourite thing in the world! I have Nike tattooed on my arm because of this part in NEC! And brought to life? LIKE THIS? Dying.

â Gothic month on @mynocturnality
âThe hunger for unmitigated and uncomplicated sensation carries on its tongue an unspoken shame. âYou are a little soul carrying around a corpse,â Epicetus once said. The body is a monstrous thing that turns the soul grotesque, and that sentimental craving for a quick fix of feeling, or sudden rush of sweet, feels like the emotional equivalent of that cumbersome luggageâcorporeal and baseâan embarrassing set of desires that our ethereal, higher selves have to lug around.â
â The Empathy Exams by Leslie Jamison (via decreation)

âThe truth gnaws at you. In periodic flashes like that Iâd be painfully aware that I was living badly, just plain living wrong. But I refused to completely acknowledge or act on that awareness, so the feeling just festered inside like a tumor, gradually eating away at my sense of dignity. You know and you donât know. You know and you wonât know, and as long as the outsides of your life remain intactâyour job and your professional personaâitâs very hard to accept that the insides, the pieces of you that have to do with integrity and self-esteem, are slowly rotting away.â
â Drinking: A Love Story, Caroline Knapp

who wouldnât see this and then look deeply into their own emotional playing field to see what improvements could be made purely inspired by the vulnerable earth. this is the face of all literal gods
Thatâs actually called the Overview Effect- something experienced by some astronauts that makes them see that âfrom space, national boundaries vanish, the conflicts that divide people become less important, and the need to create a planetary society with the united will to protect this âpale blue dotâ becomes both obvious and imperativeâ.
And a 2020 study showed how the overview effect turns observers (astronauts) into environmentalists
