I think something that is so important about being an artist is just... being ok with being obsessed with something and coming back to it over and over. When we (non-professional) artists keep coming back to the same tropes I think we get self-conscious about it. It's like we're only allowed to have obsessions if those things bring us money and acclaim, like Georgia O'Keeffe and her doors, or Agatha Christie and her murder, or James Cameron and his deep-sea diving. But if we hobbyists have A Thing? Well, that's weird and embarrassing.
For us in this community, that thing can be whump, but it can also get more specific or broad than that.
Personally, I think during the times where I think I'm struggling to know who I am as an artist, the real problem has actually been that I do know, I'm just refusing to accept it. And that has been for a lot of reasons, like the way I was raised and the relationship I found myself in.
For years I've seen people like Guillermo del Toro talk about his obsession with Frankenstein and gothic horror, or Denis Villeneuve talk about his obsession with isolation and trauma, and I've felt so much jealousy that people like that knew exactly who they were and what they liked and pursued it.
But like. I know those things about myself, too. I know I love writing. I know I'm obsessed with people forming bonds in the worst possible circumstances and surviving together. I know I'm obsessed with the powerful being exposed for their hypocrisy and being overthrown. I know I'm obsessed with people finding familial ties in families they weren't born into. And, I've been obsessed with zombies since I was a kid.
I barely wrote at all during the years of 2022 and 2023, and I've already written about why. Now that I'm divorced and safe, I'm writing more than I have since 2020. Pretty much my entire life revolves around writing. I run two writing groups, one in person in my town and one online with friends across three states. I take writing classes at my local library. I finished the first draft of Pale Horse Planet this month, which is the first book I've ever seriously considered querying.
And I think it's because I've started to give myself permission to be who I am. To be obsessed. To prioritize my writing (read: my happiness) as much as someone who does it for a living. Anyone who enters my life from now on is going to have to understand that, too; gone are the days when I would tolerate someone who might take pleasure in dismissing, mocking, or sabotaging this thing that brings me so much joy.
If I have one wish for all of us, it's that: acceptance of who we are, what we like, and permission to return again and again to those things that whisper to us. Like, Georgia O'Keeffe painted doors. Let us share what we love.

Well since we are all, as of 4/28/26, having an *absolutely normal* time and aren't freaking out about any new chapter and dramatic reveal at all...
I just wanna take a moment to shout out an interaction I like a lot. A scene I sure am very normal about.
I just wanna talk about it *a Lil bit*, not full deep dive mode. Ya know?
Because Amo and Enjin don't start off great for very clear and understandable reasons (Amo did attack them and make a lot of them relive some traumatic memories, and Enjin immediately had to comment on her clothes/body and she didn't appreciate the insincerity in trying to appeal to her.)
Our mans, he's valid for liking hot chicks (me too) but my guy is bad at handling the feelings of others. Honestly fair. He knows his lane and he does his best when he stays in it.
BUT what I like about this, is that it does show more of what that lane is. And I think it is a great set up and motivation for Amo.
He's not going to coddle her or try to make her feel better to get back in the game (not his style, or hers actually). He's honest with the moment, makes it a teaching one. It isn't "you're useless sit there and cry". Its "OK. Sit there and cry, thats fine. But hey, don't like that then get back up." There's that path forward.
Her whole thing right now is wanting to experience more life/emotions so she can cultivate her own and powers. And here are two *huge* emotions that are important to understand right now she can learn from.
Maybe I'll come back to this later to add on, or make another longer post to connect into (because maybe eventually we will make big Amo post)... but... Just two cents for now, ya know?
he has so many layers T_T
especially because what comes right before it is Enjin trying to prioritize RUDO's wants and needs, or what he thinks Rudo's wants and needs are. He's like, "I know we have no reason to care about this SA orphan who tried to kill us, but on the other hand, we should look into her whereabouts since they align with our current goals."
And then it's RUDO who is like, hey my guy, let's rethink that a little.
and the close-up on Enjin's eyes really shows that this is a teaching-learning moment for BOTH of them. Enjin is learning a lot about Rudo's true inner character, and Rudo is standing up for someone else, someone who was cruel to him and his friends (which is not something Rudo the Sphereite would ever have done).
And for Enjin to not snap at him and be like, "Hello, we almost died, she's not worth this level of compassion from you," but to instead pat his head and be like, "Yep, this is definitely the son of the man who set me on my life's path" (in his head) but also apologize to Rudo for probably the first time, is so sweet and shows a lot about his inner character too, and the trust and understanding that's developing in their relationship.
And then he's immdiately like, "You can care about her, and i'll even help you care about her, but don't get the wrong idea, I don't care about her" when his whole entire purpose in life for the last 15 years is basically to rescue sex-abused orphans is just an incredible piece of writing imo.
Enjin puts a lot of work into slapping together a tough-guy facade of callousness and uncaringness and shit happens, get over it, but it's such a damn coping mechanism ruse and i love that about him.
I redrew all the kakashis in kakashi gaiden and colored some of them!! here are my faves
they call him double oh three and a half
Personally? I would never deny Hiromu Arakawa her right to a short bratty braided blond character in a kickass red coat
Invent a look this iconic and I think you should get to use it in every series.
It was actually her assistants conspiring lmao
The funniest part to me is the way that she doesn't even believe her assistants are responsible for this. She 100% blames Edward "fictional character who can't directly affect the real world unless made to do so" Elric.

I've been wondering for ages why Urana gave us Enjin's full tattoo design in a sketch but never Enjin topless.
So yeah, what if he's been using his watch countless of times and his body is littered in scars because of it?

Reader Questionnaire*:・゚✧
Hey! I've been reading for pleasure my whole life (when I was a kid I was convinced everyone read fiction books before bed because it was what we did at home 😄). Lately, I've been preoccupied with ubiquitous news reports on how reading comprehension skills persistently deteriorate, especially among the younger generations. So it got me wondering how people who do read for pleasure manage to keep the habit of reading alive "in this economy" 👀
Do you mostly read fiction or non-fiction?
Is reading for pleasure part of your daily routine? If so, how much time a day do you spend on reading?
Do you often binge books?
Describe your average reading session 😁(Do you have a special spot where you get comfortable/is it a hard copy or an e-book/is it day or night etc.)
Do you have a schedule or do you read when you feel like reading?
Have you ever struggled with reading (e.g. issues with concentration/retaining information, learning disabilities etc.) and how did you manage to overcome it?
Can you read multiple books at once?
If you're multilingual, do you intentionally choose to regularly read books in your target language(s) to maintain language proficiency? Is it a habit too, or is it a matter of the book's original language?
How do you usually choose books for your to-read list?
Do you keep track of the books you've read/plan to read?
Do you consider reading manga/comics "reading"?
Do you often find yourself in a reading slump? How long did your ultimate slump take?
If you're an avid reader, please, share your thoughts :3 Reading seems like such a basic thing, but i'm sure everyone goes about it in their own way.
i read fast and furious and pretty much constantly and always have, although it tends to be the case ever since i started writing that i'm reading my own work more often than not. a life without reading is sad and unfinished, in my opinion.
Do you mostly read fiction or non-fiction?
mix of both. i do audiobooks of non-fiction when i'm driving places, but i've never enjoyed fiction audiobooks. doesn't feel immersive enough.
Is reading for pleasure part of your daily routine? If so, how much time a day do you spend on reading?
oof, that varies! if i'm writing, i'm often pausing to read back what i just wrote. and i often spend the day or so after posting a fic chapter to just read it like 343 times in a row. i don't really set aside time to read, it just happens. like breathing really.
Do you often binge books?
Describe your average reading session 😁(Do you have a special spot where you get comfortable/is it a hard copy or an e-book/is it day or night etc.)
mostly on my laptop if its fanfiction, and mostly curled up in bed. but if it's a physical book, i like to take it outside or to a cafe. especially i like reading non-fiction books at cafes and writing in the margins and underlining bits i find interesting.
Do you have a schedule or do you read when you feel like reading?
the latter.
Have you ever struggled with reading (e.g. issues with concentration/retaining information, learning disabilities etc.) and how did you manage to overcome it?
thankfully no. i consider myself to be a top-tier reader. i love grammar and spelling and diagramming sentences and linguistics and etymology and all things word-related. i like to know the rules by heart so i don't feel bad when i chuck them out the window.
Can you read multiple books at once?
Oh yes. Right now i've got deTocqueville's Democracy in America, selections from Hayek, and a music primer from 1916 sitting out on the table all waiting for my attention. i also listened to a half or so of an audiobook called Deploy Empathy last night while cross-stitching, and just listened to The Highly Sensitive Person a week or two ago. Most of it.
I go along with audiobooks until I get the gist, unless it's one i really like. Definitely not afraid to quit in the middle. When I was younger, i used to try to finish every single word and be thorough, always, but nowadays, i usually go for much smaller increments of books, like half-chapters or 5-6 paragraphs, especially if it's something dense. quality over quantity.
If you're multilingual, do you intentionally choose to regularly read books in your target language(s) to maintain language proficiency? Is it a habit too, or is it a matter of the book's original language?
i like reading manga in japanese. i'm not quite good enough at it to be able to read without a dictionary handy, but i'm trying to improve.
i can read spanish as well. sometimes i read spanish-language fics on ao3.
How do you usually choose books for your to-read list?
oof. good question. i am both a generalist and a stay-in-my-lane specialist. i love a good library or used book store. Got the Hayek volume from a little free library in the neighborhood, and got the music primer from the thrift store. i bought the deTocqueville one at full price, which is unusual for me, but i read his book about his journey thru Ireland years ago and still think about it on a near-daily basis. figured it was time to bite the bullet and read this gigantic tome about my home country. so far it's... mm, more mythological than i was expecting.
anyway, i suppose my main method of choosing books is to read authors i already know i enjoy, and for nonfiction, i often read books from the bibliography or work cited of a book i enjoyed or found educational.
Do you keep track of the books you've read/plan to read?
nah not really. i used to, but it usually ended up being a long list of books i would "get to later," and i find that having a list of undone things is a bit of a downer for me.
Do you consider reading manga/comics "reading"?
yeah. certainly.
actually i think there's a lot to be said for reading fiction and creating all the details and lighting and ambience and mise en scene in your own mind, and doing mental casting and voice acting and setting the scene based on the author's written instructions. i really enjoy that process, myself.
but having someone else do all that FOR you, with beautiful artwork and static cinematography, is lovely too.
Do you often find yourself in a reading slump? How long did your ultimate slump take?
never had this experience. never will, fingers crossed and god willing. i switch stories and books and topics a lot, a lot a lot, but i've never not had something.
