Time for making new plans, recovering old ones, discovering oneself with newfound energy and good intentions for the future…for many people that time is New Years, for me it’s fall.
Something about this season makes me perceive it as a new beginning. As such, new starts require a lot of reflection and careful considerations, and careful considerations require a peaceful state of mind. This must be why my memory unconsciously brought me back to fall 2013, right after I graduated from my Master’s degree, when I harvested for a winery in the province of Piacenza.
The repeated times I did hand work or worked on a farm, sweat on my forehead and dirt under my nails, for some reason are the times I felt more at ease, calm and centered.
The few weeks ahead where exhausting physically, but regenerating mentally. I would wake up around 5:15, get in a car to drive to the hills in the countryside and be at the winery by 6:30. There, the manager would gather us and drive us to the plot of vineyard we had to pick grapes that day.
In wine-making, man follows nature’s rhythm. And to follow nature’s rhythm, means collecting grapes at the exact right time of ripening - when acids, sugars and polifenols are rightly balanced - to get the result you’re hoping for in the cellar.
The first day of harvest we worked over 10 hours under the sun to make sure that all grapes from the same vineyard where gathered in time. Harvest often isn’t as romantic as one’s mind pictures. It involves standing or kneeling for long hours (depending on the vine training system used on the vine you’re picking grapes from), bending your back or lifting your arms above your head for long hours, standing humidity and thermal excursion, having your hands constantly sticky from grape juice and all sorts of insects hovering around you, as well as waking up at impossible hours (as I already mentioned). Most of all, farming requires endless passion and courage.
Yet, the sight of the sunrise on the vines, the chatter, the smiles and the singing to mark the pace of work, the peaceful feeling from repeating gestures, the sounds of nature and the immense satisfaction of drinking “your wine” years later…were worth the experience.
So, this first day of October years later, I cheers to that. To a new “fall” in my life, to future projects and to all unknown brave farmers out there!
