Sam Francis (1923-1994) was an American painter and one of the leading figures of post-war Abstract Expressionism. After a serious spinal injury left him bedridden, he began painting as part of his recovery - a practice that would define the rest of his life.

Known for his luminous colours, flowing splashes of paint, and expansive white spaces, Francis believed that emptiness was just as important as the paint itself.

The Guggenheim Museum in New York was among the Manhattan buildings where Legionella bacteria, which causes Legionnaires’ disease, was found amid a new outbreak in the city.
