My Thoughts: I love a canon-divergent fic where Mulder and Scully still meet even though they aren't on the X-Files together (they're soul mates so of course they will find each other in any universe) and this one is excellent. I like that the author used her own experience in martial arts to write this fic, especially becaues it is an area where my knowledge is limited! But it makes perfect sense why Scully would seek out a gym to improve her self-defense skills. This story is a good mix of fluff and angst (wonderfully brought on by our favorite character to hate, Diana Fowley), and the ending is worth the wait.

sorry for xfiles posting on main again, but it's just endlessly amusing to me how chris carter, the most christian man alive except for maybe the pope, cast two of the world's horniest individuals on his show, and told them "your characters are never allowed to fuck under any circumstances. ever." so in response to that they were like. hmm but what if this scene where they check each other for alien worms will be soo sexually charged. and and what if. they make this real intense eye contact over a corpse. also can we maybe film a makeout session just for kicks

Chris Carter now claims, in 2026, that when IWTB was first filmed, he wanted less romance-- that it was the producers at Fox who wanted more MSR.

Q: So what were the producers expecting?
CC: I really felt that they didn’t know the show. They knew it was a popular show. They knew that we had done well with the first movie. So they said to us, “Do something for a third of the price, and make us a good, scary PG-13 movie.” We thought we had done that. Then they wanted to lay heavily into the Mulder and Scully romance, and that’s because they didn’t know [that in] the show we would parcel that
out. [...]
Q: There’s not much romance in the director’s cut. Why is that?
CC: We made the reboot Seasons, 10 and 11, between 2008 and now, and I thought people had gotten their fill of the Mulder-Scully romance, so cutting that back felt natural. It felt like it put the weight on the proper things in the storytelling. [...]
Q: Were you ever happy with the 2008 cut?
CC: I always felt that they forced me to shoehorn that Mulder-Scully relationship in there and that it took away from the scares. When we did the X-Files series, the relationship is something we always touched on in passing; it was part of the storytelling, but it wasn’t the object of the storytelling. I was always unhappy with the way that I was forced to do that.
Yet back in 2008, he willingly marketed romance to the audience and took credit for it.

Men’s Journal (Aug. 12, 2026): And now you have your Director’s Cut [of I Want to Believe] out this week. I watched both versions of the movie to prepare to speak with you, and it seems that, with this release, you’ve made the movie a bit more accessible to non–X-Files fans. The Director’s Cut removes callbacks to Samantha, William, and even the two kisses between Scully and Mulder. Can you talk a bit about your decision to pull those bits out of the film, specifically?
Chris Carter: I always felt the movie was, the weight in the stories was kind of wrong. I set out to tell a really scary X-Files story, and when I had to cut it back for reasons beyond my control- for the executives who wanted a PG-13 movie and the MPAA made us cut it back even farther. It became a Mulder-Scully relationship story that happened to have a scary element in it. Also, what I couldn’t have foreseen is that there would be two X-Files reboots, Seasons 10 and 11, so people got their fill of Mulder and Scully. I felt, going back to this movie, I wanted to take some of that out because we had gotten a fill just recently, and I wanted to make it the scary standalone story that I intended to make.
Men’s Journal: Any message to fans upset you’ve robbed them of some MSR, Mulder-Scully Romance, moments?
Chris Carter: Frank Spotnitz told me people are gonna miss that last kiss. But are they?
I'm all for people loving his vision and not wanting to be drawn into sides or wars (genuinely!); and I don't really want to rag on Carter...
but this logic bugs me.
Let's, for argument's sake, assume CC's premise is true: it still wouldn't make sense to go backward in time and remove key parts of the characters' stories (their son, their relationship) which directly impact future story lines.
Another thought: a director's cut usually includes more material, not less, in the final product. What sense does it make to remove the core message of the movie-- don't give up, move on from your mistakes-- if neither Mulder nor Scully are working through past traumas (Samantha) or mistakes (William)?
And maybe it's just me, but MSIV aired back in 2018. Does that seem "recent" enough to warrant redacting MSR romance?
These are just three points, but they underpin IWTB's entire theme.
Lastly, and without getting too finger pointy, it makes one wonder why he deleted the romantic moments. (Removing Samantha creates some issues for Mulder's arc, but she was a bit shoehorned in, anyway.) Especially because Frank Spotnitz, who co-wrote the original script with CC, cautioned him against doing so.
It makes one suspicious that... perhaps the tender MSR scenes
(Fight the Future's hallway, Triangle's kiss, Shiban's and Spotnitz's Millennium kiss, Manners' and DD's Existence kiss, etc.) were allowed-- even enjoyed transiently by Carter-- but only to serve the moment before he reset it again.
I suppose my biggest question is... why? Why create something which requires investment from other people (in this case millions) to continue, then fight simultaneously against that very investment and the counsel of the people who worked alongside you all those years?
Don't get me wrong: I know fans early on had their moments. I've read them; they weren't pretty. The writers read them early on, too. But the show and the fans have grown and changed. Spotnitz and 1013 and the actors openly talk about the show's flaws.
And yet.
The X-Files is Carter's show: he can do what he wants with it.
But CC continually reminding everyone that it's his show is alienating, not only to questioning fans but also to his personal circle (i.e. Duchovny in 1999, Anderson after the Revival.) It's hard, now, to see past (loosely quoted) "maybe I gave [fans] too much."
Scully was in the kitchen, putting away dishes from dinner, and talking to her mother on the phone.
"Don't forget about brunch this Sunday," Maggie reminded her.
Scully winced. She had definitely forgotten about the plans they made a few weeks ago. Luckily, there was no out-of-town case she was working on, so she wouldn't have to cancel. Scully always felt guilty cancelling plans, especially with her mom.
"And bring Fox with you," Maggie requested.
Scully sighed, "Mom, I don't know if he'd want to come." She wouldn't mind spending time with him outside of work, but Mulder was not the type to sit at Sunday brunch when he could be chasing cryptids in the woods.
"Dana, tell him I insist. He'll come."
She rolled her eyes at her mom's confidence. "Okay, Mother."
Scully hung up with Maggie and immediately phoned Mulder. "My mother requests your presence at brunch this Sunday," she said without introduction.
"Oh, she does?" Mulder answered. "What about Miss Dana Scully? Does she request my presence as well?"
"I suppose I'll tolerate your presence," Scully said exaggeratedly, with a smile that Mulder wasn't able to see.
"Okay, I'll leave my dance card with the butler and hope that you fill one of the boxes. What time should I pick you up?"
"10:30 please, since brunch is at 11."
"It's a date," Mulder confirmed, and ended the call before Scully could argue.

For brunch, Maggie made a spinach and mushroom quiche and had fresh fruit, juice, and coffee laid out on the table. It was quite the spread for three people, but Scully appreciated the effort her mom had put in. Mulder seemed to appreciate it, too, as he complimented Maggie many times throughout the meal. Scully remembered Mulder’s upbringing on Martha’s Vineyard and how that most likely contributed to his good manners (when he wanted to display them, that is).
After brunch, Maggie shooed Mulder and Scully into the living room so she could clean up but quickly returned with old photo albums that she clearly wanted to show Mulder.
"Mom, we don't need to look at these," Scully protested. She didn’t need Mulder to see her frizzy hair and terrible fashion sense in her younger years.
"Fox, doesn't mind, do you?" Maggie asked Mulder directly.
"Not at all! In fact, I insist you find me a picture of Dana with braces,” he implored.
Scully groaned – she was outnumbered.
She suffered through baby pictures, school portraits, and graduation photos, until Maggie stopped on a picture of Scully and Melissa, at a wedding about ten years earlier.
Maggie put her hand on the photo and got misty eyed. "I have the two most beautiful daughters in the world."
Scully rolled her eyes. "Every mother says that."
"Well, it's true!” Maggie insisted. “Fox, don't you agree?"
Scully swung her head to Mulder. She wanted to tell him that he did not have to answer, but he spoke too quickly. "I think Dana is the most beautiful woman in the world,” he said confidently.
"Mulder!" Scully exclaimed, covering her face in embarrassment. What would possess him to say something like that?
Maggie smiled smugly. "See, Dana. I'm right!”
"Can we please stop talking about my appearance?" Scully asked, feeling her face redden even more. Luckily, Mulder and Maggie acquiesced, and they moved on to the rest of the album.

When Mulder and Scully departed, heading towards the car, Scully felt she had to comment on Mulder's proclamation from earlier once they were in the car. "You don't have to humor her, you know. She already likes you."
That latter statement was quite evident, as Maggie had given Mulder leftovers and a hug on their way out.
"Humor her?" Mulder questioned.
"You know, when she was talking about having the most beautiful daughters? I hope you didn’t feel like you were put on the spot."
"Scully, I wasn't humoring her because I was telling the truth.”
"Mulder, you cannot possibly think I'm the most beautiful woman in the world. While very flattering, it's a ridiculous statement."
"I don't think so."
"Really? Well, what about Marilyn Monroe?"
"She doesn't do it for me."
"Naomi Campbell?"
"She's pretty, but..." he shrugged and opened the passenger door for Scully to get in.
"Pamela Anderson?"
"Scully, you could list every woman featured in People magazine and it’s not going to change what I think. Why can't you take a compliment?"
Scully paused to buckle her seatbelt, not sure how she wanted to respond. She decided to be honest. "Well, no one's ever said anything like that to me before," she admitted quietly.
"I guess I need to say it more often," Mulder said with a wink, then pulled the car away from the curb.
They were quiet for most of the drive, mostly because Scully was ruminating on Mulder's comment. Could he really believe she was that beautiful? It was really sweet if he did. Mulder had this peculiar habit of driving her absolutely crazy, and then being so kind and gentle the next moment.
When Mulder pulled up to Scully's apartment, he put the car in park and unlocked the doors so she could exit.
Scully leaned over to kiss him on the cheek. "Thanks, Mulder." She quickly unbuckled her seatbelt and got out of the car before he could comment on her out-of-character behavior.
Mulder rolled the window down. "Thanks for the ride?" he asked.
Scully rolled her eyes. "Thanks for being so nice to me. And for the compliment..." she trailed off, still slightly embarrassed by Mulder's earlier pronouncement.
"You're not so bad looking yourself," she said, almost unwillingly. Scully tried to keep her feelings about Mulder (appearance and otherwise) buried deep, but since he made the first move, she thought it would be okay to let him know that the sentiment was reciprocated.
Mulder grinned through the open window. "Most handsome man in the world?"

It's so true, though. Fandom needs people who create things, sure, but there are SOOOOOO many ways to do that. And fandom also needs people who participate in other ways, like commenting and making rec posts and reblogging stuff with interesting tags and just generally reading things and looking at things and sharing them around with other people to say, "Hey, wow, how cool is all of this?" Fandom isn't for capitalism and it never was. I know everything is monetized today - people charging for their Patreons before they'll finish a story, companies making merch that sells out in two seconds because people buy it to resell, concert tickets for stars who can't sing, all of that - but fandom is SUPPOSED to be a gift economy community, where we share and share alike. You don't need merch to be in fandom. You don't need to show up at this potluck and bring something. You just need to say, "I really liked this, thanks!" about the things you put on your plate. It's not about consumption. It's not about production. It's about joy and sharing and playing together in this big sandbox.
And AI is like shit in that sandbox. Nobody wants a turd.
