I’m a bit torn on sharing this because, on the one hand, it’s important to get Julia Serano’s work into more people’s hands, but on the other, she is very much not wealthy and relies on income from her work to survive. On the third hand, I don’t think a post pointing people to her current work on its own will travel as far as this one. C'mere. Listen. There are people out there whose sheer inability to write would dazzle you - lots of them - whose writing is so bad partly because they are so stunningly confident in their own ability that they have never even for a second questioned whether it's possible for them to improve.
These writers are indescribably better equipped to succeed - success, here, being gaining a readership and possibly an income - than writers who spend any amount of of time thinking critically about their skills and improving at their craft, simply because they're prepared at all times to promote their astonishingly bad writing.
This is the actual yard stick you're being measured against in the real world, not whatever standard you're holding yourself to in your head. You can't writhe around in fear of people judging you while the world lavishes that guy with attention and money.

Ever since starting to publish romance novels I’ve been checking out the romance books at the thrift store specifically for the clinch covers, as a reference for what I might want to do with my own books.
As a culture we mocked these to extinction but I think we were just afraid of their power. The modern clinch revival still hasn't reached the heady heights of what they were doing in the 80s! The vintage covers can be really quite explicit. These ones in particular were steamy enough they had to be hidden on an inner flap.
This episode of the Smart Bitches Trashy Books podcast where they interview Shirley Green and Sharon Spiak, who were romance novel cover artists in the 80s, is a fascinating look at what a huge industry these covers were. Did you know they had whole photography studios full of props to make these? They’d take photos and turn those over to a painter who’d make something like a couple of these a day. They had it down to a science.
I do feel like I should share the fruits of @beastliness and my study into clinch covers on this post. Beastly's painting would never have turned out so well without having first learned from the masters.

sorcerer: What are your muse's natural talents? Have they taken the time to hone those skills? Do they like to show off, or are they quiet about their abilities?
warlock: Has your muse ever made a deal to get something they wanted? Is there anything your muse wants enough to broker for it? What would your muse sacrifice to get what they want?
wizard: What is your muse like as a student? Do they have the patience for studying? What do they like learning about? What do they most want to know?
