whenever I tell a story I feel like Uncle Colm from Derry Girls
top 3 hobbies for young adults:
1. borrowing misery from future
2. carrying grief of the past
3. agonizing over the present
Im listening to a podcast ep about AI usage and the guest is saying he completely understands why people refuse to use it out of fear because he shares the same fears, and it's just so weird to me that it's never ever acknowledged that some people don't use it not because they're afraid but because it just holds no appeal. There are things I'm sure learning models are very useful for but none of them have anything to do with me. Yes I'm a bit of a ludite but I completely failed to resist the lure of the phone, or social media, I've never used chatgpt because I have just never wanted to. I feel like the entire debate is instantly reframed once you acknowledge that it's not a necessary service that people either work to resist or avoid out of fear. For most people it's just an online tool, and for me and I know for lots of others too it's just not that important.
It's not that interesting or useful to me, it's holds no appeal, I am resisting nothing. I could already do everything I wanted I don't need a new tool. It really is that simple and I would feel this way even if it wasn't worrying and evil in various ways. We HAVE to resist this narrative that AI is everywhere because people want it, because it's necessary, because it's an improvement, because people can't live without it. AI is everywhere because tech CEOs and investors want to make something from their massive investments. It is incredibly resistable to me. Just don't have an interest in it. This needs to be part of the AI conversation if we have any hope of saving ourselves from the data mining clutches of big tech (AI specifics aside)
I just googled this andβ¦ yes, itβs absolutely real.
And there are so many articles and videos and discussions. Like, the scientific community is buzzing about this.
So much research will have to be redone because the data was absolutely compromised, off by orders of magnitude, by using standard lab gloves.
The world is probably not horrifically contaminated by microplastics. Sterile laboratories, however, are contaminated by latex and nitrile gloves.
Thank God someone bothered to check.
>I just googled this andβ¦ yes, itβs absolutely real.
Sources beyond dude just trust me, for the skeptics.
Scientists may have been unknowingly inflating microplastics pollution estimates, and the surprising source could be their own lab gloves. A

Nitrile and latex gloves may cause overestimation of microplastics - Phys.org (itβs a pdf)

Ordinary Lab Gloves May Have Skewed Microplastic Data: That doesnβt mean microplastics arenβt a problem, though
That should be enough
how did they not fucking account for this. sorry but this is really really stupid
this is so funny.
@3liza they didnβt account for it because they didnβt realize it was an issue. The particles the gloves are shedding are not microplastics but they are similar enough in composition and under an electron microscope that because the scientists didnβt know to account for them, they didnβt realize thatβs what they were seeing.
Also they DID account for contamination in WET sample preparation, because theyβd already learned previously that the nitrile gloves could contaminate wet samples, but this was the first discovery that they were contaminating DRY or AIRBORNE samples as well.
All of this was very clearly laid out in just the last provided link - i didnβt even have to read all of them to learn this, I read like 3 paragraphs of the nautil.us article and I was able to learn what happened and why it hadnβt been accounted for.
Like, I understand the frustration, but this is the sort of thing that has to be DISCOVERED before it can be accounted for, and this is what that kind of discovery looks like, and berating scientists for not already knowing something science hadnβt yet learned is kind of a pointless and bad faith approach to things.
Weβve learned that a lot of the studies done on microplastics in our environment were not actually accurate, and had unintentionally incorrectly inflated numbers of microplastics in their samples due to this issue, which means that while microplastics are still obviously a problem, theyβre not as overwhelming large of a problem than we thought! This is a good thing! Science has done its job and we have learned new things and can now do even better science! Thereβs no reason to be angry at or berate the scientists whoβve gone before. We know better now. Thatβs the important part.

14 years ago today Jesus released 'The Bible'
I really appreciate how every week I reblog this, a different person interacts it. Tuesday light me up speaks to all of us at different times.
That time of week again
"this too shall pass" sure but have you considered the fact that i don't like the way it's passing
If "this too" could stop passing like a kidney stone that would be great thanks
have decided this week is a bust yes itβs only 1 am on monday but wrap it up folks. itβs a bust.

war crimes were still bad when the president had more decorum on tv
of course if you excuse and normalize this murder in US foreign policy, it will be no different when a complete maniac is in power
I remember when people were ignoring that Obama was bombing Libya. They even cheer for it. A polite president would just make you people sleep on multiple genocides and wars.
The fact of the matter is that I do not want to do it
"do what?" you might wonder. well. [gestures broadly]
what if it all worked out in my favour
Be careful not to buy a Chinese toaster! It may be SPYING ON YOUR TOASTING HABITS and sharing your valuable tada (toast data) with the Chinese government!!!

a surprising number of people see the term "social construct" and think that it means something is not real when it actually means something is so very real because it was created by us and is constantly enforced, often violently
