Jinns are the second type of creatures that God had created alongside humans.

Jinns, like humans, possess free will and can, thus, have the ability to sin. What makes them different from humans is that they’re creatures who have a different society and a different world from ours and categorized into a hierarchy of different jinns. They should not be likened to demons, but parallels could be made to them. Unlike humans who were made out of clay, djinns were created through smokeless fire.

Satan/Shaytan/Iblis was a Jinn - not an angel as held in Christian traditions, mind you - who was put in a greater position along with Adam (a.s) over the angels, as the greatest of creatures God had created. Iblis being the first Jinn, and Adam (a.s) being the first Human, Iblis was the first Jinn to fall from God’s grace as a result of his disobedience and Adam the first human to fall from grace as a result of eating the forbidden fruit, though the latter was forgiven later on, while Iblis held to his hubris. (Worth noticing is that the idea of Original Sin and the idea of Soteriology is rejected in Islam as a consequence of Adam’s repentance). 

Jinns have the ability to persuade, possess and manipulate humans. Some jinns like Ifrits are able to inhabit animals of our world, this was demonstrated when Lord Solomon (a.s) talked to ants who were possessed by Jinns. Jinns can have an influence on the environment and possess great speed and strength, which was demonstrated when an Ifrit and its army of Jinns would bring the throne of Sheba to Lord Solomon (a.s). Like humans, they’re capable of evil, and can even influence man to great harm, these are called Whispers and Devils, but like humans, they also possess the ability to do good.
