Must admit that one thing that changed the way I see fandom discourse is realizing that a lot of fandom is just⌠playing with dolls. We're playing with dolls. Shipping? Playing with dolls. AUs? Dolls. Darkfic? Dolls.
Lotta people very agitated about the other kids playing with dolls wrong.
really good analogy because yknow what sometimes it CAN feel bad to see other kids playing dolls "wrong!" maybe you see them damaging or "hurting" their dolls and you hyper empathize, or you see them making modifications and you don't like them! and it makes you feel bad to see it!
fortunately, though, you don't have to watch! nobody is making you watch! and nobody's gonna take YOUR dolls from you. nobody can hurt your dolls, either! these dolls are an infinitely renewable resource. you can have your own iterations, that stay happy and healthy, forever! (and moreover, the dolls don't have real feelings, and cannot suffer!)
some types of stories about my favorite characters make me feel bad. so i don't read them! just like i don't watch youtube videos of people smashing toys

I was impressed with how NOT tropey they managed to make MJâs relationship with Peter after having forgotten him. We donât dwell on any sort of disbelief where sheâs convicted it canât possibly be true. She knows itâs true, and thatâs part of why it hurts her and confuses her. We also donât have any type of âshe doesnât care about him anymoreâ sentiment meant to punch us in the gut. Yes itâs very sad for Peter that she doesnât love him, but ofc she doesnât since you canât love someone you canât rememberâbut she does care about him. Because you donât actually have to know someone intimately to care about them, so even though MJ has none of the memories of her intimate relationship with Peter, she still has intelligent and curious conversations with him, then finds out their history and feels for him and is honest with him and sees his bravery and deservingness and invites him to come meet Ned because she knows that will mean a lot to him. Because MJ is a caring person, not just to her best friend and boyfriend, and so as painful as it is that she doesnât remember Peter being the love of her life, it was so much more bearable than it could have been, because they didnât murder her character to contribute to Sad. Thereâs a reason MJ made Peter so happy to begin with, and sheâs still that same MJ, memories or not. She still has all the same qualities that made her fall in love with him and him fall in love with her, even if she doesnât have the memories and feel that same love. And I kind of love that actually.
People complaining about Peters tech being too high tech in brand new day like the movie aint set in 2028 in a world that had a man in a flying metal suit in 2008, artificial intelligence in 2015, and drones that could create life like illusions in 2024 that stuff is probably low quality tech in their world, not to mention Peter's a genius who was literally introduced as a dumpster diver in his first appearance

I don't want to see anyone used Adrien's moment to defend or validate Marinette when Adrien causes his third 4? apocalypse and end of the world .don't care if you consider Mari a victim, a villain, or both.
At that moment we should all be in this mode:
good for you Adrien! That's it, baby do it! Make it worse! Destroy everything! Good kick! What a great outfit you have! You look amazing in it!
A thing that strikes me about Brand New Day is that it's caused me to do a total reappraisal of Tom Holland as Spider-Man. Like, I honestly disliked him in the role for so long, but BND has shown that it was never Holland's fault; it was the writing and direction for Peter in previous MCU films as a pure and wholesome #relatable soyboy perpetually stuck in high school that Marvel's notorious spider-editorial has been trying to lock Spidey as ever since One More Day.
With BND, the new creative team used the ending of the Watts trilogy as an excuse to revamp MCU Spider-Man into his actual personality in the comics (prior to OMD ruining them), and in doing so they gave Holland the space to show off his acting talents and how good he really was as a pick. Because he captures it all perfectly. The grouchy (sometimes almost sadistic) sarcasm, the self-centeredness and self-pitying and self-loathing, the isolating of himself and requirement of others to break through his barriers, the heart of gold constantly shining through despite himself, the bitterness and wrath and temper, the way he's pathetic and cool in equal measure, the empathy beneath his ego and aversion to difficult emotions, the willpower, the tendency towards awkwardness, etc.. It's all there.
Only a few other actors have really captured that complex, horribly flawed yet always entertaining and ultimately sympathetic personality. Even some genuinely great Spidey media in recent years have fallen into the trap of using the Post-OMD persona (the PS4 games and Friendly Neighborhood), but with BND, Holland embraced lovable loser shithead Peter from the comics and acted the shit out of it. And even more impressively, did so while making it feel like a natural evolution from the Home Trilogy and that "cute sad boy" portrayal he was given to work with previously, despite how radically different the personalities are. I'm really happy about it.
It probably helps that Holland is no longer having to pretend like he's a high schooler and can thus play Spider-Man as the adult he's supposed to be. Which just further reflects the whole arrested development of Spider-Man's comic editorial, how it hurts the character, and how much Spidey media is improved by removing that and letting him grow and change and be a real human being like he used to.
i think ppl would be a lot happier and better-adjusted on here if they realized that being online on a website is like being in any other casual public space full of people. if u walk into walmart u dont immediately think to yourself âi have to be friends with everyone in this walmart and if not everyone likes me iâm a failureâ and u really shouldnât feel that way online either. likewise if thereâs a guy in the walmart parking lot shouting obscenities u probably wouldnât answer him and thatâs literally an exact equivalent to some of the weird stuff that people on here seem to feel theyâre obligated to respond to.

How do you think Atshi and Dazai's relationship compare to their relationship in beast, i feel like its a topic thats been left behind when talking abt beast
Ooo this is an interesting one.
The relationship between Dazai and Atsushi in BEAST is really interesting already, I love how Asagiri didn't just make it a carbon copy of Dazai and Akutagawa in the main timeline, instead its completely unique but equally fucked up. But comparing it to the main timeline I think it is the best example of just how far BEAST Dazai is willing to go in order to ensure Oda's happiness in that universe, even at the cost of tormenting someone main Dazai really cares about.
First lets look at Dazai and Atsushi's relationship in the main series.
Atsushi has absolute loyalty, love and respect for Dazai in the main series, Dazai was the first person who ever affirmed Atsushi's right to live and might be the first person to ever offer him kindness. Dazai also works as Atsushi's motivation to save Kyouka, he thinks of how Dazai chose to save him even though he would be a massive burden to the ADA, and this gives him the conviction to save Kyouka despite her past.
Dazai is the person who Atsushi always thinks of when he's in a terrible situation, he's who Atsushi wants to run too when he thinks he can't win a fight, in other words he makes Atsushi feel safe something he probably almost never felt in the orphanage where he was abused for anything he did.
(from 55 mintues)
These two pages capture this perfectly
And eventually Atsushi is able to replace visions of the orphanage director (who appeared when he was at his lowest and made him feel like he had no right to live) with Dazai giving him encouragement and the focus to keep going.
On Dazai's end:
I think Atsushi is probably the person who sees Dazai's true suffering better than anyone else alive in the series, even including characters like Chuuya and Ango. Atsushi (very similar to Oda) will often cut through Dazai's jokes and see through to what he is really thinking.
Atsushi is also one of very few characters to openly be kind to Dazai, off the top of my head it's only him and Oda who ever really say nice things about him to his face.
(notice both times Dazai is surprised by this)
Atsushi is even able to pick up a hint of Dazai's past when Dazai talks about mimic in 55 minutes.
So suffice to say, in the main series Dazai and Atsushi are extremely close, both being essentail to the others growth and a person throughout the series, I could probably go on for pages about this but for now let's talk about how BEAST twists this relationship into one of the darkest in the series.
BEAST Atsushi suffers more than almost anyone else thanks to Dazai's plan. Since he can't use Fukuzawa's ability to control Atsushi's ability, he makes Atsushi wear a spiked collar that stabs him in the neck while transformed and uses the pain of that to help Atsushi remain in control of the tiger.
Not to mention that BEAST Atsushi, just like regular Atsushi hates being hurt and hurting others, he is constantly terrified on every mission he is sent on and hates the pain he has to go through each time.
So why is he so loyal to Dazai? Unlike Akutagawa Dazai didn't physically abuse Atsushi until he became dogmatically loyal, he didn't need too, all he had to do was twist the suffering caused by the orphanage director in Atsushi's mind and make it work in his favour.
Trigger warning: Psychological abuse!
This was Dazai's method, give Atsushi an order he knew he would disobey and set things up so it would lead to Atsushi undergoing unimaginable pain and suffering beyond anything Dazai could inflict himself. Dazai twisted that pain in Atsushi's mind into
"This is what it feels like to disobey me"
And since then, Atsushi has been completely incapable of not following Dazai's orders.
Another important factor is that Dazai himself is very friendly with Atsushi, letting him call him "Dazai-san" instead of boss and giving him praise for his work. This just further cements in Atsushi's mind that Dazai is the kind, generous person who tried to help him, which makes him even more loyal to Dazai.
There's a lot more I could go over, but I don't have time right now. Overall I think BEAST really shows just how far Dazai is willing to go to achieve what he wants, the way he treats BEAST Atsushi is incredibly cruel, and then leaving him alone in a world where his only purpose was fulfilling Dazai's orders is another level of cruelty.
This is a really great analysis, but thereâs one thing I think youâre wrong about.
Another important factor is that Dazai himself is very friendly with Atsushi, letting him call him âDazai-sanâ instead of boss and giving him praise for his work. This just further cements in Atsushi's mind that Dazai is the kind, generous person who tried to help him, which makes him even more loyal to Dazai.
Itâs been a while since I read the BEAST manga, but if I remember correctly âDazai-sanâ is an address Dazai insists on rather than something he allows Atsushi to do just like Dazai insists on being alone with Atsushi over Chuuyaâs objections. The subtext of that, I believe, is that BEAST!Dazai wishes he had the relationship that canon!Dazai has with his Atsushi and is trying to at least superficially recreate that dynamic as much as his plan will allow, which isnât much.
Like canon!Dazai, BEAST!Dazai isnât generally a sadist. He is a pragmatist like Mori; the ends justify the means and the ends are shaping his world into one where Oda stays safe. On the surface it seems like Oda is the only person BEAST!Dazai cares about and that seems to be the general consensus of the fandom, but I donât think itâs true. Atsushi and Akutagawaâs lives are significantly worse than they are in canon⌠at first. If you notice, though, Dazaiâs plan ends with them in much better places than they started. As in canon, Akutagawa still needs someone to teach him to âput the sword awayâ and he has Oda and the Agencyâs kind and patient hands for that along with the motivation to change to get his sister back. Mori, whom Dazai had retire in secret rather than murder, takes in Atsushi as a proper orphanage headmaster and father figure.
SSKKâs suffering is a necessary evil in BEAST!Dazaiâs mind, but itâs not something he simply puts them through and disregards. Dazai in all universes has a decent core, if not a strictly good one: Even at his worst thereâs still something caring and good in there like how canon!Dazai was drawn to deeply, as one Tumblr user put it, humane people even while he was still the Demon Prodigy in the Port Mafia.
