Why shouldn’t they be?

THEY believe in the idea that female characters can "deserve it". Lyanna was always the peak characters for how that mindset work. They'd always said that Lyanna had "better have been raped and been in all this against her will" in order to be the "good womanhood" they would approve of and deserve to be felt sorry for in any capacity (and liked).

They've always bet on Elia specifically to be that whimpering downtrodden tradfem martyr sobbing after Rhaegar on a shiny pedestal and now, because she's not that, she "deserves it" in their minds and so they're discarding her.

And I saw the more in depth spoilers, she's neither the "doormat" they would assume an Elia who didn't care about Rhaelya is. She is annoyed and taken aback by what he did at Harrenhal (but it's only about optics), but she doesn't care about him as a man, and later considers Rhaelya as something utilitarian only.

It's kinda why you see the vitriol towards Rhaegar and Lyanna instead of Tywin and the mountain. Most people may not know such deep violent evil but being cheated on is something they've either experienced or heard about/seen in media. And we're always meant to root for the abandoned lady and hate the guy and the mistress. It doesn't matter if marriages in westros was political and forced Elia is their self insert and so she's a perpetual victim and Rhaegar is like their cheating boyfriend and Lyanna is the skank mistress to them. For that end they use Elia's tragic violent end and project it onto Elia's whole life. it's not enough that Elia died horribly, her ENTIRE life must have been horrible because what better way than to have the perfect victim female character that we can use as an OC. The more terrible Rhaegar is The BETTER because they can project their hatred of real life cheaters and bad boyfriends onto him. her marriage must have been terrible, she probably didn't want kids and Rhaegar must have FORCED kids on her. He HUMILIATED her in Harrenhall, he ABANDONED her(in the middle of the Sahara apparently and not a safe castle, nevermind that princes put their wives and families on dragonstone and fucked off to do whatever all the time) while his HORRIBLE MISTRESS got GUARDS(2 later 3 guards that died against the northmen but who cares how dare Rhaegar not leave her unguarded) and worst! He left Lyanna in Elia's HOME COUNTRY(because all of Dorne belongs to Elia apparently) it's kinda like a metaphor for "cheating husband fucks mistress in wife's own bed" to them. You can see it in the way people comment hate on Rhaelya posts that for them it's not about Rhaegar failing to protect Elia but the sheer fact Rhaegar dared not be in love with this perfect traditional delicate coughfemininecough beauty instead he fell for that ugly boyish horse faced Lyanna 🙄 it's why some of them cling onto the notion that Rhaegar only wanted Lyanna as a prophecy womb that way he didn't really love her

I was at the premiere tuesday, I will not spoil anybody here. I just need to say two things :

1. The leaks are true and false at the same time. Having the information without all the context of the play makes them biased. You had to see the entirety of the play to really understand the info. Yeah, I know, it sucks because beeing able to see the play is a huge privilege. I hope they will realise the filmed version at one point. So... be patient and you will get it.

2. Lyanna, Elia, Rhaegar and Ashara ARE NOT character assassination. In fact, the play give them a real personnality for the first time. Especialy for the women, they only existed through the eyes of men who loved them or hated them. Elia is a dornish princess, of course she is more than a victim, she is a politician. Lyanna is not just a fool girl who died at the end for the developement of male characters, she is more than that, she has here own free will. With the play, Lyanna and Elia became real character, It's the first time (with Ashara, Brandon, Aerys, Rhaella, Rhaegar, etc) the this character exist outside of the eyes of other character with bias like I said, so of course it will not be the same people decribed in the book, they are more nuanced.

I think people are mad because the characters they loved and speculated for all this years are not like they wanted them to be.
