Why are there just blobs of fake rubber meat that a bunch of unrelated microbes can build in the dirt but they've only ever been found in china and can't be classified any further than "biological objects"

Dude we figured out the moon reflects sunlight and doesn't glow on its own in the 5th century BCE. But that's also the only first recordable time that "this idea in particular" occurred at the same time as "writing it down" and those two concepts managed to really intersect in a way that is observable to us in the modern era. We're so smart as a species. How many times did this idea occur before we made it really tangible to future generations? It breaks my heart to think about, but maybe the first human who had that idea made life easier for her kinsfolk for a few generations before it got wiped out by a famine or a plague. Collective and cumulative human knowledge is such a gift and we're fucking it up so bad.

in the 90s our parents loved to take us to places that smelled like feet
(Sketch) commission for Danatfbee ππ
Really funny one two punch on my dash this morning
Btw I recently found out about the fern Sticherus truncatus and i don't like it. Why is it so bad to look at??? I hate it so much??? Cursed Cursed Cursed
If i post a picture of it I feel like there should be some kind of warning on it, in a similar category as trypophobia, but what
...Bad. Why is it doing that
Iβm so glad you asked. In the ferns youβre probably used to seeing, such as Pteridium aquilinium, the fractal patterns increase in size as you move towards the base of the plant. They taper to a point. In S. truncatus, the fractal patterns increase in size as you move away from the base of the plant, a pattern which is more commonly seen in trees. S. truncatus branches toward infinity, giving that broad, crowded look.
Okay there's an actual mathematical reason it looks Wrong. That's neat thanks for sharing
i found more pictures on inaturalist i like it even less zoomed out

the main trick to dancing at a goth club is:
1. Imagine youβre a powerful wizard
2. Imagine youβre channeling mana for one of your strongest spells
3. you can also pretend youβre a deep sea predator pretending to be aquatic plant life drifting in the currents to attract prey
Kids today need to learn how to pull the evil taffy.
4. Brush away the spiderwebs in the vast and mysterious crypt you're exploring
I made a map to express the way I feel about the geography of Middle Earth because JRRT suffers from something I like to call βhas never seen a mountain range in his lifeβ
The mountains come from the same place as the light and the music.
+++
But let's not pretend mountains are the only way that Tolkien was like "meh", when creating landforms. This world is either flat or round, depending on your species and the state of your soul.
Also, to be fair, Fellowship came out in 1954 and we didn't nail down tectonic theory until 1960, so
#my dad legit made an entire class at my college for fantasy worldbuilding cuz this map pissed him off so much#he has a PhD in maps btw (via @dragonpyre)
prev this is the funniest thing I've read all day
I want to take that course. Failing that, maybe @dragonpyre 's dad should write a book
Not this again. The mountains around Mordor are Like That because they were raised by the power of the Ring. They are entirely unnatural and are meant to look it.
A Demi god who had the power to shape the earth and was introduced by singing in disharmony with the song of creation made a fortification using the land itself that looks unnatural and disharmonious with the rest of the world?
Itβs almost like the world building reinforces the narrative or something.

another post for the young artists out there:
the temptation to start commissions is strong and i see a lot of people on art subs asking if they are "ready". here's the secret: you are ready for commissions when you have a significant number of people asking, unprompted, if you take commissions. opening at any point before that is going to be a motivation-breaking battle against the algorithm.
people asking you if you take commissions is not the same as people telling you "you should sell your art". these are well-intentioned words of encouragement from idiots who love you. someone saying "i would buy it" is also not the same-- that's a load-bearing 'would' that hides a secret 'if'.
turning your art into a business is a skill unto itself and not one you should worry about developing before your product is refined into something with an actual demand. i'll keep saying it until my breath runs out: banish the grindset demons, you are not losing money by not monetizing your hobbies. stop it. i'll get the rolled-up newspaper. i will.
