This is an establishing shot of Los Angeles, California, a city that is, by last estimate, 28% White.

There is not a single person of color in this entire establishing shot. Not a single one?? I'm genuinely bewildered. I cannot FATHOM how you would sit down and draw out this whole shot and that would not even occur to you, to put a single nonwhite person in.

And like—

The other two human shots? BOTH WHITE.

This, on top of the lightening of multiple canon characters' skin tones, on top of the fact that none of the new characters that have been depicted (like the librarian) have been people of color—it's looking racist, y'all.

So I was thinking about the whole elves-being-naturally-prettier-than-humans thing because that was always sort of weird to me when I FINALLY think I figured it out.

Humans used to know about the elves, and there are some things they still remember—hence myths about Atlantis and such. Reality is, humans and elves resembled each other in a lot of ways, but elves put themselves on a pedestal as better than every other species (that’s, like, canon, and better be addressed more fully at some point?) and that’s probably a part of the reasons humans “betrayed” the elves—they got sick of hearing that elves were better.

But it was just sort of implanted in their minds, though they weren’t fans of the idea, and elves didn’t go to great lengths to erase that idea from their minds. So humans remember myths and some things about elves, and Atlantis being the underwater city………and beauty standards.

It’s not that elves are naturally prettier than humans. It’s that human beauty standards are shaped around the natural looks of elves.

Okay more evidence:

Fitz says here that Sophie, other than her eyes, “looked like an elf.” There was something about her features and appearance that set her apart from humans.

Sophie, the one who grew up with humans, is the one who interprets this as Fitz calling her pretty.

Since Fitz was able to make this comment without any real implications picked up by anyone but Sophie, it implies that despite extreme similarities in human and elven features, there ARE features that are unique to elves—and the perspective from which we hear that elves are naturally prettier is the POV of a girl who grew up around humans in a society where people often used makeup and plastic surgery to appear more like elves due to a subconscious internalized inferiority to the species (not makeup bashing! I love makeup and think it’s fun! But you have to admit it is often used to cover up “imperfections”)

I fear that I still thoroughly enjoy the Kotlc books. And I enjoy each book more than the last. People on Keebler hate Kotlc but I have too much joy and whimsy in my heart. Maybe I’m blinded by nostalgia. There’s something about 50 different plot holes that just sparks joy. I don’t even know half of the words I’m reading anymore but I’m having fun. It’s still much better than the alchemist. I hate the alchemist.
