Here’s a list of “highlights,” or really AWFUL takes from that Lily Orchard “Fandom Torture” video:
Throughout the ENTIRE video, Lily repeatedly mischaracterizes The Legend of Korra, The Owl House, and She-Ra as all being literal “torture p*rn,” even going as far as to include a literal content warning for “abuse/torture of women of color” and “fetishized violence." Essentially Lily is arguing that those 3 shows and cartoon fandoms in general completely revel in “torturing dark-skinned girls until they break from the stress”… yes, seriously…
In regards to The Legend of Korra, Lily specifically describes the scene of Zaheer and the Red Lotus poisoning Korra as “gory” even though there is literally ZERO blood, while also describing the writers as having “sadistic glee” while creating these scenes. Essentially, Lily accused the poisoning scene from Korra’s Season 3 finale, along with Korra still being significantly weakened by the poison during her final battle with Zaheer (causing her to fall and tumble down cliff-sides), Zaheer using his air-bending to try suck the oxygen directly out of Korra’s lungs (the same technique he previously used to assassinate the Earth Queen), plus the Unalaq fight from the Season 2 finale where extracts the Avatar spirit from Korra and kills all her past lives one by one with a water-whip as “white centrist writers being turned on by the trauma and torture of a woman of color,” and “torture p*rn comparable to FREAKING PASSION OF THE CHRIST” (seriously... she literally compares Korra to Mel Gibson's infamously brutal & antisemitic film)
That is unbelievably stupid! While those scenes certainly are dark and disturbing, they’re INTENTIONALLY disturbing! The viewer is SUPPOSED to be in suspense and fear over whether or not the main character will get out of situations like these alive. Additionally, it’s not unexpected for characters to undergo traumatic crap during their story arcs, and most often it’s to raise the dramatic stakes of the conflict or to have said characters eventually undergo some sort of positive change arc in response to said-trauma. Lily acts like this these scenes are simultaneously creepily fetishistic and the darkest most disturbing crap she’s ever seen, even though they’re PG-13 levels of violence at best and are narratively meant to serve as a springboard for Korra overcoming her trauma and PTSD in the final season. Lily even goes as far as to completely dismiss Korra’s trauma in Season 4, saying that instead of overcoming her trauma she just regresses back to her original status quo, which makes ZERO sense!
Moving onto The Owl House, Lily demonizes the show’s creator Dana Terrace as having an immature “fan-girl creepypasta” understanding of depression, arguing that Luz’s depression arc during both the ending of Season 2 and all of Season 3 is somehow “inappropriate” for a children’s fantasy adventure show. Lily even goes as far as to describe Luz’s depression as “vapid” and “lacking any real narrative weight,” essentially victim-blaming Luz for being reclusive and either pushing away or lying to her friends & family due to the guilt she feels from both being separated from the Demon Realm and having been tricked into accidentally helping Belos via time-travel shenanigans (and of course, Lily also blames Luz’s depression on the show’s “serialization” for ZERO reason)!
Perhaps the most insulting comment Lily makes however, is that Lily accuses Luz’s trauma of being “unrealistic” simply because “everyone responds to trauma differently”… BULL FREAKING CRAP LILY! Just because a single individual’s response to trauma is not universal does NOT therefore automatically mean that it is inherently “unrealistic!” That is one of the most unbelieviably offensive mischaracterizations of trauma and depression that I have ever heard in my entire life, since it trivalizes and dismisses the real-life experiences of so many individuals, some of whom might have even found the portrayal of Luz’s depression authentically reminiscent of their own experiences!
Speaking as an Autistic individual who just marathoned the entirety of The Owl House, as well as someone who routinely struggles with OCD, intrusive thoughts, and anxiety, I personally found Luz’s depression arc extremely relatable due to how heavily neurodivergent-coded her character is, and loved seeing her gradually process and overcome her feelings of internalized self-loathing and anxiety!
Also, fellow Tumblr user @risingphoenix87 has made several of her own posts analyzing how Lily’s demonization of Luz’s realistic depression arc are heavily emblematic of the misogynoir “strong Black woman” stereotype, since Lily repeatedly acts as though Luz’s character is “less interesting” when she responds to trauma just like how a neurodivergent POC child would IRL.
Lily also randomly dumps more disturbing and uneccessary information about her personal history, outright stating that she immediately broke up with an ex-girlfriend while she was suffering from depression and being reclusive just like Luz was. A real scumbag move on Lily’s part there, caring only for her mental-wellbeing instead of her partner’s!
And finally in regards to She-Ra and the Princesses of Power, Lily directly accused Catradora shippers of being an example of fandom going “full mask-off” simply because she found 2 or 3 random comments underneath her videos defending Catra’s abusive behavior before her gradual redemption arc in the final season simply because they found the Adora & Catra fights “hot” (which I know for a fact does NOT represent the entirety or even majority of the She-Ra fandom & Catradora shippers). Also, Lily once again accuses all of Catra and Adora’s fights as “fetishizing abuse” while blanketly stating that ALL Catradora fans are “creepy perverts who get off on violence against women.”
Additionally, Lily insults fans who interpret Catra as having Borderline Personality Disorders, even though I’ve encountered some individuals with BPD who said that they found Catra’s struggles very relatable to their own. Lily claims that these fans are “throwing actual neurodivergent people under the bus,” which is absolutely hypocritical considering Lily’s previous ableist & victim-blamey remarks about Luz in The Owl House. Also Lily injects some misogyny by comparing Catradora shippers to “30-year-old mothers who never grew out of their Twilight phase”… classy…
And the rest of the video is just Lily promoting her crappy Sith Resurgence fan-fiction (which is an insulting attempt to “remake” the Star Wars Sequel Trilogy, which is ACTUALLY guilty of portraying Black women in a fetishistic manner through Lily’s OC Darth Amarossia. So essentially ALL of Lily’s offensive remarks against The Legend of Korra, The Owl House, and She-Ra , along with their creators and fans, were just pure projection on Lily’s part… because of course it was!
So yeah... if you're interested in doing a full response to this AWFUL video of Lily's sometime in the future @agramuglia, it'd be extremely cathartic since it's filled with so many bad-faith media-illiterate hot-takes and offensive mischaracterizations that it genuinely made me angry!
