Look I dont want to come off as unneccecarily mean but shit like this genuinely ruins any ship for me. I am writing on hannigram but it applies to anything I read. we are TAKING. Gut wrenching amazing stories with expert character writing, acting and cinematography. Stories that have INSANE potential to be made even better, a poetic relationship whom commits double suicide, and we are turning them into Will graham jerking himself off while thinking abt hannibal at 3 a.m. This is dumbing down the main text, this is a downgrade, this is reading the bible and proudly writing porn of adam and eve. I am not against cute, "turn your brain off" fluff, matter of fact I read quite a few happy fics like that but I am sick and TIRED of constantly seeing fics that are clearly written with the intention to satisfy readers who ask only for sex. It feels like car keys jingling in front of my face so I dont lose attention. This is an issue I find veery common and existing in other fandoms too, it bothered me to the point of coming to tumblr even though I never post anything here. Authors catch audiences with smut, and in order to appeal to a more general, easily distracted porn addict audience I believe they use this "tactic". I hate it. You could tell me to just filter out tags that include sexual content, to exclude explicit or even mature ratings, to not read fics that have sex in them but first of all, that doesnt solve the problem whatsoever, I want to read explicit violence and cannibalism because thats the essence of Hannibal, plus I am not against sexual content in fics??? I just dislike the nature of which it is written, in a way to dopamine hit the reader. Sex is written almost like subway surfers gameplay on the side of a video, or a fire boom visual effect. Two normal sentences are exchanged, and in the third someone says something vaugely sexual and they start blushing, or they start thirsting over eachother over nothing?? Secondly, about "you could just filter those tags, why judge what others read and enjoy" I shouldnt have to. I never judge shit. If I dont like it I DO scroll past. I already am very picky about what I read. But I shouldnt HAVE TO be cast aside to teen and up or general audience just because I want sex to be written well. For fic writers I am not talking about the quality of the sex scene writing I am talking about how the scene impacts the betterment of the story, if it is really neccecary, if it fits inside the storyline and the events leading up to it. Could your story hold up without the sex scene? The answer should be yes and in that case, is the sex scene unneccecary or does it improve your story beyond just "ooouuu and now they fuck". Isnt fic writing all about "what if this piece of media was better?". We are downgrading the source material, publishing slop. There are obviously very good fics out there, its just that 90% of fics read after filtering to the best of my ability are STILL badly written. Thank you if you read so far, I had this built up annoyance in me for this "trope" or whatever it may be called.
