if i was a popular minecraft youtuber id just tweet "hey guys stop drawing shipping fanart of me and my friends/coworkers, i only fucked one of them and seeing me paired with anyone else is kinda weird and crosses my boundaries" and then i'd turn my phone off
Very generally speaking, when you see a black man in a piece of media, be it tv show, movie, video game, etc. thereās something you often see a lot of writers do. To go against the stereotype of black men (and black people in general) being dumb and lazy, youāll see this black male character being smart and an achiever. ļæ¼
The Black Nerd. A common character type, the nerd will always be very interested in all things nerdy: science, video games, mathematics, etc. In an continued effort to combat stereotypes, the Black Nerd will be lack athleticļæ¼ism, probably being asthmatic (the nerdiest of conditions). The Black Nerd will dress smartly, suspenders and bow ties. Theyāll always talk smart too, using proper English with complex words.
Now, I donāt have a problem with a black character being a nerd, indeed black people are a people; we arenāt all the same and we all have varying personalities. The problem I have is that too often we see a distinct disconnect between Blackness and the Black Nerd. The Black Nerd doesnāt listen to hip hop or rap, only classical music. The Black Nerd only has white friends, the only other black characters are into not nerdy stuff. The Black Nerd never ever uses AAVE at any time in any context.
And again I must say that Black people, not being a monolith, there are no hard fast rules to being Black. Iām more than sure there are Black people like what Iāve described above, Iām not saying itās impossible; what Iām getting at is that the only Black Nerd we see. There are Black Nerds that play basketball, that bump Kendrick Lamar, and use AAVE since itās an ever changing dialect. Iām just saying thereās no one way of being a nerd and no one way of being Black.
Well @dumbey, seems weāre in similar boats
This aināt about him, this is about Black/Asian solidarity. Focus.
understanding anything about the history of laws is going to make you a bit frustrated in conversation with people where it comes up, but basically nothing compares to the feeling of abject derealisation that you experience when the topic turns to IP and you can't stop noticing that the average person arguing for it knows literally nothing about why copyright exists or was allowed to happen, just kinda sailing through sentences on a fully vibes based understanding of an explanation they were given at age ten
the average person's understanding of copyright, when defending it, starts with the phrase "copyright exists to protect the rights of artists to..." which is currently wrong, but would also still have been incorrect from the very first time a modern copyright was granted
the modern system of copyright is primarily used by publishers and rights-holders to enforce a chokepoint monopoly over the works of artists, who have neither the means to operate free of a publisher's censorship nor finance to defend themselves should the copyright be leveraged against them. this stands in contrast to the original system of copyright, which was also like that because I lied to you and was describing the stationers guild
To be fair, changing your mind about where a storyās going based on reader predictions isnāt always bad. Sure, itās not great if youāre all āoh, no, they figured it out, now I have to change everything because my readers arenāt allowed to be cleverer than meā ā but on the other hand, sometimes a reader will be like āokay, hereās the dumbest possible way I can imagine this playing outā, and then their dumbest possible prediction is exactly what youāre planning, and you realise that yeah, now that youāve seen it laid out by someone who isnāt the voice in your head, thatās actually super dumb.
Other variations that donāt just boil down to deliberately frustrating reader expectations include:
Changing the outcome because a reader was like āI really hope this doesnāt happenā, and on consideration you realise that you also hope that doesnāt happen Ā
Changing the outcome because a reader was thinking further ahead than you are and spotted an implication of a forthcoming plot point that you donāt like the smell of Ā
Changing the outcome because a readerās prediction drew your attention to the fact that your planned resolution would have stumbled dick-first into a massive plot hole Ā
Changing the outcome because a reader picked up on a bunch of blatant foreshadowing and symbolism you didnāt notice youād put there because your subconscious forgot to send a memo Ā
Changing the outcome because a reader proposed such an elegant solution to a legitimately thorny narrative problem that it would feel petty not to let them be right Ā
Changing the outcome because a reader was like āhey, you know what would be really fucked up?ā and the bastard gremlin that lives in your brain started smirking like the fucking Grinch

i just binge watched episodes 3 4 and 5 and im gonna probably finish the series some time this weekend up to episode 8. so. amazing digital couscous
my other tadc-sona / oc is a living cloud thing that claims to love everyone and is bad at boundaries about it. theyre smothering with affection and like... constant presence. and so they end up constantly hugging someone or being a smog cloud or like, being a second cape for kinger. they are... essentially totally unconcerned with how other people feel about them saying stuff like 'i love you whether or not you accept it' and randomly wrapping their cloud stuffing body around them as emotional support. they can also engulf people completely, and choose to smother them. this makes them vaguely threatening and they have a god/messiah complex also. despite being all 'i love everyone, everything will be okay', they kind of love to annoy people who argue with them (jax). 'you will accept that i know better than you or i will low key torture you and theres nothing you can do about it because im an angelic cloud. look how peaceful i am floating here, giving hugs to anyone who looks sad without being asked. i am bringing everyone comfort. unless you argue with me then i am going to Fix You. you poor sweet thing. i'm going to make you accept my love.' theyre kinda sociopathic like that
when they sleep their body shifts shapes and thats the only time you can vaguely see fluff limbs. but never like, in the shape or number of a person. its always like three arms sticking out of a fluff blob, starfish shape, morphing into a planet, morphing into a face. they are just a cloud fluff. no real eyes even. i mean technically they can show face parts in the cloud if they want but they don't generally. except to kiss peoples foreheads. they also get stormy when upset and twinkly lights like stars in them when calm or sleepy. they float. on account of not having a body. their room is a faux planetarium with a model solar system mobile. they kind of suck up to caine but its less like ragatha being shy and more like. 'oh you sweet stupid AI, you made the mistake of showing insecurity in front of me. i'm going to fix you too. you're too up your own ass to notice im also condescending to you. just like i condescend to everyone else. listen caine i love you. lets work on making things better. i can help you understand.'
they can also split and reform on account of shapeshifting. and change density so they are solid enough to like, hold people up. bridal style carry. they do that to ragatha most because she like. very clearly wants the biggest hugs.
they usually dont split off unless someones trying to tear their fluff off, and then they'll kind of humor them about it. or if they are bored, they will have a little butterfly fairy of fluff float off to go bother someone. they can basically turn into a swarm of annoying fairies.
they rain when they're grieving with someone and get thundery when upset. they like to portray themself as all knowing and all seeing, so they don't try to emote much like that unless its on someone elses behalf, like they can say theyre helping them process emotions. kind of undercuts their whole thing of being a perfect messiah if they just get mad or sad or surprised by something, by themself.
theyre actually pretty psyched about their new body because they can shapeshift and change size and are completely nebulous by default. they have the same kind of blunt 'well it sucks that youre upset but look on the bright side' thing as ragatha. but specifically about other peoples bodies. because how could you not love being a funny little toy. you do. you're just greiving your old body still. thats fine but not your new bodys fault. your new body is great.
they suck is what i'm saying, but they suck in a really interesting way. ragathas apologetic about looking on the bright side and like pathologically trying to avoid upsetting people. cloud-thing is just like. authoritarian about it. therapy authoritarian. you Will process your emotions as long as it takes for you to feel better. me? no i am just fine. i am in charge here. don't look at me. i mean, do look at me. but don't look at me like you think i need to process emotions. it is a burden to love everyone so much but i am, of course, processing it, and have become at peace with it. it is just my nature to help and give and know more than you. i know more than you. i'm going to smother you in a hug now so you stop talking like that. this is for you and not for me. i love you.

AND what do u know! even more ragapom!!!
one of these big new indie cartoons should release with an exclusive adopt of like the main character. pay up 10000 dollars to be the only one whos legally allowed to draw pomni. i feel like the resulting fandom drama would change the face of the internet it would be so cool
Like, they start out with someone needing to buy pomni so they can draw her for the show, or when the show ends they just auction her off to someone who's the only one allowed to have her?
The second option but do this before episode 1 drops

really funny to meet a genderless alien and make them your gender out of convenience and then fall in love and now youāre gay. you made yourself be gay.
in most cases (ie the left hand of darkness) thereās some amount of gender imagery that is latched on to to justify the arbitrary gendering. in project hail mary he meets a rock and is like this is a boy rock because iām a boy too :)
castiel saw dean winchester and said hey i like this thing. i like it so much. its a man? i love that. im going to be a man too
Posts that just fundamentally misunderstand horror movies like The Thing, that have thousands of notes, are turning me into the joker.
"The thing is only acting in self defense because it gets attacked first"
The very first experience it has with the base crew is that they save it from people shooting at it, give it warm hugs, and kill the people trying to deatroy it. After that it attacks and impersonates an unknown (at the time) member of the crew. After that it gets surrounded by dogs who are angry but too scared to approach, then it changes, then it attacks the huskies, and only then does anyone in the base camp treat it with hostility.
You can imagine anything you want for the unknowns (before the movie starts, whether it can tell animals apart, etc), but you are fully wrong if you characterize its reception as being preemptively attacked. You can interpret things lots of ways, but saying the humans at the camp attack it first is factually wrong.
"None of the men know each other enough to recognize an impersonation."
The entire first act of the movie is devoted to establishing that they know each other with an Intimacy so deep they can anticipate one another's actions and attitudes. They have been in an isolated arctic base for months and months where they can barely leave the same building. They are in one another's personal space throughout the movie. It's a vital plot point that the Thing can immitate people down to memories and personality traits. It's a vital metaphorical point as well. It's so deeply and fundamentally superficial and factually incorrect to call them unfamiliar with each other that it implies total inattention to what is happening on screen.
There are so, so many completely reasonable ways to read ideas of social disaffectation, queerness, and more into the text of the movie without misrepresenting the factual text. I'm screaming and crying and throwing up blood, what else would everyone like to propose about horror movies that sounds great aside from being entirely spurious? Someone told me psychological thrillers are the only good horror movies an hour and a half ago, we could start there. I want people to think in these ways about horror but also talking about it in a way that depends on the the text of the film does require a certain amount of knowing the actual text of the film.
Actually I think this is important tags that speak to a larger idea about horror conversation:
The Thing is, at heart, not a movie about any singular decision or behavior creating a bad outcome. Baked into the 1982 movie is failure, death, entropy, inevitable loss. It's not a movie that's meant to have a right solution, or a right decision - but when someone comes at this very bleak story without a good grounding in horror, there's a kind of urge to treat it like a puzzle. If only they were closer. If only they communicated.
That's not meeting it where it's at, because it rests on a situation where none of those elements really exist. People acted the best they could in the circumstances with the tools and information they had - and it simply was not enough. Nearly everyone dies. Even with the ambiguous ending, whoever is human is going to die, because it's winter in Antarctica and he is hundreds of miles from anywhere with no shelter and no food and no transportation. That's the sort of horror it is, the idea that when faced with extinction humanity's best efforts won't succeed. Creating an interpretation where if we had "just" this or that is shying away from the bleakness. But at the same time, not facing up to the idea that some things really might not be solvable, that the worst can happen in spite of it all, is a necessary skill. Not one we need to indulge in constantly, but we should have that knowledge.
And in a greater capacity, this is where I see things go very wrong when someone unfamiliar with or disdainful of horror tries to expound on the genre. It comes from a place of not wanting bad things to happen - not rose colored glasses or naivete - but not wanting the animal to die, not wanting the house to burn, not wanting the parents to lose a child. Not wanting to feel sick or hurt, a normal and human response to a genre which constantly steps over those lines, and quite often does so artlessly and with nothing but puerile shock at heart. That makes it difficult to examine in good faith, and wanting to see horror as something good for oneself leads most people to look for the places where horror doesn't stray close to the boundaries. Solving the problem of "bad horror" by presenting horror comedy or psychological thrillers as better side of horror, for example. But that's just another case of wanting to solve something that doesn't exist to have a solution. Part of getting the genre is recognizing not only that bad things happen in horror, but the ugly and awful and transgressive side is not a mistaken choice, not an error. It's part of what horror is, like a person, you can't understand it without understanding what you dislike along with what you like. Horror can't be corrected out of a set of flaws, those have to be accepted as part of seeing the genre as a whole.
Evil haunted dead wife picture locket that makes u hallucinate memories of a dead wife u never had frolicking in a wheat field and running across the beach and baking a big cake and she puts a lil frosting on ur nose and painting the walls on a house you never lived in
my favorite type of fictional situation where a trans person discloses to someone they love is where they do it really badly and their partner just doesnāt Get It. ālisten i donāt⦠i donāt have a penisā ā?? likeā¦. it fell off???ā style
the way naruto being a trans guy works in my head is based around the idea that hiruzen realized early on that an extremely dysphoric jinchuruki is, in fact, a possibly catastrophic public safety hazard
i mean what the fuck are you going to do when the Child Bomb That Could Detonate Under Extreme Distress starts insisting you use he/him pronouns. you canāt just say no. the little fucker could take out the whole goddamn village. so everyone was just like well thereās no precedent for this but i guess weāre doin it anyway
hiruzen is like we have to find a way to keep this kid from going through female puberty or weāll be dealing with Kyuubi Attack #2 and he informs jiraiya and kakashi of this but before they really come up with a plan hiruzen, yknow, fucking Bites It Crazy Style. and jiraiya is kind of at a loss for how to resolve this until he vaguely remembers the weird gender science tsunade used to help orochimaru do and he brings it up to her. so on top of being the new hokage tsunade has to synthesize testosterone so naruto doesnāt get so dysphoric he levels konoha in the near future. and ofc she manages it so before naruto leaves on his journey with jiraiya she sits him down with a bunch of diagrams or whatever and explains hrt to him and heās like Thatās Awesome Dattebayo Letās Do It!! so she sends him off with enough T for the next few years and thatās how that works out. anyway i bet he has his shadow clones do the shot for him

So we all talk about being in fandoms for things that are charmingly bad, and being able to acknowledge that theyāre charmingly bad. But of course some people are in fandoms for things that are Actually Amazing. There are people out there who write fanfiction for The Best Science Fiction Novel Of The Twentieth Century. Or who draw fanart exclusively of The Best Movie of All Time. And there are even more people who are in fandoms for things that are Actually Pretty Good, which is not quite amazing but is closer to it than to Charmingly Bad.
And sometimes, you have a string of fandoms that are Actually Pretty Good. And the danger of thisāthe very great dangerāis that when you have a string of Actually Pretty Good and even Actually Amazing obsessions, you start to believe that maybe you have taste. Perhaps you are now immune to the indignities of losing it over something mostly bad.
And then it is shattering to discover that no, bad things can still stick a fork in your brain. š
So I understand why the ātransformative fandom gathers around things that are not good because there being a problem makes people desire to fix itā model is popular. I even agree that itās accurate in many if not most cases. However it is not what this post is about. Plenty of people do transformative and creative fandom activities for things that are very, very good. Simplified models do not encompass everything.
And frankly, itās starting to really get on my nerves when people read āI think this thing is good. I wouldnāt change a thing about it and frankly I donāt even think there should be more canon added to it, but I am still going to write thousands of words of fic, make a cosplay, and draw fanartā and then completely misunderstand and respond with āyes I agreeāI like things that are good too. But I never feel the transformative/creative fandom instinct for them because they are too good.ā
Some people do not feel it. Other people do. Stop misreading me to avoid having to adjust your mental model of how fandom works.
one of the ways a Canon work can be fandom bait is by missing something that fans want to fix, i.e. "it's bad", but i think this is only one way out of multiple that something can be fandom bait.
compelling worldbuilding (invites interaction with the setting)
interesting gimmick (see: daemons, drift compatibility. subcategory of compelling worldbuilding)
shipping bait (duh)
original character bait (in-universe categories/factions and design elements that make it fun for people to create their own characters)
compelling narrative (invites interaction and tweaks to the storyline: AUs and fixits and so on)
basically anything that invites interaction and recombination. but fandom also has a sort of multiplying effect: the larger the interactive audience of fandom is, the more likely it is to generate ideas and works that draw in more participants. so:
network effect (the larger the established fandom, the more likely it has subfandoms and infrastructure that appeals to niche audiences)
Yes this exactly, thank you bless.
Things that have space to play in are fandom bait, but space to play in does not equal holes.
