my mom told me she used to have a coworker who had left home and broke off all contact at 17 because her parents and older brother were all abusive alcoholics, and then many years later she was contacted because her mother was now the only one left and had to be placed in a care home, and as a direct descendant with income she was legally obligated to cover the expenses for it in place of the state. but she was so unwilling to do that she instead quit her job and became voluntarily unemployed, which she planned to keep up for however long it'd take until her mother was dead and buried. which ended up not being necessary because the law was coincidentally changed in 2020 so since then she's working again but at a different school. it's probably not the most levelheaded move in the world but i really respect the dedication to the never forget and never forgive, remember how they did you dirty forever creed
