i feel like the reason people dont think much of shane losing everyhting in tlg, is cause to them now its equal. because "poor ilya lost everything when shane made him move to ottawa, while shane got to reach 3 stanley cups" ignoring the fact that ILYA wanted to move to canada and ILYA wanted to be close to shane. in their minds, everything ilya suffered in tlg was because of shanes selfishness, and now this is what he deserves. why should ilya care about shane losing his team for over a decade, his title as captain, his friends, his respect he worked so fucking hard for as an asian man in mfing hockey, when ilya lost the exact same. why would he intentionally "worsen" his career again for his husband

I agree this is part of it. This fandom goes on and on about Ilya’s sacrifices and how much he suffers in tlg because Shane isn’t willing to come out despite these sacrifices so I know there are a lot of people who think this evens them out. But yeah, obviously, for one, this just completely ignores why Ilya switched teams to begin with, ignores that he agreed to remain closeted indefinitely and has zero logical reasons to change his mind about that, and ignores that there is enormous difference between voluntarily giving something up and having something taken from you (though, textually Shane does actually textually give it up, but that’s a different can of worms, and still doesn’t change that their circumstances are still very different). But of course a lot of people have just fallen for Reid’s framing, and hate Shane the way she does, and also, a lot of them are just racist and are just not feeling the same empathy for Shane that they do for Ilya. Like, racism in particular is what’s behind people seeming to not even at any point think about how devastating it would be for Shane to lose his team, and not even like, noticing that the book doesn’t even really get into that. Like the fact that so many people just don’t even notice that huge life formative life events for Shane are consistently just not included in the text just stems from an inherent disinterest in characters of color.

Love the soft, curious moments of them sharing about their own cultures, biology, etc. I do think Rocky would have a field day when Grace explains skin as a very sensitive and permeable organ with lots of stuff packed tight on the surface.
