as tumblr's resident peafowl person, I was wondering what you think of the 1980s unproduced Moondreamers Peacock. "Frolic and her peacock pal, Fluffin, are ready to explore the universe" is the description. They glow in the dark!
I would have watched that, and I would own those toys to this day (at least the peacock one) if they'd been produced. There should have been a cartoon with a girl and her peacock exploring the universe.
Moondreamers actually existed! The show, which was part of the block bundled with My Little Pony and Friends (they were some of the friends) was about magical beings who looked like human children bringing good dreams to kids and protecting them from nightmares.
I still have my Roary the Lion.
I do wish Frolic and Fluffin had been made.
I had a bunch of these! I loved them. I don't think I ever saw the cartoon, I just made up my own stories.
This is some good fucking shit.
this is helpful to getting started on anything regardless of what you call it (from this post)
problem solving steps
IMPROVE distress tolerance skill
friend of mine recommended a video essay that's like 5 hours long about why it's currently a whole Thing for fascists to claim they only eat meat and demonize vegetables etc etc, and it's genuinely quite well researched in many places and contains some fascinating history and has made me feel very weird about my status as an adult who enjoys drinking milk. but I've not finished it and I genuinely don't know if I will because at one point the ol' "you can't say you care about animals and also eat animals" chestnut got dropped by the white vegan essayist and it put such a bad taste in my mouth that I had to leave instantly
like idk man it just feels genuinely parodic to dedicate hours to analyzing how foodways have frequently been used as white supremacist propaganda and then casually toss out an argument that pretty invariably demonizes indigenous hunting practices with 0 regard for traditional knowledge and land stewardship guiding those practices
Every time I hear a white vegan say that I want to throw the rubble of the Klamath Dams at them.
The largest dam removal in U.S. history. So successful that the salmon that haven’t run freely in the river for literally over a century came back the next year. Not steady progress over a decade as expected, the very next salmon run they came home. No one alive saw salmon in that river outside the hatcheries kept by native’s tribes and the Department of Fish And Wildlife scientists desperately trying to save them. One of the activists who helped bring the suit spoke of their dying grandmother making them promise to bring the fish home, and they didn’t know how that was possible, but they spent decades doing it.
The legal basis for successfully suing the power company who owned the dams was Indigenous treaty rights to eat the fish. Eating the fish was the one thing in a century that succeeded in being a clear and legally binding right that superseded the desires of white capital and industry. I have been going to the public interest environmental law conference off and on for 20 years where a lot of organizing for Undam The Klamath happened. I’ve heard updates about every legal tact they tried as they happened, and they tried everything.
There are healthy, thriving salmon, trout, and lamprey in a rewilding and recovering Klamath River right now as a direct result of Indigenous people eating them. Of their legally binding right to eat them. They sure as fuck care more about those fish than any white vegan ever could. They are salmon people that the Creator sent Salmon to feed, while charging the People with protecting and stewarding them. It’s not possible to learn about salmon and trout in the Pacific Northwest without learning this, and it’s unambiguously racist to dismiss this symbiotic relationship.
The white vegans are trying to get all hunting and fishing banned in Oregon, and that’s quite possibly the single most catastrophic thing that could be done to the animals here because we killed off all the major predators of creatures like deer and without anything hunting them their numbers will explode, eat all the vegetation, destroy the ecosystem, and then die along with everything else in that failing ecosystem. Controlled hunting of deer is vitally necessary for the deer to survive. This is something Native people know, but patronizing racist savior-complex white people refuse to listen to.
I have a whole collection of Oregon’s Public Broadcasting’s documentaries about Klamath River or the larger story of fish and people in the region. If you watch nothing else, watch Klamath Dams Are Coming Out, First Salmon Ceremony, After The Dams, and First Decent (Native made). It could not be clearer that the salmon are being protected and nourished by the people who eat them, and that stewardship is a massive part of their creation myths. But it contradicts political vegan dogma so they don’t listen.
The Klamath River Runs Free
#also do you have any idea how much conservation is funded by people who want to eat those animals#at least in the us anytime someone buys ammo or hunting equipment or hunting licenses that money goes directly to state wildlife agencies

something i find so interesting about maomao's dislike of lakan is that it seems to be fueled by resentment over the traits he has and she covets but doesn't have herself, both good and bad
maomoa is painfully aware of hierarchy and power dynamics and she allows them to restrict her feelings and actions even in circumstances where it's clear an exception is being made for her
lakan ignores them entirely. he marries an old syphilis ridden courtesan and boasts about it, he's so in love with her and proud of her and he doesn't care what others think or what they say about it. he claims maomao as his despite her being a child had out of wedlock with a courtesan without his knowledge. he respects and cares for luomen despite his status as both a eunuch and criminal and shows him deference. he loses his temper with jinshi despite knowing exactly what his status is and what he could do to them - it's his son that pulls him back be reminding him of the consequences he'll face, because he knows his father can't be reigned in by consequences to himself since he just doesn't give a shit about things like that
maomao wants to be detached and logical and stay out of things that don't concern her, but she cares too much and will get herself in trouble, over and over, instead of staying out of it
lakan is detached and logical. he cares deeply for those people that are important to him and is a loyal subject of the emperor, but he has no problems letting pieces fall around him if it doesn't serve his best interests to interfere. in ways this callousness makes him a worse person, but maomao strives to be able to interact with the world that way and consistently fails to do so
maomao is unable to be honest about her feelings with others and many times refuses to even acknowledge them herself
lakan is completely unabashed with his feelings. he never hid his love for fengxian despite their stations. he's clear about his feelings for maomao, to the point that many in the palace are aware she's his daughter, and speaks proudly of this family that others would hide away. he shows deference to luomen, a form of affection in obedience from younger generation to older despite their stations no longer requiring him to do so. he's physically affectionate towards and admires lahan. he's sweet to meimei and she's fond of him in return, to the point that not only had maomao wanted him to buy her, but meimei had been willing to be bought by him, despite rejecting the idea of being bought by others. he doesn't bother to hide his positive feelings at all and barely bothers to restrain the negative ones, and only if there's something in it for him
maomao fears being wrong and the consequences it could have and has been taught by luomen to never speak about something she's not sure about. she eventually becomes comfortable enough with jinshi and others in the rear palace to voice things she's not totally sure of, but it's a constant struggle for her and she's always aware of what could happen if she's wrong
lakan trusts himself. he's very intelligent and calculating, but he doesn't have the same evidence seeking, logical mind that his uncle and daughter have and he doesn't try to. he just has exceptionally good instincts and uses them to devastating effect. he didn't have any of the same clues maomao did regarding the ritual being sabotaged, but he was there because he had a gut instinct that something was going to go wrong. lakan doesn't need overwhelming evidence to make a call or decide on a course of action, he just trusts himself
i think this is the thing that maomoa hates most of all
she doesn't trust herself at all. luomen doesn't either, and despite maomao's clear admiration, it's likely luomen's refusal to speak on something without irrefutable evidence is what caused him to be thrown out of the rear palace. i find it highly unlikely that he wouldn't have noticed that jinshi and the late emperor's second son were switched, but he might have lacked concrete evidence, and conjecture shouldn't be spoken out loud. yet despite having this philosophy and instilling it within maomao, luomen trusts lakan's instincts
the only thing even slightly critical maomao thinks about her father is her disdain for the fact he has nothing bad to say about lakan. despite lakan operating in a manner completely different than him, on an entirely different set of rules, luomen admires his abilities as a strategist without reservation
maomao craves that same admiration from luomen. she wants to be able to give in to her feelings for jinshi without worrying about the status between them. she wants to be able to articulate her feelings at all. she wants to be able to hold back from making risky calls when her emotions get the better of her. she wants, in the simplest and completest of terms, to be able to trust herself
and she can't
but lakan trusts himself easily, completely, and never back down from it
it infuriates her
it makes lakan senseless and contradictory and impossible and she can't stand dealing with him because he has so many things she wants and doesn't have. and lakan would give her anything, but he can't give her this

This is the one song everyone / would like to learn: the song / that is irresistible:
the song that forces men / to leap overboard in squadrons / even though they see the beached skulls
the song nobody knows / because everyone who has heard it / is dead, and the others can't remember.
Shall I tell you the secret / and if I do, will you get me / out of this bird suit?
I don't enjoy it here / squatting on this island / looking picturesque and mythical
with these two feathery maniacs, / I don't enjoy singing / this trio, fatal and valuable.
I will tell this secret to you, / to you, only to you. / Come closer. This song
is a cry for help: Help me! / Only you, only you can, / you are unique
at last. Alas, / it is a boring song / but it works every time. /end description

the problem with tumblr spells is all of you lil sluts are casting and not giving it time to charge so you're all casting cantrips and not 9th level death spells. everyone wants to be the one to take them down no one wants to be the one who assists
we're going to try again witha little but minimal casting
IT will happen in August of 2026. like to charge and reblog to cast but cast sparingly
Wait stop. everyone +like now and spread it a little but cast on the same day in August. lets try August 6th or something.
CAST NOW
I love my job, but reblogging employment jelly for someone else I love.
evoking bertholt brecht’s “the way people cast a play!” quote as a spell against prescriptive, stereotypical, fatalistic typecasting
idk what to tell you except go look at the fishwives
What's everyone's favorite thing that gives them hope?
Personally mine is how the world is slowly moving on from cringe culture as a whole. I see people out in the world confidently wearing a Disney backpack and no one seems to question them anymore. It's nice.
Lemme tell you a secret- most people don't notice that kind of thing anyway. Usually if you see someone with a marvel or star wars or disney shirt, most people won't even comment on it. In fact, I've been meaning to tell this story- I was having a bad day this one time, a really REALLY bad day, and I needed to go to the store to get something. So, I brought my favourite stuffed animal with me for emotional support. And nobody, NOBODY commented on Piggi. Nobody stared, nobody asked me about them, in fact I distinctly remember one little girl looking at me, before her mother noticed and immediately regained her attention.
Cringe culture was never as alive as we thought it was. In the real world, nobody cares.
... You know what? This is a great idea! Reblog this post with one thing that gives you hope!
My personal Thing is writing fanfiction with my partner and my friends :)
I'm always a big fan of putting current events into historical context. I see a lot of people, especially on Tumblr, speaking super fatalistically about how the world is the worst it's ever been, the future is doomed, democracy has failed and the end of humanity is nigh. Etc, etc, you've all seen them.
But the thing is, things used to be so much worse. We've come so far as a species. Things are bad, but they're so much better than they were, which means there's no reason to believe that they cannot get better still. Human selfishness cannot stymie forward progress forever, because otherwise we would not be where we are.
We know things can get better, because they already have.
So here's a few of my favorite facts, organized by topic:

Did you hear the scientists have found a way to grow colored cotton? Thoughts?
It’s not a ‘scientists have found’ and much more ‘people have been already doing that for thousands of years and it’s just gaining more attention recently’
Scientists didn’t know. It should be “Scientists just found out”
There’s actually been a load of vitriol leveled against folks who try to raise traditional colored cottons, because a lot of cotton growers don’t want the colored cottons cross-pollinating with their standard white cotton.
But anyway cotton can be grown in lovely natural shades of greens, reddish-brown ochres, and browns, all of which deepen with a good boil in water with a bit of washing soda thrown in.
The color obviously doesn’t fade or run, because it’s not dye. It’s the intrinsic color of the fiber itself.
I....I want clothes made out of those colors. They don't hurt my brain!
Aren’t they lovely?
I’m biased because I love the natural earth tones of many fibers, of course...browns, blacks, creams, copper-reds, ect...but I think they’re just gorgeous.
https://www.vreseis.com/shop
If anyone wants to know where you can get yarn or cotton like this!
Scientists did not "just find out", and this is more of the same anti intellectual bs as the post that goes around claiming archaeologists were too stupid to know that hair could be sewn for elaborate styles.
Anyway, scientists DID figure out how to grow colored cotton. They genetically engineered it to be bright fuckin pink, and they didn't "just find out" about it, they already knew which is literally what inspired them to attempt the thing they just accomplished. Begging y'all to stop pretending that scientists don't know things, don't have interests, don't grow up in farming communities or have family who taught them this. Scientists are people. Do you seriously think people who use genetic engineering to make eco-friendly pink cotton don't know anything about textiles?
Anyway. Bright pink cotton without dyes, because science is awesome
Yes. CSIRO scientist Doctor Colleen MacMillan led the team that figured this out. They used tobacco plants for testing because of the genetic similarity. Basically if the tobacco leaves produced colors when injected with a bit of the experimental genetic material, the scientists on the team already understood that the color change would affect cotton bolls as well.
They grew bright red and bright yellow in a petri dish.
And yes, Doctor MacMillan knows lots of things. Here's a list of some of her publications.
@csirogram on Instagram
Additionally folks are researching how to create flame resistant cotton and black cotton. If a variety of black cotton becomes viable, it can stop a LOT of environmental damage caused by chemical manufacturing of black dye.
THIS. Every damn botanist I know, including myself, is at the least tangentially interested in fiber arts and indigenous methods behind things like that. Scientists have hobbies and we're all goddamn nerds so a lot of those hobbies are more niche. The anti-intellectualism is insane. I swear half of y'all think scientists are all evil cackling old men devoted to holding up colonial power systems. The work done by Dr. MacMillan is crazy cool and should be celebrated
