I’m reading Return of the King, and have just reached the chapter called “The Tower of Cirith Ungol,” in which Sam makes to rescue his master.

Something notable about this is that Sam has put on the Ring not once, but twice so far - and both times, his experience has been markedly different than Frodo’s.

Firstly, his vision is impaired. Everything he sees is somewhat obscured by a dark fog. It’s unclear whether this is an effect of the Ring entering Mordor, or if that’s just what it does to him specifically; after all, the Ring acts differently for each Wearer.

It’s the second effect that’s really interesting. You see, for some reason, the Ring improves his hearing. In both instances, he can hear orc-chatter from afar, as well as tumbling rocks and the foaming of Shelob. But what’s really wild about this is that the same never happens to Frodo.

Because the Ring reflects the Will and Strengths of the User, I can only assume this means one thing.

The One Ring empowers Samwise Gamgee’s eavesdropping.

see, my city is a little special. one of our parks with massive old trees... wasn't a park. it was a graveyard. see.. they built a graveyard... and burial pit "outside" the main street. Then, then they built around it. eventually there was no more room. it was de-commissioned. more was built on it, and the main area was made into a park. sometimes, bones have reached the surface. when that happens they are respectfully reburied, in accoudance with law. "This process is governed by Section 68 of the Cemetery Act of Ontario, which reads, “No person shall disturb or order the disturbance of a burial site or artifacts associated with human remains except on instruction by … the coroner or pursuant to a site disposition agreement.”" its official name is McBurney Park, but locals for generations remember and know it as "Skeleton Park". there are apparently 10,000 dead there. last bones placed there in 1850+ and over them generations of children have played.. artists have painted. readers have read.

I don't even know whose job it was to teach people this, but did they just stop teaching people what a bicycle bell means?

One would think that hearing a very distinct, clearly audible, reasonably loud and rapidly approaching sound of any kind would make any reasonable mammal turn to look at the direction of the sound, just purely by instinct?? If a deer heard something nearby go DING DING DING DING DING DING at its general direction, it would at least look up to see whether the source of the sound is a threat or not? Just a quick "is that something I need to be concerned about?" type of glance.

The enshittification of pedestrians has reached the point where they have less traffic survival skills than deer.
