Karelian is a Baltic Finnic language with roughly 50,000 fluent speakers in Russia and 5,000 in Finland. Its closest related languages are Finnish, Ludic, Veps, Ingrian, Votic, Estonian, and Livonian. Modern Karelian developed from Proto-Karelian, which in turn developed from Proto-Baltic-Finnic, the common ancestor of all Baltic Finnic languages.

Karelians are indigenous to the areas surrounding Lake Ladoga, however Karelians have experienced two significant waves of migration. In the 1600s, Sweden-Finland’s area of influence spread to Karelia, causing a portion of the Karelian population to flee east, some migrating all the way to Tver where they live to this day. Also notably during WWII, war zones spreading to Karelia forced many to evacuate their homes and seek refuge in Finland. Finnish Karelia was annexed by Russia in 1940, which led to the relocated Karelians staying in Finland more permanently.

In the Karelian Republic of Russia, Karelian has the official status of a minority language. In Finland since 2009, it has been officially recognized as a non-regional minority language, which in practice is just a formality.

Manx or Manx Gaelic

Manx (Gaelg or Gailck) is a Celtic language spoken in the Isle of Man. The last native speaker of Manx died in 1974, but the language has been revived and more than 1,800 people claim to speak, read and write Manx today.

Russian is spoken not in the way it is written. With vowels stress means a lot. There are two tricky vowels: О and Е. If these are stressed in a word, they are О and E, that’s ok. But if they are not stressed, they turn into А and И respectively. The word “велосипЕд” (a bicycle) should be pronounced as “виласипет”. The first Е is not stressed, O is also not stressed, the second E is stressed and it’s still E and about Д down below.

Some consonants have pairs. A deaf one and a ring one. They are Т-Д, К-Г, Ш-Ж, П-Б, Ф-В, С-З. If a ring sound is in the ending of a word, it is pronounced as its deaf pair. In a word “велосипед” Д is the last letter of a word, that’s why it turns into T in speaking. If a ring consonant stands before a deaf consonant, it also turns into its deaf pair. “лОжка” (a spoon) is pronounced as “лошка” because К is a deaf sound. So Ж becomes Ш.

As a Hindustani, Malayalee and Tamil girl, Hindi, Malayalam and Tamil are my native tongues. Even though, English is my first language, being fluent in writing, reading and speaking these languages is important to me. I do not want to have my mother tongues die. I want to pass on the beauty of these languages to my children and have them teach it to their own kids. 

I have found these PDFs online (credit goes to them) and compiled them in Google Doc folders.
