Das Reichsschwert / Mauritius sword (scabbard second half of the 11th century, sword 1198–1218)

The scabbard was probably made in Italy around 1084 for the coronation of Emperor Henry IV. The present sword, made for Emperor Otto IV (1198–1218), reused the earlier Salian scabbard. From the 14th century onward it was revered as the sword of Saint Maurice.

Inscription: Pommel "BENEDICTVS DO(MINV)S DE(V)S . QVI . DOCET MANVS", Crossguard "+ CHRISTVS VINCIT : CHRISTVS REGNAT" and "+ CHRISTVS VINCIT . CHRISTVS REGNAT . CHRISTVS IMPERAT"
