Promise to protect.

Sabine, who went to the imperial academy and learnt she was being lied to by the empire and tricked into making a mandolorian killing machine. Sabine whose family she had to break away from because they were pro empire. Sabine, who was a bounty hunter until Kanan and Hera found her. Sabine, the resistance hero. And now apparently: Sabine the Jedi?

To this day I still don't understand why they decided in the Ashoka show to give her the force. I genuinely hate it. Most women in Star Wars are either inspirational leaders with a blaster, force sensitive or just evil. Sabine isn't any of that, she gets the treatment that's usually only for female jedi or men. She's a fighter who can keep up with anything and anyone. She never needed something other than her paint, explosives and blasters to win a fight.

So I find the decision to make her force sensitive so strange. Especially because in Rebels there's no lead up to this. When she's being trained by Kanan so she can learn to wield the dark saber, (in my opinion the most logical place to hint at force sensitivity) there's no indication of it.

And why this moment? She's been in dire situations before, why now the connection to the force? Why now the push? And don't get me started on midi-chlorians. Have we just completely thrown that out?

In this video, Henry Gilroy, writer and co-executive producer of Star Wars: Rebels, answers the question: Was Sabine becoming a Jedi in Ahsoka part of the original Rebels plan? I’ll say it was absolutely not the plan. As a matter of fact, we had a discussion in actually season three about whether that...and we really felt not only did that step on Ezra’s story, but it was like a retread of, “Ok. We already did this.” You know what I mean? So, yeah, the idea of Sabine training as a Jedi when she is already, you know, this fantastic warrior of her own type? We felt like, “Well, this is overkill.” So, honestly, I had nothing to do with, um, the Ahsoka series, so I was shocked! Because pretty much, you know, our entire story team, we discussed it in season three. We thought it was a bad idea. We kind of did a pros and cons list, and we were like going, “Yeah. This is just kind of like a weak, a weak retread. Why are, why is Sabine, you know, um, why would we push that way?” um, HOWEVER, what I love about, um, the story with the Darksaber is you don’t have to be a Jedi to have Jedi ideals and, and embrace the Jedi philosophy. And I think that’s what’s really, like, the more important thing, rather than, “ok. Now I’m going to, you know, Force-push Ezra, you know, 100 feet when I’ve never used the Force before!” You know what I mean? It’s that kind of thing. The idea that they wanted to push forward another lightsaber, like, wielding character that...there’s something to that I’m sure. You know what I mean? So, I, yeah, I, I just would’ve fought it tooth and nail.
