In 1990, the high school dropout rate for Dolly Parton's hometown of Sevierville Tennessee was at 34% (Research shows that most kids make up their minds in fifth/sixth grade not to graduate). That year, all fifth and sixth graders from Sevierville were invited by Parton to attend an assembly at Dollywood. They were asked to pick a buddy, and if both students completed high school, Dolly Parton would personally hand them each a $500 check on their graduation day. As a result, the dropout rate for those classes fell to 6%, and has generally retained that average to this day.
Shortly after the success of The Buddy Program, Parton learned in dealing with teachers from the school district that problems in education often begin during first grade when kids are at different developmental levels. That year The Dollywood Foundation paid the salaries for additional teachers assistants in every first grade class for the next 2 years, under the agreement that if the program worked, the school system would effectively adopt and fund the program after the trial period.
During the same period, Parton founded the Imagination Library in 1995: The idea being that children from her rural hometown and low-income families often start school at a disadvantage and as a result, will be unfairly compared to their peers for the rest of their lives, effectively encouraging them not to pursue higher education. The objective of the Imagination library was that every child in Sevier County would receive one book, every month, mailed and addressed to the child, from the day they were born until the day they started kindergarten, 100% free of charge. What began as a hometown initiative now serves children in all 50 states, Australia, Canada, and the United Kingdom, mailing thousands of free books to children around the world monthly.
On March 1, 2018 Parton donated her 100 millionth book at the Library of Congress: a copy of "Coat of Many Colors" dedicated to her father, who never learned to read or write.

WHUMPTOBER is a month-long, prompt-based creation CHALLENGE (think: Inktober, but whumpier). There are four prompts for each day of the month, giving 124 for you to play with! There is also a list of 15 alternative prompts that can be subbed in for any day to give participants as much creative freedom as possible.
All prompts are meant to serve as inspiration without being taken literally (e.g. you donât have to include the exact wording of prompts into your work, so if you need to slightly reword a quote, that's absolutely fine). Feel free to run rampant on interpretation. For example, if the prompt is âflame", you could create something with reference to a candle/campfire/fire, your character could have suffered a burn, or the flame could be a reference to an âold flameâ - an old relationship. Itâs truly down to you!
You can produce work in any media you choose, including but not limited to: writing, visual artwork, photo/video/audio edits, paper crafts and elaborate recommendation lists (not just a list of links). You can participate as much or as little as you want (i.e. you donât have to do ALL the prompts if you donât want to) and prompts can be used in any order. They are also free to use even after the event ends.

WHUMPTOBER is a month-long, prompt-based creation challenge. There are 31 official themes - one for each day of the month - which can be used, skipped, or combined in any way youâd like.  You can interpret/use the prompts in any whumpy way you like. The prompts are meant to serve as inspiration without being taken literally (you donât have to include the exact wording of prompts in your work - for example, you can slightly reword quotes to suit your work). Feel free to interpret as strictly or loosely as you want. For example, if the prompt is âflame", you could create something with reference to a candle/campfire, your character could have suffered a burn, the flame could be a reference to an âold flameâ (an old relationship), or you can write about a character being âfired upâ (inspired to act or driven by anger).
There are 4 prompts for each day. One is the dayâs theme, which counts as a prompt. We also give three other prompts related to the daily theme. You can use any combination of the prompts to count as meeting the theme for the day. Whether you use just the theme prompt, any of the other three, or all four is up to you and the level of difficulty you want to set for yourself. We want to give everyone as much creative freedom as possible, as well as increase event accessibility for folks with triggers and squicks. There is also a list of 15 alternative prompts that can be subbed in for any day, again to give participants as much creative freedom as possible.
Creators can PRODUCE work in any media they choose, including but not limited to: writing, visual artwork, photo/video/audio edits, paper crafts, fiber arts, detailed headcanons, or elaborate recommendation lists (not just a list of links). Creators can PARTICIPATE as much or as little as they want (you donât have to do all the prompts if you donât want to) and prompts can be used in any order. Prompts are also free to use even after the event ends, and you can find a list of past prompts here.

PLEASE BE DILIGENT WITH YOUR TAGGING IF YOU WANT US TO REBLOG YOU. Only properly tagged posts are considered for archiving on the official @whumptober-archive blog. They must be tagged in the order above. An elaborate post about our tagging system can be found [here]. If you donât care about being reblogged by us, you can tag however you want.
Tagging correctly will help your chances of getting picked up for reblogging, but it doesnât guarantee that weâll reblog you. Reblogging is random and depends on our helpers finding your work using Tumblrâs search function.
Unfortunately, due to the sheer number of participants, we cannot guarantee your work will be archived. A random selection of properly tagged posts will be reblogged each day.
Whumpers who produce content for 31 total theme days are considered event completionists and will be tagged in a masterpost at the end of the month. Weâll post a form at the beginning of November asking you to tell us if you completed. This is based on trust and we will not verify your response.
Questions not addressed in one of our many event info posts can be directed to this blog. Due to the sheer amount of correspondence, we canât answer any questions that have been answered in the FAQs or rules already. We will try, however, to direct you to where you can find the answer yourself.
Late August: Prompt list is released for at least four weeks of preparation time.
September: Do as much or as little on your works as you want. You can prepare everything in advance or let September go by with vibes and start working in October. Itâs up to you.
October 1st: Challenge begins! A storm of whump breaks upon us all! During this time, some posts will be reblogged to the whumptober archive blog. We open the yearly AO3 collection for posting (optional).
November 1st: The challenge is officially over! Completionist form opens for those who want to be included in the hall-of-fame.
Early November: We release completionist and participant badges, solicit feedback, and post a hall-of-fame list of completionists by the 10th.

PARTICIPATION AND COMPLETION
Q: What do I do?
Create works inspired by the prompts or alternative prompts during the month of October. For more information about prompts and how to use them, scroll down.
Q: What counts as participation?
Create or continue at least one work inspired by one of this yearâs prompts or alts.
Q: What counts as completion?
Creating work(s) inspired by at least one prompt from each day (or alts), for a total of 31 unique prompts.
Q: Do I need to create 31 works?
No. You can, if you want. Or you can create one work that you add to every day with a new prompt. Or several works that combine prompts.
Q: Do I need to post my works somewhere to be a completionist or a participant?
No.
Q: How do you know I actually completed the challenge?
Weâll take your word for it! You do not have to message us or submit anything to us.
Q: Do I have to finish my work(s) to be a completionist?
No, you can post WIPs. As long as you worked on it in October, it counts toward completion. You can finish whenever (or not at all).
Q: Can I update or finish WIPs for the current Whumptober?
Yes. As long as youâre adding new content with the current prompts, it counts towards this year. You canât repost or link to previously posted works unless you updated them for this yearâs challenge.
Q: Is co-writing/illustrating allowed? Can I collaborate with someone or a group of people?
Yes, absolutely, and it would count towards being a completionist for both/all of you.
Q: Is there a min/max limit on word count for written works?
No.
Q: Is there a min/max limit of quality for art?
No.
Q: Do I have to do something each day to be a completionist?
No. You can skip days whenever you want, and as long as 31 daily prompts (or alts) are in your works done in October, you can be a completionist. For example, if you wrote a 1000-word ficlet that covers prompts in days 2, 3, and 17, you can check all three days off your list even though itâs only one work.
Q: Is this challenge just for fics?
No! Artworks, GIFsets, headcannons, rec lists, poetry, moodboards, or any other creative work is encouraged.
Q: How much work do I need to put in? Can I just translate something/repost an old work/slap a new color palette on something?
We want this to be a challenge, so we request that you put in the effort to at least substantially transform something youâre recycling to fit the prompt. Simply translating a work non-collaboratively, while it represents effort on the part of the translator in terms of word choice and phrasing, isnât enough to fit the spirit of the challenge, because the whump creative choices werenât made by you, the participant. However, if you want to work with a participating author/artist to translate, that would be fine under the rules of collaboration.
Q: Can I combine Whumptober with other creation challenges?
Absolutely, as long as the other challenges allow it too.
Q: What happens at the end / what do I get for completing the challenge?
On October 31st, weâll post badges and a form for completionists to fill out. You do not need to fill out the form or notify us to take a badge. The form is only if you want to be included on our completionist masterlist.
Q: What are the badges for? What do I do with them?
Some people put them on their masterlists or post them to their Tumblrs or AO3 profiles or social media. You donât have to do anything with them if you donât want to. You do not have to prove to us that you earned a badge.

PROMPTS
Q: How do the prompts work?
There are FOUR prompts per day: a theme and three ideas. The theme is a general idea or trope and the other three are more specific ideas linked to that theme. You can use any combination of prompts for that day or pick the one you like best. It doesnât matter if you use the theme or one of the more specific prompts. See this post for an example.
Q: Do I have to use all four prompts per day?
No. Use at least one, and as many others as you want.
Q: Do I have to use the theme?
No. You can use it as a prompt on its own, or not.
Q: What if I donât like the prompts that day or theyâre not relevant to my story/setting?
We also release a list of 15 alternative prompts. You can substitute one for any day. Once you use an alt prompt, you canât use it again on a different day. You can use the alt prompts in combination with the daily prompts. If a day 6 prompt is âbleedingâ and one of the alt prompts is âmedical experimentationâ and you want to combine them on day 6, thatâs fine, but you canât use âmedical experimentationâ then on any other day.
Q: How strictly/literally should we interpret the prompts?
As literally or as figuratively as you want. For example, if the theme is WATER, that could mean drowning, waterboarding, raining, swimming, take place underwater, being adrift on the ocean, constructing a metaphor about a characterâs mood that changes like a flowing river, crying, or whatever else you can think of that fits that theme.
Q: How much of the prompt should be in the work?
This is up to you. Maybe a character says the quote prompt. Maybe part of the action occurs in the place prompt. Maybe you title your work with the song prompt and it vibes with the finished piece. Somehow, in some small or large way, you need to reference at least one of the four prompts or an alt in that dayâs work.
We are not going to police your output for whether or not it fits the prompt. If you think it does, thatâs good enough for us. Please do not message us asking if your idea fits the prompt.
Q: Can I adjust the wording of the quote prompt(s)?
Yes, you can modify the wording as long as you donât change the meaning of the quote. If the quote is written in modern vernacular and your characters speak an archaic dialect (or vice versa), you can change the wording to match. You can omit or add nonessential words.
Q: Can I combine prompts? Is there a limit on how many?
No limit and combine as many as youâd like. If you create a work that checks off multiple prompts, that work will count for a fill of multiple prompts. You need to address 31 different prompts to be an official completionist, but you donât have to produce 31 separate works.
Q: Can I do prompts out of order or combine different days?
Yes and yes. Use the prompts in any order that works for you. Combine them in any way that works for you. For example, if Day 6 includes the prompt âbleedingâ and Day 23 includes the prompt âeye damageâ, you could combine them in a single work and it would count as a fill for both days. You would post it either on day 6 or day 23 (or both) for a chance at being reblogged. Keep reading the FAQ for more information on posting.
WORKS
Q: Whatâs whump?
Hurting a character, whether thatâs physically, emotionally, intellectually, psychologically, or any other way you can think of. Comfort afterwards is optional. Angst is emotional whump, so it counts.
Q: How do I know if itâs whumpy enough?
If your character is just mildly inconvenienced, it probably needs more whump. However, no participant has to prove whumpiness to the mods. Whatever you write is up to you. Please do not message us asking if your idea is whumpy enough. The Discord chat is a great place for that question.
Q: What kind of characters can I create for?
Anything. Generic âwhumpee,â OC, PC, NPC, major characters, minor characters, or whatever you want. Anything that sparks your creativity and scratches that whump itch is great.
Q: Does it have to take place in a specific fandom?
No, you can create works for your own worlds or for fandoms or for both. You can also create more generic or pan-fandom works. You can do cross-overs or use OCs, whatever you want. You can do RPF, Omegaverse, AUs, canon-compliant, wholly original, anything you can think of!
Q: Does it have to be whump?
Yes. This is WHUMPtober. There are numerous other creative challenges on Tumblr if you donât feel good about writing characters in pain.Â
Q: Can I submit AI-created works?
No. We believe using generative AI is not in the spirit of the challenge and we will not reblog or promote any works we know to be generative AI-created. This has always been our position on this issue.Â
Q: Is there anything weâre not allowed to write?
As long as it contains whump and is based on our prompts, itâs fine. Please courtesy tag your works if you post them so people who follow the #whumptober2026 tag can filter according to their preferences.
Q: What about sex, minor characters, and potentially disturbing content?
You can create whatever works are legal in your country and post them accordingly. Please courtesy tag anything you think might be objectionable if you post to Tumblr so people who follow the #whumptober2026 tag can filter according to their preferences.
Q: Is it okay if I�
Look, we honestly arenât checking thousands of works. We trust you. Have fun, be whumpy, include prompts. Thatâs it!

POSTING
Q: Where can I post my work?
Post where and how you want. You donât even have to (cross)post it to Tumblr. Just keep in mind if you donât make a post on Tumblr we will not be able to add it to the blog archive. There is an AO3 archive for Whumptober 2026, as well as the parent collection for works completed outside of the event.
Q: What timezone are you?
GMT, but post according to your own timezone. If itâs October 1st where you are, go ahead! Deadline is October 31 where you are.
Q: Can I start posting early?
You can, but this is an October event and wouldnât it be more fun with everyone doing it at the same time? We wonât be reblogging any work predating October 1st. See the above question about timezones.
Q: Can I post late?
Yes. For the sake of our hardworking Post Fairies, only that dayâs themes will be reblogged to @whumptober-archive each day of October. But you can post whenever. Some of us are still working on and posting Whumptober fics from years ago.
Q: Do I have to post my works in order?
Only if you want us to try and reblog you to @whumptober-archive. Otherwise, you can post in any order at any time.
Q: Do I have to use your tags?
Only on Tumblr and only if you want us to try and reblog your work on @whumptober-archive.
Q: How do I have my works reblogged to the archive?
Some properly tagged posts will be reblogged to @whumptober-archive. We recruit Posting Fairies to help us during the month to reblog. Not all posts can be reblogged every day. To improve your chances of being reblogged, post on the correct day (in your timezone) and follow the tagging system.
Q: Why havenât any of my works been reblogged to the archive?
First, check that youâre tagging correctly. Second, itâs purely random which posts the Fairies happen to see when they sit down in their spare time for their purely voluntary, unpaid labor of using Tumblrâs utterly awful tag search functions to comb through thousands of posts trying to catch the ones for #whumptober2026. If youâre really, truly bummed out that youâre not getting reblogged by the archive, message us @whumptober and weâll do it manually, but thereâs no guarantee when weâll get around to it â it may take several days or weeks.
Can I post to the AO3 collection after the challenge is over?
Yes! The collection is open forever.
Q: Can I cross post on other blogs?
Yes, multiple platforms and blogs are perfectly acceptable, as long as they allow cross-posting (to us). You can also post different works to different accounts under different names, without posting them everywhere at once. If you post some works under your main and others under an alt blog, thatâs fine for completionist purposes.
Q: Can I upload/repost my Whumptober content to other social media platforms?
Of course! Weâve created an AO3 Collection to archive any fics posted there. The blog is the official archive, so please respect the personal boundaries of any whumpers in your social circle (donât out anyone as a participant who would prefer not to be outed).
