Thought about this today while reading about hermit crabs.Ā
Hermit crabs start out their lives tiny and defenceless, and they choose a small shell to protect them. When they grow too big for the shell, big enough that it stops them from growing more, they abandon it and move on to a shell better for them at that size.
Does that mean the old shell was a terrible mistake? No, because it protected them back when they were smaller and more defenceless! But now itās limiting their growth, and itās time for them to find a better shell.
Humans, like hermit crabs, pick up shells when we need protection. Sometimes, we need to ditch those shells to keep growing! If we look at them as shells instead of Irredeemable Moral Failures, itās a hell of a lot easier to let them go.

So likeā¦ what do gatekeepersā¦ DO in the real world? Like if theyāre at an LGBT+ event and a bi woman is like āHi Iām Emily and this is my boyfriend,ā do they likeā¦ confront her? When a person at a support group says āIām asexualā do they just sit silently and stew in their own rage? Like how do you people function in the real world??
An enormous amount of gatekeepers donāt interact with local queer groups and communities at all. The younger ones donāt have access, and the older ones got black listed a long time ago for being vile.
That lack of access, for the younger ones, is why they are so easily targeted by older radfem types, and is why the age of gatekeepers is so skewed towards young people, btw. They have no way to experience actual queer communities, so they get sucked into this awful, dangerous parody of it.

I hate when I make a comment that someone sees as random and they ask, āHaha, where did that come from?ā
Do you really want to know the series of internal associations and mental events that led me from one idea to another? Iām guessing not so much.
What I think: āThe color of your nail polish reminded me of iridescent beetle wings, which reminded me of a dress made for an 1888 production of Macbeth, onto which over a thousand jewel beetle wings were sewn. I purchased a green sequined dress and wore it to a New Yearās Party in Ohio, in honor of the number 7, the digit I find most pleasing. I associate the number 7 and its multiples as elegant and well-dressed. I always pictured a human version of the number 7 as having flapper hair with carefully waxed curls. Waxed curls remind me of Denise Crosbyās hairstyle in an episode of Star Trek I recently re-watched and then caused me to go on another long rant about how we depict robots in media. Robots remind me of the book I am reading, in which an AI must adjust to being housed in a gynoid body and passing as human. To do this, she eats to keep up pretenses and because she enjoys it. Eating despite not needing to reminds me that I need to eat and forget to because I donāt recognize hunger. Impaired hunger symbols may be due to a lack of beneficial gut bacteria. I am attempting to propogate more gut bacteria through consuming probiotic food like yoghurt and smoothie mixes. He was informed and excited about this topic as well, and we had a wonderful conversation about it entirely unrelated to banking. I hope this diversion did not get him into trouble - I do not know what is or is not considered acceptable interaction with customers. Honestly, I think people seriously misinterpret Kylo Renās role as a villain, and not in aĀ āheās so misunderstoodā Draco in leather pants kind of way.
Heās fascinating because heās one of the few fictional villains that has some stuff in common with some of the real men who do dangerous and deadly thingsā heās posturing, he feels persecuted, heās explosive and uncontrolled, when he tries to look like a cool villain and give off that glib/ābadassā vibe, it feels forced and awkward, itās easy to laugh at him, but then he does something incredibly evil and reminds you that pathetic wannabes can be really scary dudes, too. He reminds me of school shooters, domestic abusers, extremely vitriolic alt-right internet trolls.
He doesnāt represent some grand vision or evil master plan like Voldemort. Itās all about outwardly channeling his inner turmoil and rage into self-aggrandizement, getting control over other people because he canāt control himself. He has thoughts, feelings, weaknesses, and at least a little bit of good in him. That doesnāt make him a misunderstood hero. The fact that heās human and three dimensional and has people who care about him is part of what makes him more like the real evil that walks among us every day in the world.Ā
People are always saying, āKylo Ren is such a pathetic villain, heās a whiny emo trying to dress up like a cool bad guy,ā but that is lampshaded IN-universe, that people think thatās lame, too, even Snoke. People keep thinking that Kylo was supposed to be a cool villain like Darth Vader and that the movies failed miserably in portraying him as one, but I donāt see how.
Why I Refuse To Support PETA
As most of you know, PETA (People for Ethical Treatment of Animals) produces lots of sexist, racist, fatphobic, and even ableist ads. Their ideologies match, unfortunately. They are incredibly unreasonable, too, and they effectively want to remove companion animals from human contact entirely.
Members of PETA have done the following to me.
Attempted to take my service dogās leash
Threatened to take him away
Sent me death threats
Threatened to euthanize him out of āmercyā
Claimed that I am a āslavedriverā and āactive participant in the speciesist h*l*caustā (Ah yes, please tell the romani-german-native girl that sheās basically a Nazi. Good idea.)
Left threatening voicemails on my phone.
Scared me so badly that I had to move house at one point
Grabbed my service dog
Tried to pry my hand off of my service dogās harness
Threw paint on a faux fur-lined coat I was wearing (the paint got matted in my hair to the point where I had to shave my head)
Speaks openly on their hatred for service dog handlers.
Adding:
Their āAdoptionā services are a complete lie. Do not bring an animal to a PETA facility or allow PETA volunteers or employees to take an animal. THEY WILL KILL IT.Ā
Their own documentation shows that they euthanize approximately 90 - 97% of all animals they take in, on a yearly basis. This includes everything from seriously injured/ill animals, to healthy puppies and kittens.
They support Breed Specific Legislation, and call for the mass extermination of all āPit Bull-type dogsā.
if there is anyone out there who doesnāt know this - this is really important. PETA kills and terrorizes animals. They do so for their own propaganda and in turn, profit. There is nothing ethical about their treatment of animals let alone other human beings.
Their position is, supposedly, that animals are equal to humans and as such use really ableist, racist, and wildly inappropriate metaphors that undermine real human oppression and suffering. Often just for shock value. If they applied their principle, then they are basically saying that mentally ill or struggling and homeless humans should be put to death on mass.
In addition to all of the above, they also promote the idea that dairy products cause autism.
Plus, they harassed Steve Irwinās family while they were grieving his death.Ā Theyāre pretty terrible.
The Humane Society of the United States and the SPCA are where itās at, if you want broad, effective, and ethical animal rights organizations on a national scale, though you can be really effective seeking out your local no-kill shelter or wildlife refuge.

PETA is the Autism Speaks of animals. If animals could talk or tell us what they think in plain language, they would say not to support PETA. Iām dead serious here, they would tell you not to.
