The long-lost remains of King Alfred the Great have been found buried under a car park, investigators claim.
Alfred died in 899, and his bones were repeatedly moved. He was buried in Winchester Cathedral until 1110, when his remains were moved to Winchester's Hyde Abbey, where they were interred before the high altar between the bodies of his wife and son. The abbey was demolished after the dissolution of the monasteries in 1539, and the place was left in ruins. In 1866, during construction of a workhouse on the site, the English antiquarian John Mellor excavated the area, found what he thought were Alfred's bones and had them reburied at nearby St. Bartholemew’s Church. But in 2013, when archaeologists exhumed and carbon-dated the bones from St. Bartholomew’s churchyard, they proved to date from over 200 years after Alfred’s death - sparking Graham's interest and search. He said: "Whoever’s bones they were, they weren’t Alfred’s. So, I decided to discover what happened to them. "The quest has taken me 13 years.”
shut up they did not find another goddamn king under another goddamn car park
there's this phenomenon i've noticed on youtube which i dub "man math" which is when men STEM-ify hobbies/activities/art forms in order to make them more masculine. it's very noticeable in the cooking video sphere where there's an endless stream of videos made by men along the lines of "the SCIENTIFICALLY PROVEN best way to cook an egg" (and dgmw, i watch them and find them helpful, but the observation stands), but i notice it also in the way men approach ceramics (a lot of focus on mold-making and slip-casting to perfection, basically reinventing one man mass-production rather than play and discovery), tailoring/sewing/knitting/textile art, gardening and other nature-oriented hobbies, interior decor, furniture making and woodworking, journaling/planning/productivity, even drawing and painting, there's always some man math angle to it that although interesting it often strikes me as some sort of overcompensation to move away from the inherent vulnerability that comes with art making and once you notice it it's literally everywhere
the thing about buckthena's dynamic is that i feel like there tends to be a compulsion to anchor their relationship to that of their individual relationships to bobby, in one way or another. either buck is bobby's child and therefore athena's child or buck is bobby's dog that athena kind of tolerates. and i think both views are kind of fundamentally misguided because buck and athena have always had their own relationship outside of bobby that informs their dynamic far more than reducing them to who they are to bobby. like, this duo has had their own dynamic since the literal pilot, before bobby and athena ever started dating. their relationship was founded on the ways that their similar strong senses of justice and stubborness combined with their divergent views on responsibility and accountability and authority lead to them clashing and then ultimately learning to respect and understand each other.
in many ways, while athena is often exasperated by buck and buck sometimes disagrees with athena's methods, they treat each other more as equals than people often give them credit for. they really love each other and have a friendship outside of bobby! buck goes to her when he wants to plan a surprise party and athena immediately takes maddie under her wing because she has an established fondness for buck! they sometimes solve cases together and get one another's heads on straight and yes, bond over their love of bobby, because he is someone that they both love. but more than that they're just like, two people who love each other, and i don't know that i need to analogize it in the terms of a nuclear family either way lmao.

commission for @scribesynnox: that part of the battle of the labyrinth where percy crashed his own funeral
bonus of the aftermath scene:
[id. A twitter post by @/Bennieeexyz Jury duty letter came addressed to my cat. Not a mistake. "Felix Martinez" - that's his full name according to his vet records. My last name. His first name. Somehow he's a registered voter now. Called the county clerk. Me: My cat got summoned for jury duty. Clerk: Is the name correct on the summons? Me: Yes, but he's a cat. Clerk: Is Felix Martinez a legal resident of this county? Me: He's a legal cat. Clerk: Sir, if the name matches our records, he needs to appear or file an exemption. Me: He can't file anything. He has paws. Clerk: You can file on his behalf. Me: Under what exemption? There's no box for "is a cat." Clerk: (pause) Check "unable to serve due to medical reasons." Me: What's the medical reason? Clerk: He's a cat. Me: That's not a medical condition. Clerk: It is if it prevents him from serving. Sent in the form. Got rejected two weeks later. "Insufficient documentation. Please provide medical professional's statement." Took the letter to my vet. Me: I need you to write that my cat can't do jury duty. Vet: Why is your cat summoned for jury duty? Me: Excellent question. No good answer. Vet: This is the weirdest request I've gotten. Me: Can you just write that he's medically unfit to serve? Vet: On what grounds? Me: He's a cat. Vet: (started typing) "Patient is unable to serve due to species-related limitations including inability to speak, read, or comprehend legal proceedings." Me: Perfect. Sent it in. Got another rejection. "Summons is mandatory. Failure to appear will result in contempt of court." My roommate thought this was hilarious. Roommate: Felix is going to jail. Me: This is serious. Roommate: Bring him to court. See what happens. Decided that was actually the only option left. Day of jury duty, put Felix in his carrier. Brought the entire paper trail of rejection letters. Checked in at the courthouse. Clerk: Name? Me: Felix Martinez. Clerk: (looked at the cat carrier) Is that Felix? Me: Yes. Clerk: (long stare) He's a cat. Me: I've been saying that for six weeks. Clerk: Why didn't you file an exemption? Me: I filed three. All rejected. Showed her the letters. She read through them, expression shifting from confusion to disbelief. Clerk: Someone rejected the veterinary documentation? Me: Twice. Clerk: (called her supervisor over) You need to see this. Supervisor read everything. Looked at Felix. Looked at me. Supervisor: How did a cat get registered to vote? Me: You tell me. Supervisor: This is a data error. Me: Took you six weeks to figure that out. They dismissed Felix immediately. Apologized for the inconvenience. Supervisor: We'll remove him from the voter registry. Me: Appreciate it. Supervisor: (pause) Out of curiosity, how would he have voted? Me: Probably whatever party supports universal treats. Got a formal apology letter a week later and a voter registration card. For me this time. Apparently I wasn't registered, but my cat was. Roommate: Felix committed voter fraud. Me: Felix committed nothing. He's innocent. Roommate: That's what they all say. Felix is sleeping on the jury summons now. Fitting end to his legal career. end id]
i do think buck has been excluding himself from the eddiechris family dynamic, and it is so juicy because that is not how eddie sees it. in both 8x17 and 9x18, we see eddie and chris from buck's point of view. both times, buck is with pepa watching them from the outside. even in 9x13, he tells bonnie that chris needs eddie. he is willing to sacrifice himself to keep the two of them together (a bit of a redux of the texas arc if you think about it).
on the other side, we have eddie's pov in 9x11 and 9x14 where he views them as a family. he calls buck immediately when chris is missing. he keeps up the weekly family dinners. he brings chris to buck when buck is struggling. eddie's favorite place to be is with chris AND buck. he says this in s3, and we continue to see that in his pov in s9.
it's just so interesting to see their complete disconnect that has now been amplified by the texas of it all. buck knows he will never be more important than chris, but he doesn't realize how important he is to both of them. eddie desperately wants to choose them both. the idea of picking between them hurts him to the point that he slipped up in 8x09. he knows he will always put chris first. that's not a question. but if he truly got what he wanted, he'd never had to choose between chris and buck ever again.
and the best part is the only way to get them on the same page is to make them acknowledge they have been building a family together for years because they are in love. yay.

Buck and Eddie + touch - part 1
Hey look the only good new Avatar content releasing to streaming services this year is finally coming out.
thinking about mother's boy again, as one does, and i love so much buck's desperate bargaining for eddie's life, because it's not out of character at all. he's not giving up or giving in or admitting defeat. it's an absolutely calculated, clear-eyed assessment of the situation: eddie is alone, almost certainly unarmed, expecting no danger from bonnie or earl. if buck screams for help, she'll put a bullet in his head and then go out and do the same to eddie. if eddie knows he's there, he won't leave. bonnie can make him leave, and she will, as long as buck plays on her sympathies just right.
buck does not at that point realistically expect to survive. but his chances - of talking bonnie around, of another opening to escape - are better if eddie leaves now. and even if he doesn't make it out alive, he can make sure that eddie does. so that's what he tries to do.
(and yeah, of course eddie realizes he's there, of course they save each other in the end - but they were lucky, and it easily could have gone the other way.)
idk! i feel like it often gets treated as this Dark Night Of The Soul moment for buck where he gives up in despair because he doesn't think he's worth saving, but i don't think it is! i think it's the exact same ruthless pragmatism that drives a lot of buck's risky choices, and for that reason i actually also think that eddie, if he ever found out, would understand even if he hated it.
Why is every live-action version of Avatar so deathly afraid of making Zuko look actually disfigured? Are they scared he'll look too scary? He is kinda meant to look scary!
I can't believe home depot literally produced a wildly successful science fiction musical and we all just pretend it didn't happen. on one hand yes it had a boring white guy main character but like.... home depot just... Made it? And it had shit ton of box office sales? and no one even talks about this. this is like avatar (2009) all over again
OK so. After a lot of frantic googling I realized this was all a dream. home depot did not in fact produce a wildly successful science fiction musical. I was on allergy meds and took a nap and my brain simply prophesized this. slightly disappointed because I wanted to watch it.

the other buzziest thing about buddie to me is how badly they want to take care of each other. buck is running through the hospital because eddie is hurt. he is making sure chris is taken care of because he knows that is what eddie would want. he is freaking out when he finds out eddie visited a cardiologist and didn't tell him about it. he is breaking down locked doors when chris calls to tell him something is wrong. he is rubbing eddie's shoulder during one of the worst moments of eddie's life. meanwhile, eddie keeps showing up at buck's door with food he doesn't even like that much because he is worried and he knows buck and chris love pineapple on pizza. he is sitting by buck's bedside, never straying far, giving buck medicine and water. he is reminding buck that ice goes on the eye and that he doesn't have to be anything for anyone. he knows when buck needs to come to him, and he gives him the space to do that. they want to take care of each other so badly. all the time. they are each other's safe spaces, the place they go when they are hurt or tired or scared. they choose each other and their family again and again and again. they are each other's person.
since 9x13 is the gift that keeps on giving, another thing I love about the episode is showing how Eddie is trained for missions.
Eddie is trained for following procedure as much as adapting to circumstances. he will reel in his panic till he decides it's not efficient to reel it in anymore. everything is a tool for him, including himself. he rushes in when it's an intervention (something he isn't actually trained for) like it was for Abigail but 9x13 was a mission. it was a rescue and evacuation. and this is persistent work. unrelenting work that requires you to keep going step by step no matter how much you have to go. of all the people who were looking for Buck, Bonnie and Earl were stuck with the worst choice because Eddie has always been about remembering. he's thorough in a way that comes from practice, of years of valuing details (sometimes even at the cost of the big picture). and he does not waylaid from what he knows to be true. he's a skeptic at his core and that means reliance on real things he observes. he knows what he saw, he knows what he was looking for, he finds what he was looking for. there's no distracting him from what he KNOWS. he doesn't waste time trying to know anything more than what he needs. he sees the truck, he hears Bonnie behind him, he takes the gun from her. it's point A to point B with zero space for detours. he doesn't want to know why someone did what they did, he doesn't want to know anything other than what he went there for - where is Buck? is he alive?
when he loses his calm it is still only to push his mission. and when he finally exhales and lets go of the tight hold he had on this mission all along, it's only because he has completed it and he can just be Buck's Eddie again.
