Bai Ling, born October 10, 1966
Badassness: Bai Ling started her acting career at 14, when she joined the Chinese People’s Liberation Army as an artist soldier. She then acted in Chinese feature films, and became an American citizen in 1999. Bai’s first major U.S. role was in The Crow, and she has continued to play in Hollywood movies and TV shows, including Wild WIld West, Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow, Lost, and Entourage. She played a senator in Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith (first photo above), but the scene was cut, so look for her in the special features. Bai also was the first Asian woman to be the cover model for Playboy. (I had a hard time finding photos of her that weren’t NSFW, but I figured I’d let y’all search for those yourself!)
Recently Bai came out as a child sexual assault survivor, revealing that she was abused by army officers while in service to the Chinese army. She feels that dealing with this trauma contributed to her issues with alcohol.
Bisexuality: Bai has been out as bisexual for a long time, but there was some confusion in the media around her orientation, due to both the fact that she was still learning English when she started acting in the U.S. and because her name sounds like “bi.” She has confessed an attraction for fellow bisexual actress Angelina Jolie and shared a pretty steamy kiss a few years ago with Spanish actress María León at the San Sebastian Film Festival.
Regarding her orientation, Bai says that “gender and age and size and culture are not important;” what matters is that your partner “makes your heart smile and makes you happy.”
