On Emet-Selch, Golems and ×ת vs. ××ת
Contemplating various things here and there has made me wonder if the writers of FFXIV considered Jewish history and lore when writing and naming Emet-Selch.Â
If you translate Emet-Selch''s name, the 'Emet' part in Hebrew, ××ת, means 'truth.' Selch doesn't directly equate to a word, but I've read things saying it could be 'shelkha' (your) or 'selach' (forgiveness). So you would either have "forgive the truth" or "your truth."Â
That's telling enough for our erstwhile frenemy, but then you get to other places the word 'emet' appears in Jewish lore: golems. There's a lot to be said about golems and I am not always particularly happy with the name being used in video games and fantasy, but the word means something different now than it originally did and stories change over time and all. So we're not going to get into that here. What we are going to talk about is how a mainstay in a lot of golem lore is that they have the word 'emet' inscribed on their foreheads or on their chests. What if you need to deactivate the golem, temporarily or permanently? You take away the first letter, theÂ × (yes, remember in Hebrew one reads right to left, so that is the first letter of the world) and that gives you 'met', ×ת, Which means 'dead.'Â
The golem in many stories, like the Golem of Prague, started out as a protector and defender, but eventually caused so much carnage he had to be stopped. So roll that over in your mind again: Emet-Selch is the Convocation member in charge of the underworld. He later has a 'third eye' on his forehead, sort of like a golem mark. In Shadowbringers he seems to vacillate between cruelty and protectiveness. And, we learn in Endwalker, he missing a very crucial part of his memories that were deliberately taken away.Â
End result...the Hades/Emet-Selch in Elpis becomes an Ascian who commits countless acts of mass murder and other atrocities. Truth turns to death. At the end of Shadowbringers, the Warrior of Light and Scions have no choice but to stop him.
I don't know if it's deliberate on the part of the FFXIV writers, but given how deeply they seem to delve into lore, I wouldn't doubt it.Â
Given the English naming conventions of the smaller sin eaters as 'Forgiven X', I've always had the feeling that Emet-Selch was named that because it translates fairly well into 'Forgiven Truth' or 'Forgiving Truth'.
Which suits his role in the story down to the ground.
But this is a bloody good post and I encourage all my followers who have finished ShB and EW to read it!
...!!!!!
Thank you so much for bringing up this amazing observation. Translating his name to Forgiven Truth makes so much sense in the context of Shadowbringers. Also, the whole deal with the sin eaters is that they have been distorted into something extremely different than the people or animals they once were. They may have been kind and peaceful when alive, but when infected by that much light, they become very dangerous entities who kill others and take their aether to survive. Given what happens to Emet-Selch, it's an apt comparison. The grouchy but well meaning man in Elpis who tends to the underworld becomes a fearsome Ascian who commits atrocities and tries to kill others and rejoin entire planets to survive. He also tries to recruit the Warrior of Light/Darkness to his cause as a monstrous light warden, in the same way the sin eaters infect others to essentially 'recruit' them. ooh, this is good. Thank you again for reblogging with these thoughts!
Every day I get a little closer to saying fuck it and becoming an apprentice in some at risk heritage craft or profession.
"let's have AI-"
I'm gonna go learn the art of hand engraving or thatched roofing. Maybe hand make clogs.
As a professional hand engraver, when it comes to old crafts like these, its way more accessible to get started with the basics than you'd expect. Back in the day good steel was expensive so trying something like hand engraving was expensive and difficult to justify. But now you can can just buy a good quality handpush graver online for less than a fancy coffee. Just think, for under a hundred quid you could get all the kit you need to get started with fucking up coins and stabbing yourself repeatedly!!!
Don't threaten to do it, go research it, and actually give it a go!!! Most of the books for old crafts are out of copyright. Even if you don't get a job at whatever you try, or hell, even of you don't become in any way good at it, just learning and trying something new is good for you, and it gives you a greater understanding and appreciation for things.
Fuck AI? Good. I agree. Now fucking do something about it. Return to doing human hand crafted things as an act of rebellion! Start knitting, start wood carving, start engraving, whatever the fuck. But most importantly, remember you don't need to be making money doing it to make it worth doing.
i think one of the worst things the left wing internet ever did was push the idea that oppression is basically a virtue, and being oppressed is a sign of your morality. it has made it likeâŚimpossible for some of you to hold the idea that most people are privileged in some ways and oppressed in others. AND a lot of you seem to have it in your mind that terrible people cannot be oppressed, and that oppressed people cannot do terrible things, which is a dangerous rhetoric to hold imo.
Not only is it important so you don't get taken advantage of by terrible people wielding their oppressions as weapons, but also your convictions against oppression should not be contingent on the morality of the people suffering. Shitty people don't deserve to be oppressed either. Human rights are one of those things you only really understand and believe in if you see them as universal, not conditional.

Is it possible to âbeatâ mental illness? Or does it depend on type/circumstance?
âBeatingâ mental illness is actually the norm, not the exception. Most people who have a major depressive episode never have another one. 80% of people who survive their first suicide attempt never make a second attempt. 93% of Borderline Personality Disorder patients achieve remission. Up to 74% of people with Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder achieve significant clinical improvement in their symptoms, and 20% achieve full remission. Half of Generalized Anxiety Disorder patients achieve remission after the acute phase of treatment. Even disorders with relatively low rates of remission - bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, schizoid personality disorder - generally become milder and easier to manage as you age. Psychiatric symptoms tend to peak in your 20s and generally drop off as you get older, especially if you seek treatment.Â
This is why the narratives we use to talk about mental illness matter so much. Right now, the dominant narrative is that mental illness is âan imbalance in the brainâ and that itâs largely something that people are born with. There are upsides and downsides to this. The upside is that it promotes the idea that mental illness is not the ill personâs fault, and it helps us understand that mental illness can impact anyone, regardless of their life circumstances. The downside, however, is that itâs sort of given us this idea that mental illness is inborn and unchangeable. People have taken on the idea that âthatâs just how my brain isâ, when the reality is that, for most people, mental illness is less of a stable trait for them, and more of just a shitty thing that they are going through for a little while. The idea that mental illness is just âin your brainâ also erases the very real connection between your life circumstances and your mental health - while itâs very true that a wealthy person in a happy marriage can become depressed, itâs also very true that living in poor conditions and being in an abusive marriage can be the cause of depression, and that improving your life circumstances can lessen or eliminate mental health conditions.Â
If you have a mental health condition, itâs very important that you not resign yourself to the idea that youâre going to be like this forever. Chances are, you wonât. Even if you have a mental health condition that is associated with low rates of remission, it is possible to make leaps and bounds in your functioning, and to get to a point where managing your condition becomes second nature to you. Our understanding of mental illness is improving every year, and new therapies and treatments are becoming available all the time. If you seek treatment and do your best to manage your condition, you have every reason to believe that you will make huge improvements.Â
Hope this answers your question!
The part about even if it doesnât go away it can get better with time and effort and treatment is soooo important.
I suddenly developed severe OCD when I was 18/19 that lasted until my mid 20s. It was incredibly scary to have my brain just flip a switch like that. The idea that thereâs no cure for it and no going back was even more terrifying! And actually if I thought it was going to just be That Bad forever I donât think Iâd have lived through it. But I think deep down part of me held onto the idea that I could somehow magically turn the ocd switch off and go back to normal. WhichâŚokay that was unrealistic.
But like. Thereâs a middle ground there. Iâm almost 30 now and I still have OCD but itâs SO much better and itâs manageable now. Itâs more like an annoying fly buzzing around my head that I have to swat at than this all consuming thing that engulfs every second of my day. I used to have panic attacks multiple times a day, or have these prolonged anxiety attacks that lasted weeks. I havenât had the prolonged attacks since I got prescribed medication for acute panic episodes, though, because now I can cut them off before it gets that bad. My obsessive intrusive thoughts used to take up every second of my day and my compulsions would make it almost impossible to move at times. But now theyâre more like an annoying chore I have to do. Like when youâre really focused on something then suddenly have to pee and itâs like ugggh why does my bladder do this.
Like. Okay I do have spikes of moments where my OCD gets a little worse for a bit. Especially if something else stressful is going on in my life. But Iâm more able to handle it now because I have the tools too, Iâm starting to identify triggers, and itâs always temporary and never quite as awful as those first several years.
Literally it just took time and consistently showing up for myself and doing my exposure therapy and not giving up. So yeah. Donât ever give up. Your worst moments are not forever moments. Even if you donât get cured you can get better. â¤ď¸âđŠš
my biggest word of advice to anyone scared to post their work/ocs/involve themselves in creative spaces online is to earnestly get interested in other people. be kind to others, like/reblog their work, tell them what you like about their work, get to know them as people.
this isnât to âweaselâ your way into anything or having ulterior motives or whatever. if you become friends with someone then thatâs great! but thereâs always something very personal about posting any kind of creative work. weâre all trying our best to connect with each other and the best way to get comfortable is to get to know others and show up as yourself. đŤśđž
maybe this is not my place to say because I am monolingual, and I'm sure it's part of a larger, more nuanced discussion about visibility and accessibility on the internet, but I think it'd be cool if people posted in their native languages more instead of in english. I see people do it way more on other platforms than on tumblr which is almost exclusively in english
