They all had people who’d disappeared. Most of them, though, could blame it on a giant purple alien snapping his fingers and crumbling half the world out of existence. That would have been easier–at least that way she couldn’t blame him for leaving. That way it would have been luck of the draw, nothing more. But Remy, of course, with that insufferable grin, had always turned the cards in his favor. He wouldn’t have let himself be blipped; he’d shuffle and reshuffle the deck until he came out on top. Maybe Thanos should have taken her instead. That would have made sense: one of two, fifty-fifty. She’d spent enough time around him to know the odds, but she also knew that he would find a way to rig them. 

No, when he’d disappeared, it hadn’t been Thanos. It had been him fucking the hell off to “deal with family stuff, chère,” unable to take her with him. It had been him leaving her alone in a half-empty X-Mansion, the ghosts of the vanished echoing in its halls. Anna had tried not to be mad; it wasn’t his fault, not really. She understood family stuff as well as anyone else, if not better. She, however, had made the executive healthy decision to cut ties with her mothers’ Brotherhood drama a long time ago. Remy still had to deal with the Thieves Guild. They could text, they could call, she could watch his face through a tiny computer screen. It shouldn’t have been all that different from when they stood in the same room, unable to hold him tight, to kiss his beautiful stupid face, to remove the layers between them. But it wasn’t the same.

She’d stayed here at the mansion, pouring all she had left into keeping the world spinning for those left behind (by cosmic bullshit, not by their boyfriends running off to be mysterious thief kings), and she tried not to blame him. She tried not to simmer. She tried not to be angry. If only it were that easy. 

It was a beautiful day, and she sat on the lawn with a handful of young students, glad to give them the open air to work on their powers freely. More room to breathe, less stuff to accidentally light on fire. She didn’t hear the footsteps, didn’t see him approach, he was just there, his voice so familiar, so much clearer than she’d heard it in so long. “Goddammit, Remy. Give a girl some warning next time, why dontcha?” Still, she waved to her class (be right back!) and walked towards him, gloved arms crossed, a helpless grin slowly climbing up her face. “Welcome back, babe.”

he had a grin for every occasion, despite how tall and enforced he kept his walls up, cracks formed with every facial expression he made. there was a shine of pure adoration in red eyes saved only for anna. neither of them had ever been good at the whole ❛ talk about you feelings ❜ thing, it had always been body language. the lone scoundrel,persona, with a selfish streak and the best poker face this side of the mississippi, he had spent a lifetime perfecting crumbled every time she was near.

it had never been his choice to leave. it had hurt him, shattered him. remy was used to being the one left waiting, it was the natural eb-and-flow of their relationship. it had always been worth it in his mind, as hard as it could have been in some moments. if remy had had it his way seven years ago, he would have brought anna with him in a heartbeat -- forgetten about any outsider rules he had been taught a boy, why did thieves who broke the law as a lifestyle need so many damn rules? but of course, distance was kind of their signature thing. what were they if not constantly a layer a part, if not gloves then a computer screen.

of course, in his opinion, even the best quality camera couldn’t capture her. the grin on his face slowly grew as she approached, a way to distract himself from his heart screaming at him to pounce: she would catch him ( she always did ) and tell him off, just like old times. ❝ and ruin t’element of surprise ? ❞ he reached a hand to her, his own gloves preemptively on. while it was an unforunate precaution for their relationship, remy was more than happy to go into a short comatose state just to hold her hand without gloves. ❝ i drove up ‘ere almost as soon i got back , no time to tell y’anyways , ❞ he let out a small sigh as he paused, ❝ i promise m’gonna be here more often . jean-paul got it handled back home .  ❞

16.  the tower  : what event drastically changed your muse’s life ? do they resent that event or are they glad of it ?

as remy entered his twenties, the power of his mutation only grew stronger and more unstable. with barely any control over power, he was forced to turn to his last resort: help from mister sinister. instilled with a strong sense of honor from boyhood, he felt the need to repay sinister for helping remy regain control of his powers. the worst task sinister gave remy was to assemble a group of mercenaries, a group later known as the marauders. unknown to remy until the event happened, he brought together the group responsible for the senseless slaughter of the morlocks during the mutant massacre.

18. the moon : what does your muse long for ? is it a realistic desire ?

“Please don’t steal anything while I’m literally standing a foot away.” Warren muttered under his breath, just loud enough for Remy to hear. “If you set off an alarm, it’s going to make us both look bad. Can you not, do whatever it is you’re doing, for 3 minutes?” Warren sent him a look, one that was honed after years of being on the receiving end of them. It’s not that Warren didn’t like Remy, it’s just that Remy was far from his favorite.

with a small huff, remy took a step back, ❝ no one knows how t’have any fun dese days . . . ❞ he let the silence set for a moment before looking back in warren’s direction, ❝ not like i had plans to in t’first place , a man can’t enjoy the classics anymore , mon ami ? ❞ he smirked in return to warren’s look. ❝ been a few years , ange , de ceo life still treatin’ you ? ❞

art museums are another of emma’s natural habitats. at this point, it’s turning out that she has quite a FEW of them. maybe it’s the rich heiress in her but she enjoys visiting the museums and simply staring. ❝ hmm ❞ why is she not surprised to see remy of all people here ? ❝ stay as far away from the painting as possible remy. we don’t need you sullying the piece. ❞

❝ got no faith in me ? ❞ remy asked, one of his brows shooting up in a quizical manner. moving back from the wall he looked at her again, ❝ no need to sully m’name , emma , i’m only admiring de details , ❞ after a beat of silence, his hand shot up, wagging a finger in the woman’s direction, ❝ an’ i stepped back ‘cause i wanted to , not ‘caure y’told me to . ❞

“i do not care that you were an art teacher,” raven had snuck a pack of peanut m&m’s underneath their shirt and had decided to get them out at just the right time, hoping that hearing their own chewing would drawn out remy’s noise. she watches him and then looks directly at the security camera before giving it a shrug and looking back. “are you going to steal it or not?” she asks, knowing that she probably shouldn’t encourage it but it wasn’t like museums couldn’t steal from other museums pieces. it’s what they were good at. 

raven’s voice was ( unforunately ) one he could easily pick up in any crowd. she always bolder when he didn’t have rogue around. ❝ good t’know dey still let you on de lose , ❞ noticing the candy that had suddenly appeared in their hand , he nodded towards it , ❝ you steal those from any bébés ? ❞ a quiet chuckle left his lips as he moved back, standing beside the other. he glanced up towards the same security camera when she spoke again, ❝ right now ? in dis current moment ? non , m’not an idiot . ❞

“No, No, No, No, not this.” Kitty could spot Remy out of a crowd, partly because he was easy to spot, partly because she’d know that mop of hair and those fingers itching for action anywhere. Sprinting up to him, her hand went out, pushing him back as softly as she could. “Not now, Remy! Okay? I’m here with the kids and I would really love it if you didn’t derail our field trip with a heist, okay? Okay. Now, how are you? I feel like I haven’t seen you in years…it…hasn’t been years…has it…? Has…” Kitty, full of energy, rambled on for a moment before she glances back, noticing her little gaggle of children had dispersed. “Oh, great, not again.” Sighing deeply, she swung back around to look at the painting. “What were you going to do anyway? Just yank it off the wall?”

❝ ay petite ! ❞ arms raising up defensively, ❝ now when did you get so grown up et stuffy ? ❞ he replied, shoving his hands into his pockets as he took a step back. ❝ i’ve been around , you jus’ keep missin’ me . last i heard you was up on the moon or somet’ing . ❞ during their conversation he had had full view of the small group of students slowly walking away realizing their teacher’s attention was elsewhere; a small smile growing on his face. he almost let out a small chuckle before her last comment reached his ears, ❝ m’hurt , petite . dat all you think i am , a petty thief , ❞ well, not entirely untrue, ❝ a man can’t jus’ look at art anymore ? ❞

“ shame you say this looking at a van gogh. i never did get to meet that man. ” unfortunately, van gogh was ‘too good’ – but goddamn her if she hadn’t gotten picasso to join her dimension ! why, he was the inspiration behind some of it ! “ careful before you trip that alarm – unless you’ve already cased, that is, ” she continued, standing up and nearing the painting he was staring at. maybe he was in a silly goofy mood! silly goofy and wanting to commit some fun art heist! “ and what did you have to say about this one ? tell me there’s reason beyond its clichéd beauty for its commonality in schools and pop culture. ” 

a confused expression flashed across his face for a moment, however he didn’t question her comment. he had met many strange and unusual people working as an x-men for so many years. ❝ dem little alarms ? only for show , only t’ing you’ll get for setting off one of dem is a slap on dey wrist , ❞ glancing around quickly, he dropped his voice and leaned closer before continuing, ❝ far too busy for anything exciting , chère . only a fool would attempt somet’ing like that , and remy ain’t no fool . ❞ he winked at the woman before resuming his previous position.  ❝ personally , i find it overrated . certainly his most famous , but he got better ones . ❞

“I am not your ami, jackass.” Adrian replied, as if he knew what the word means. “And i’m actually up to no bad, so check that!” Adrian tightened his grip on his sword, leaning back into position. “If it means I get to stop villains like you from doing more crime, then a few weapon charges and aggravated assault charges are nothing!”

“It’s vigilante justice motherfucker. I can do what I want, as long as it’s for the greater good.” Adrian reasoned. He knew what he was doing was the morally right thing to do, even if he had a break a few people’s bones in order to get to it. It’s the only way to achieve peace for the greater good. “Jaywalking, murder, drugs, all that shit is illegal, dude. Maybe they don’t have crime in France or whatever, but here, we have lots of it.”

the sigh that left his lips was unintentional, clearly this errand was going to run longer than anticipated. ❝ wit’ an attitude like dat i’m surprised anyone wanna call you a friend . ❞ he muttered as he pulled out a single card from the deck in his pocket; letting his hand fall to his side, remy kept the playing card secured between his index and middle finger. ❝ vigilante justice y’say ? i know a t’ing or two ‘bout that , homme , we one in de same . ❞

as he lifted his hand into the air, the card between his fingers was glowing. he threw it towards a cardboard box a few feet away from the other man, the box and its contents exploding upon contact: a tried and true gambit scare tactic. ❝ now , ❞ remy began to speak again , reaching into his pocket for another card , ❝ you gon’ let me pass and we forget all about dis or i send one of those ‘does at you , and gambit never misses his target . ❞

“c'est plutôt paisible (transl: it’s rather peaceful),” elektra muses, slipping into french that glides off her tongue, as she takes in the painting. “some would say it’s overrated. i find it rather peaceful.” there’s something about the painting that resonates with her and almost reminds her of nights she’s spent on rooftops alone, watching the stars as the night goes by. “i’ve heard it’s estimated that half of the world’s art are fakes. makes you wonder, doesn’t it?” her mouth quirks up as she watches how close the person next to her was getting to the painting. she’s in no position to judge, and no one was really getting harmed. 

❝ i must admit i’m a lil’rusty in your fancy parisian francias , ❞ remy replied, ❝ dey don’t teach us dat down in the bayou . ❞ a sly smirk grew on his face as he listened. remy knew full well she was correct, thinking back to the authentic original works of priceless art that lined of the guild’s hideout in new orleans. ❝ now dat’s just a silly theory , ❞ he said , waving a hand dismissively, ❝ dis one is real . van gogh’s brush strokes ain’t easy to replicate , especially in de swirls . ❞

logan had wanted to do anything but go to the art museum, but the school needed a few of the other teachers to help take the students on the field trip. he found himself being on the unlucky ones. before he knew it he had drifted off from everyone else, and was looking at some artwork he found quite interesting. suddenly he heard a voice that sounded all too familiar “eh i wouldn’t do that if i was you bub,” logan said turning to smile.

a grin grew on his face that could rival the cheshire cat’s. taking a step back from the painting, he eyed logan -- a familiar devious glint in his dark eyes. ❝ now what you assumin’ about moi , mon ami ? ❞ his voice was filled with a light-hearted tone as he spoke, ❝ professor logan on de prowl ? never thought i’d see de day . ❞

art museums: the city was full of them. to any scoundrel, the walls of the museum of modern art were practically screaming for a heist... gambit was no exception. ❝ the starry night . . . magnifique , ❞ he mused, turning his head to the person beside him, ❝ i used t’teach art history . . . y’really can’t appreciate it until y’right up close . ❞ he leaned in closer to the famous painting, dangerously close to setting off the silent alarm.

it seemed like it had been a lifetime ago the last time he had returned here. he had been quite shocked by the fact he still had security access onto the campus grounds. leaving his motorcycle by the gate, he decided to instead walk down the driveway, assuming his presence back at the school after so long was already a big enough nuisance to whatever kind of ❛ peace and quiet ❜ you could get at a school full of super-powered mutants. the closer he got to the school, the more he wished he had brought something, anything. instinctively, he dug his hands into his coat pockets: the deck of cards in his pocket, while primarily his weapon of choice, was also a comfortable, familiar weight in his hands. it was a nice spring day today, students and staff members were spread across the front lawn. his eyes immediately began to search for her, not that he had to search long... call it a rogue tingle.

spotting her alone in the grass, he sent a silent prayer to anyone who would listen that whatever student she had been talking to was walking away. after weeks of only phone calls, with the occasional video call thrown in, it felt surreal to see her in front of him. his steps were silent as he approached her from behind, for as loud as a person he could be remy's movements were always quiet.

❝ dey can't even get you a real classroom ? ❞ he asked as he reached her. he kept some distance, allowing her to decide how close he could get — even if it physically pained him not to reach out to grab her hand or stroke her arm. anything just to be 100% certain she was really there. ❝ désolée , i meant to tell you i was back in town, chére . i got caught up in some business . ❞

Vigilante was crouched behind a dumpster, waiting like an apex predator for the right moment to strike. For weeks, it’s been driving him crazy. There was a constant flow of people who just jaywalked across this busy street, with not a single care in the world as to how illegal that was. Like, rules existed for a reason, and if the cops weren’t around to do anything about it, then Vigilante would have to, as usual. Finally, after an hour of crouching and feeling his legs go semi-numb, he saw someone crossing the street when their light was obviously red, and better yet, they were coming towards him. Vigilante popped out from behind the dumpster.

“You know that’s illegal, right? Jaywalking?” Vigilante tried to sound as cool as he leaned against the dumpster. “Totally against the law. Major party foul.” Vigilante brought out one of the swords from his back. “Fortunately, I exist to stop schmucks like you from breaking the law all over this city. This is usually the part you start begging.”

the one thing remy could never get ued to in new york was the foot traffic. weaving in and out of other pedestrians, he was a man on a mission. His mission today didn’t include priceless pieces of art or expensive jewels: it was to simply get a bag of cat food from the pet store a few blocks away from his own apartment. seeing a rare gap in traffic for this part of the city, he took his chance sprinting across the road in a few strides. while it had been a few years since he rode with the x-men, he was no strangers to folks running around in costumes. he scanned the masked individual as he spoke, red eyes hidden behind sunglasses.

❝ i can assure you , mon ami , there are people in dis city doin’ far worse t’ings den crossing de road, ❞ he shot back, one hand slowly moving into his pocket, fingers wrapping around a deck of cards. ❝ did y’know concealed swords like dat are illegal in new york ? so best let dis go , non ? we both up t’no good. ❞
