          TRAINING  AT  SWORD  WAS  a  new  gained  sense  of  independence  .  and  to  jubilee  ,  the  xavier  institute  always  felt  like  a  safety  net  .  surrounded  like  people  who  were  just  like  them  .  a  bright  spark  appears  on  the  palm  of  their  hand  ,  followed  by  a  light  boom  when  the  item  across  from  them  implodes  .  jubilee  grins  brightly  ,  pleased  at  their  progress  .  head  turns  at  the  sound  of  the  other’s  voice  .  “  thank  you  !  ”  they  smile  .  “  i’d  like  to  think  i’m  making  pretty  decent  progress  .  but  what’s  up  with  you  ?  didn’t  think  you’d  be  the  type  to  stick  around  at  the  compound  .  ”

“No, no that’s not what I said to do.” Warren responded, sounded tenser and tenser with every word. He pinched the bridge of his nose, pacing subconsciously outside of whatever cafe he had stopped outside of to answer his phone. “I don’t care what Jim said. Is his name outside the building? Do we work at Jim Industries?” Warren ran a hand through his hair. “Yeah he did a great job of running while I was away. But i’m not longer away, so I’m back in charge. We’ve been funding the Xavier School since I was a snot-nosed brat there, and we will continue to do so. I don’t if you noticed the huge wings on my back, but we tend to skew slightly pro-mutant here.” Warren rolled his eyes, stepping out into the sidewalk, and with a flap of his wings, started hovering about 10 feet up. “I can be over there in 3 minutes- I can see the building- No you’re good? We’re all good.” Warren rolled his eyes as he hung up his phone, landing back on the ground, and noticing the crowd that had gathered around him. “No need to crowd around, i‘m happy to take-” Warren was cut off as a woman wrapped  her arm around him, bringing him close to take a selfie “-pictures. Just watch the wings.”

art museums: the city was full of them. to any scoundrel, the walls of the museum of modern art were practically screaming for a heist… gambit was no exception. ❝ the starry night … magnifique , ❞ he mused, turning his head to the person beside him, ❝ i used t’teach art history … y’really can’t appreciate it until y’right up close . ❞ he leaned in closer to the famous painting, dangerously close to setting off the silent alarm.

          it’s    nothing    more    than    a    fact    that    falls    from    the    other’s    lips.    her    eyebrows    pulled    together    at    the    repetition    of    such    a    reality.    she    knew    it    was    coming    ,    tandy    truly    did    ,    but    that    didn’t    mean    she    couldn’t    have    a    little    bit    of    hope    that    raven    would    be    compassionate.        “     right    …     ”        gaze    fell    in    a    moment    of    thought    before    she’s    brought    back    into    the    situation    with    the    quick    rise    and    fall    of    her    shoulders.        “     do    you    know    where    i    can    find    him    ?     ”

Ororo wanted to kick herself at the sound of a sly voice sidling up beside her. She should have been more watchful for shapeshifters. She should have realized what she ought to have been looking out for. Tensing, she attempted to keep her voice level, but some of her frustration leaked through. “Is that really all you are here for? Stopping by? I would have thought there was more to it. Someone you wanted to see.” Her eyebrows had risen, voice full of meaning, most of her attention going now to Mystique. Ororo was unable to look at her without thinking of Kurt, though truly, any similiarities between them were surface level at most. Kurt was the kindest person she had ever known. His mother, unfortunately, was nothing like him, accounting for the sharp protectiveness rising in Ororo’s chest. 

Unlike Mystique’s closed over position, arms folded, Ororo remained open, forcing a smile every now and then so those on the tour would be reassured, but she had to fight the desire to grit her teeth. “No deaths. This is a school. A safe place. All who visit us are under that protection. Of course, those who mean harm will soon find out exactly what that protection entails…” she trailed off, assuming the warning in her words would be clear. 

she could practically feel ororo’s tension standing next to her. raven knew that they were not exactly everyone’s cup of tea and it never bothered her. it still doesn’t. she had known that after they had gotten their beloved leaders back that the camaraderie they had shared the past five years would eventually mean nothing to the people in the school. everything was starting to get back to normal for them, and it had proved everything that raven already knew: she didn’t belong here. she had tried being good, and it had lasted her five years but all of the effort and time she had spent making those that felt lost without the people that have blipped was up now. she smiles, watching ororo’s stance, watching the way ororo was watching people, trying to be on your best behaviour seemed exhausting to raven. it was hard to understand where raven began and mystique ended, they had been blended for so long now she knows that when ororo looks at her in this form all she can see is what kurt got from her, and what she lacked. she wasn’t kind or warm or loving, but she was unapologetically herself, selfish, yes, but she knew how to survive. she wants to ask, does this form only disgust you when it’s on me?

          “     look    ,    i    know    we’re    not    ,    like    …    friends    and    i’m    the    last    person    you    expected    to    see.    i    just    …    can    i    crash    at    the    mansion    for    one    night    ?    would    i    get    in    trouble    ?     ”

sam waves off her polite apology and orders himself a coke. he can tell she’s a tough, professional kind of person, but she seems to be authentic in her care. and he’s grateful for the kindness. sam doesn’t trust easily - he’s been burned far too many times to make that mistake again - but he can see this developing into something good. something important. and hopefully, friendship.

“i did meet erik - he was kind enough to show me genosha. which was very lovely, might i add,” sam flashes a smile. “but yeah, you’re right on that front. it seems to be getting more and more complicated every damn day.”

he pauses with a laugh, almost bitter. “as for me, well - i guess i forget that my shit’s blasted all over the news now, but i’m getting there. thank you for asking. i’m sure there’s some degree that you can understand, being left and saddled with something you didn’t really ask for.”

raven was good at this game, it had been one that she had been playing for her entire life. there was a certain reputation among some members that she had held when it came to her loyalties and how quickly she could sever them if she had felt threatened. when it came down to it to her very core, she was a very selfish person that was looking out for herself. and she was a mutant, so she knew that in part when it came to looking out for herself, she had to look out for them too. especially when it came to destiny and rogue. but destiny was no where to be found and it had been a while since she had gotten in contact with rogue. there was a reason aside from another that she had found herself at the mansion. it was all so personal to her, the whole thing. she knows that people like sam wilson thrive off the greater good, wanting to help the little guy, and the mutants were that sweet spot that she could work to her angle. 

she smiles, wanting to shake her head at the thought of erik showing him genosha but she doesn’t waver, just takes the compliment for him. “i’m sure he really amped it up for you, he’s very good at that.” she jokes, taking a drink of her water. 

“So I’ve heard,” Niko said with a nod, food more for thought than any indulgence. “Raven Darkholme, right? You’re hard to pin down. I was ready to give up.”

Niko liked a challenge, and that’s what had brought him to take an interest in the figure before him. He wasn’t certain what to think just yet, victory in simple capability not quite savored as he knew how their record. Loose ends, loyalties shaken and broken. It was almost impressive.
