damn, they mad
As soon as we start treating programmers and hardware engineers like various kinds of wizards, the sooner society will get better.
Wizards can do amazing things, but have no intrinsic sense of right and wrong. You can't trust them not to leave their +2 Shotguns of Maiming everywhere for anyone to find it, because they're interested in the part where you make the magic happen, not what people will do with it, or if some vulnerable child will get hurt using it.
To complete the unbearable cringe sundae of this post, have a quote from Arcanum about humans and technology: "Technology exploded in their hands. Unburdened by long life, their first thought was how can this be used, rather than what is the cost of its use."
Speaking of trees, I’ve been reading The Overstory and it’s such an astoundingly stunning book, but the thing that made me know it was special came just a few lines into the first page.
“A good answer must be reinvented many times, from scratch.” Lodged into my brain the second I read it and hasn’t left me. It’s gonna be with me as a guide for the rest of my life, I think.
Finished this—cracked me open a little in many parts. There’s a quote in it that’s, “What do all good stories do?[…] They kill you a little. They turn you into something you weren’t."
This book has the stuff of that, for me.
Or this bit…
“Say the planet is born at midnight and it runs for one day. First there is nothing. Two hours are lost to lava and meteors. Life doesn’t show up until three or four a.m. Even then, it’s just the barest self-copying bits and pieces. From dawn to late morning—a million million years of branching—nothing more exists than lean and simple cells.
Then there is everything. Something wild happens, not long after noon. One kind of simple cell enslaves a couple of others. Nuclei get membranes. Cells evolve organelles. What was once a solo campsite grows into a town.
The day is two-thirds done when animals and plants part ways. And still life is only single cells. Dusk falls before compound life takes hold. Every large living thing is a latecomer, showing up after dark. Nine p.m. brings jellyfish and worms. Later that hour comes the breakout—backbones, cartilage, an explosion of body forms. From one instant to the next, countless new stems and twigs in the spreading crown burst open and run.
Plants make it up on land just before ten. Then insects, who instantly take to the air. Moments later, tetrapods crawl up from the tidal muck, carrying around on their skin and in their guts whole worlds of earlier creatures. By eleven, dinosaurs have shot their bolt, leaving the mammals and birds in charge for an hour.
Somewhere in that last sixty minutes, high up in the phylogenetic canopy, life grows aware. Creatures start to speculate. Animals start teaching their children about the past and the future. Animals learn to hold rituals.
Anatomically modern man shows up four seconds before midnight. The first cave paintings appear three seconds later. And in a thousandth of a click of the second hand, life solves the mystery of DNA and starts to map the tree of life itself.
By midnight, most of the globe is converted to row crops for the care and feeding of one species. And that’s when the tree of life becomes something else again. That’s when the giant trunk starts to teeter.”
she has a good life
I love playing planet zoo with my little creatures and giving them Habitat and Enrichment and seeing their happy behaviours. it is my favourite thing about pet-owning. I will give my isopods a million apple slices and my old ass cats a million shelves to roll around on, and this will continue forever

Using the term fanart for a self portrait is actually more concerning to me than the blade arm or possible very long pony tail.

From a glass plate negative in my collection. 🥰 No date/info.
Apropos of nothing, I remembered discourse. Ugh.
Remembering the discourse around those cheap kiddy art sets and how petty it got a few years ago. People have no fucking nuance. Those sets are great little sampler packs for a very young kid. A kindergartner will blaze through them in no time, smashing up marker nibs, cracking crayons and making a general mess of the little watercolors. They can try out oil pastels and chalks for the first time, and have a good time with it.
But I already knew what art supplies I liked by the time I was in 1st grade. I would have rather had however many Crayolas the same money could have bought than one of those little sets. And, if a kid is serious about art, their supplies should grow to match their needs as they age.
I get it- there's nuance. People mean well. Don't be rude, be happy they're thinking of you.
There's value in that. But fucking hell, guys, there's a point where gratitude morphs into toxic positivity and people aren't allowed to feel or process anymore.
Bro, I went fucking homeless for like a year as a kid, and I still think those sets are pretty insulting when given in certain contexts. Being poor doesn't mean that I have to be eternally grateful for every shitty piece of tat someone pawns off onto me. And pawning off substandard stuff onto poor kids doesn't make you a fucking saint. Poor kids don't have to be eternally grateful angels for your enrichment, they get to have preferences.
But sure, go make your masterpiece or whatever with your shitty little art set to prove something. I dunno what, but sure, be smug about it. A skilled artist can make something good from them, sure. But a great artist can go outside and make something good with a fistful of mud, too, so what's your fucking point?
Imagine if we did the “public libraries are punk” thing for other subcultures. Imagine if people made shirts that said “Soup kitchens are grunge” or “Mixed Use Urbanism is Juggalo”.

Don't know who needs to hear this, but:
Consider following political and social justice tumblrs under a different login than the one you use to find cool art / cat pictures / fandom stuff / kink stuff / etc
Or like just in general, if you're getting most of your political news in the same apps where you do most of your fun / sexy shit,
pls give some thought to where and when those streams get crossed, esp if you haven't really thought about it before

Peeps in extreme temperatures, plain water is NOT the only way to stay hydrated and can in fact be more dangerous if you're sweating a lot and not putting more electrolytes back into your body.
There are a ton of quick and cheap electrolyte drink recipes that you can find online. Tea, coffee, cocount water, milk, milk substitutes, juice, etc are all hydrating despite extremely persistent myths. Many fruits and veggies like cucumbers, watermelon, strawberries, bell peppers, etc have high water content and are a great way to hydrate while also getting vital nutrients. Popsicles are also a good way to stay cool and hydrated and you can buy them or make your own with whatever ingredients you want; there are recipes online, including ones for electrolyte popsicles, but you can also just do basic ones with your choice of fruit juice and whatever you want to add, like chunks of fresh or frozen fruit.
Anyone who is telling you that you can ONLY drink plain water to stay hydrated is incredibly misinformed, even if they have experience with high temperatures.
If you're feeling shitty but been drinking plenty of water and have nothing to make an electrolyte drink
1. Eat fruit
2. Eat something with salt.
I had a day during the worst of the heatwave when I was a feeling really ill and I realised I hadn't had anything with sodium for a good while. I ate some crisps (chips) and immediately felt better. Was that the healthiest option? Maybe not. Was it the most accessible at the time? Absolutely
Remember that you need salt
My mom was a camp counsellor and they were constantly telling the kids to eat potato chips as well as drink water bc chips are the easiest form of salt. Also gives you a little fat and starch boost. So yeah. Summer is the best time of year to have salty snacks!
Do all the things OP says, but also still drink SOME water in day to day life. Even if you hate it, kidney stones are real and scary and can hurt you. It's about balance. Be aware of 1) your activity level 2) the temperature/humidity and 3) how quickly you need to get rehydrated. Water is good for every day drinking, while electrolyte drinks are for exertion/being outside/hydrating more swiftly. Because of this they are PACKED with sugars, salt, and other substances that are good for that but will over load your kidneys if that's ALL you drink.
Think about what you need in the situations you find yourself in, or will find yourself in. I'm saying this just because this is Tumblr and god love it, it's a place of extremes. "You need some salt and other things to stay hydrated well, just water isn't enough!" will get telephoned into "YOU DON'T HAVE TO DRINK WATER EVER AGAIN SUCK IT WATER FREAKS" and we all fucking know it.
Turkey’s justice ministry is drafting legislation that would imprison people for publicly praising LGBT identity, criminalize same-sex engag
EXTRA INFO:
The Bill hasn't passed yet; however it is very likely. Turkey just shut down the social media accounts of LGBT+ organizations, and quietly banned/"made not possible to see" multiple dating apps for LGBT people such as Taimi. These are small steps leading up to this. Just less than a year ago the distribution of Estrogen was made ten times harder and hormone replacement therapy laws upped the transitioning age from 18 to 21. Please speak for us.
yeah uhh. i live in turkey so. fuck
