In my AP Art class, there was a girl who was just starting to experiment with mixed media. At this point she was still playing around, trying to decide what direction she wanted to go with her portfolio. So one critique day, she brought in an abstract canvas with some rhinestone highlights and painted and real peacock feathers. She loved sparkles and peacock feathers so she thought she’d try introducing them a *little*. And after everyone had given some input, the teacher gave her his advice, VERY roughly paraphrased here:

“So here’s the thing… I do not like this style. These are just elements that do not speak to me personally, but I see that you like them, and you’re doing interesting things with them.

“My biggest critique is, I only merely *dislike* this piece. I want you to make me HATE it. Go crazy with the things that you like. Don’t hold back trying to make it palatable to people like me. Because I am NEVER going to like it. And if the audience does not like it, it should drive them crazy seeing how much YOU love it.”

Her portfolio was chock full of neon colors and glitter and rhinestones and splashes of peacock feathers and it was a delight. Our teacher despised every piece lol, but she got great marks and I think even won some awards. And more importantly, she was happy and proud of the results. Because she didn’t limit herself by trying to appeal to people who were never going to enjoy what she enjoyed.

for my 20th birthday my one nonbinary friend named Scooter was like one of the only people to bring me a gift even though i was like nooo i dont need anything so naturally im intrigued when they roll up with a party bag and say 'open this but you have to read the paper okay'

flash forward, im living in my grammas basement, which is mostly cement and has no windows, and also occasionally has voles drop from the cieling because its very poorly sealed, and so i cant sleep at 3 AM because a vole is running around my room and i cant catch it

so like a normal person, i think 'hey i should make a video' and so i film a 'Karl Marx Bring Me The Horizon x Megan The Stallion Yaoi Thirst Video' in my desolate saw-movie looking basement where, the only thing visible occasionally is my hands, and occasionally i flash images of karl marx anime drawn yaoi

well the artist that draws that yaoi is on tumblr you can look them up and i did get permission for this but i know they dont like being swamped by people trolling them and i feel like its best to let them exist peacefully in their own biome

the important part of this story is that my boyfriend, currently a stranger to me, saw this video and said 'that was pretty funny' and for whatever ungodly reason went to my profile, thought 'hey this person's pretty cute' instead of thinking i might be insane like everyone else and then we started talking after that (we've been together almost three years and live together now)

well anyway for our 1 year anniversary i, wanted to pay proper tribute to the marx doll, and we were moving in together so i knew. i knew it was time. he was too good for me. so i reached out to the karl marx yaoi artist on tumblr and said 'hey i want to properly thank you for letting me use your art in my video. do you like puppets?' to which they went '?' and i showed them the puppet

“why you scared?”
