I don't know you but I do wanna follow you. Your account seems interesting
I came on the transfem tag and I found you but I only came here to ask for help on something, it's not that serious, dw. I just need the opinion of a transfem person
So, I have this transfem OC of mine who is a gymnast. She competed in male gymnastics until the age of 12, which is when she realized she's trans. She's currently 19
I don't know how to go on about this though. Should I make her:
A) Continue competing in male gymnastics
B) Switch her to female gymnastics after she realized she's trans
Her being trans and her being a gymnast are both plot necessary, so no I can't make her anything else unless I change a whole sub-plot which kinda ruins the main plot
I don't know which one I should do and I don't wanna be accidentally transphobic to women because believe me I am not ttansphobic in any way and I have no sinister intentions. Which is why I decided to ask trans women themselves what they think on the matter, but since I don't know any trans women, I had to go on Tumblr to ask.
I promise you, I am not using trans women just for plot, I just made this character and decided she's trans so I decided to incorporate that into the story to make it feel more realistic. Like, her dealing with transphobia, her dealing with gender dysphoria, etc.
I am so sorry for this question, I do not mean to be rude in any way
I don't think your question is rude at all.
The reality is that it depends on your goals for the character- if she's out and accepted generally, she should be in the women's.
If shes not out (reasons can vary from lack of self acceptance, to not feeling as if her environment would be socially supportive, all the way to the fear of losing her ability to compete at all because of her trans identity.) She probably should still be with the men for the sake of telling that story.
To be clear, I believe trans women should compete with cis women in sports, but we live in a world where exclusion and hostility towards trans people are unfortunately common, and if your point is to critic and showcase that injustice, then you need to be able to showcase situations where the injustice is clear.
Point being it depends on your goals for the character.
I suggest looking into stories of actual trans athletes and seeing what they say its been like for them ^^
