iâve marked the major light sources. YELLOW is the strongest. PINK is the same as yellow (the sky, basically), but itâs coming in at a steeper angle, so itâs not as strong. the place where pink and yellow meet is where youâre most likely to find the ânaturalâ color of the person youâre painting. forehead, collarbone, on either side of the bridge of the nose, etc.
the BLUE is the reflective lighting.
in this case, itâs false hollywood lighting. if you look in mishaâs eyes, youâll see white reflective dots. those dots are actually the reflection of one of those big white cards you sometimes see on film sets (i have no idea what the official term for them is). film crews use them to reflect light up into actorsâ faces so you can see them better.
if i were using a difference source photo, the BLUE might come from water, a bright sandy beach, or even the shirt the person is wearing. itâs secondary light reflecting onto a personâs face from something else thatâs being illuminated by the primary light.
i hope that helps? any place the light isnât touching is the elephant graveyard where the hyenas live. so donât go there.
those are just the darkest places. under his hair, inside the hollows of his eyes, under parts of his chin. the hollywood lighting card thingys are meant to get rid of those shadows, so misha is actually really well lit in this shot. :)
