🍖 How to Build a Culture Without Just Inventing Spices and Necklaces
(a worldbuilding roast. with love.)
So. You’re building a fantasy world, and you’ve just invented: → Three types of ceremonial jewelry → A spice that tastes like cinnamon if it were bitter and cursed → A holiday where everyone wears gold and screams at dawn
Cute. But that’s not culture. That’s aesthetics.
And if your worldbuilding is all outfits, dances, and spice blends with vaguely mystical names, your story’s probably going to feel like a cosplay convention held inside a Pinterest board.
Here’s how to fix that—aka: how to build a real, functioning culture that shapes your story, not just its vibes.
─────── ✦ ───────
🔗 Culture Is Built on Power, Not Just Style
Ask yourself: → Who’s in charge, and why? → Who has land? Who doesn’t? → What’s considered taboo, sacred, or punishable by death?
Culture is shaped by who gets to make the rules and who gets crushed by them. That’s where things like religion, family structure, class divisions, gender roles, and social expectations actually come from.
Start there. Not at the embroidery.
─────── ✦ ───────
2.🪓 Culture Comes From Conflict
Did this society evolve peacefully? Was it colonized? Did it colonize? Was it rebuilt after a war? Is it still in one?
→ What was destroyed and mythologized? → What do the survivors still whisper about? → What do children get taught in school that’s… suspiciously sanitized?
No culture is neutral. Every tradition has a history, and that history should taste like blood, loss, or propaganda.
─────── ✦ ───────
3.🧠 Belief Systems > Customs Lists
Sure, rituals and holidays are cool. But what do people believe about: → Death? → Love? → Time? → The natural world? → Justice?
Example: A society that believes time is cyclical vs. one that sees time as linear will approach everything—from prison sentences to grief—completely differently.
You don’t need to invent 80 gods. You need to know what those gods mean to the people who pray to them.
─────── ✦ ───────
4.🫀 Culture Controls Behavior (Quietly)
Culture shows up in: → What people apologize for → What insults cut deepest → What people are embarrassed about → What’s praised publicly vs. what’s hidden privately
For instance: → A culture obsessed with stoicism won’t say “I love you.” They’ll say “Have you eaten?” → A culture built on legacy might prioritize ancestor veneration, archival writing, name inheritance.
This stuff? Way more immersive than giving everyone matching earrings.
─────── ✦ ───────
5. 🏠 Culture = Daily Life, Not Just Festivals
Sure, your MC might attend a funeral where people paint their faces blue. But what about: → Breakfast routines? → How people greet each other on the street? → Who cooks, and who eats first? → What’s considered “clean” or “proper”? → How is parenting handled? Divorce?
Culture is what happens between plot points. It should shape your character’s assumptions, language, fears, and habits—whether or not a festival is going on.
─────── ✦ ───────
6. 💬 Let Your Characters Disagree With Their Own Culture
A culture isn’t a monolith.
Even in deeply traditional societies, people: → Rebel → Question → Break rules → Misinterpret laws → Mock sacred things → Act hypocritically → Weaponize or resist what’s expected
Let your characters wrestle with the culture around them. That’s where realism (and tension) lives.
─────── ✦ ───────
7.🧼 Beware the “Pretty = Good” Trap
Worldbuilding gets boring fast when: → The protagonist’s homeland is beautiful and pure → The enemy’s culture is dark and “barbaric” → Every detail just reinforces who the reader should like
You can—and should—challenge the aesthetic hierarchy. → Let ugly things be beloved. → Let beautiful things be corrupt. → Let your MC romanticize their culture and then get disillusioned by it later.
─────── ✦ ───────
📍 TL;DR (but like, spicy): → Culture is not food and jewelry. → Culture is power, fear, memory, contradiction. → Stop inventing spices until you know who starved last winter. → Let your world feel lived in, not curated.
The best cultural worldbuilding doesn’t look like a list. It feels like a system. A pressure. A presence your characters can’t escape—even if they try.
Now go. Build something real. (You can add spices later.)

A little excerpt from the core principles of a ttrpg I'm writing (well, expanding on), based on beat-'em-up video games: Not always serious, but always sincere. Brawlers can punch their way out of steel cages. Whole roast chickens fall out of trash cans, perfectly edible. A Boss named Max Mustard has stolen EVERY hot dog. This game can be serious, but it’s also primed for silliness. Despite this, the world will never be incredulous or sarcastic about itself. All these things are facts of life. Brawlers can smash anything. Street chicken gives you health. Max Mustard will be the end of my food truck business, please help me. This game is not a faulty simulation of our world. It is an honest depiction of a world where all of the serious and silly things are real and true. Never cheapen the game by having the world suggest it’s above its own premise.
me: my Sleep No More tabletop game has been playtested and it’s ready to share with the world! hooray for being done with a massive, complex (but super rewarding) project!
also me: actually maybe I do want to add detailed descriptions of each of the shrines in the graveyard on the third floor
Anyway, I made a game. If you want to go back to the Manderly again, you can’t, but you can make your friends experience a version of it in TTRPG form.
I reserve the right to keep adding more details, though.

Her name is Hexen-Blumen and she is DGGBOT aka @statsbot’s new little sister I just gave birth to. Her job is to generate hex maps based on natural language prompts. You want an 8x12 hex crawl with detailed encounters and landmarks, on a terraformed mars (please make all plains, highlands, and desert hexes Red)? She can do that. You want a 64 x 96 world map behemoth? She can do that (but don’t expect detailed hexes for all like 6000? Hexes you psycho). She understands how to configure her own climate, temperature, moisture, and landmass simulations and perlin noise so YOU don’t have to. Need a city map? Ehhhhhh maybe a different bot.
Hexen-Blumen will be accessible through her own dedicated bot when she’s done. Or maybe DGGbot. I haven’t decided yet. This version will have hard limits on canvas size. A portable executable version will be made available at a later date with a canvas size of “as much as your computer can handle” and a hex description cap of “I don’t give a shit, use your own API key and burn five hundred bucks doing this if you want”.
Coming later: rivers, landmarks, charming programmer art.
200 Word RPGs 2025
Each November, some people try to write a novel. Others would prefer to do as little writing as possible. For those who wish to challenge their ability to not write, we offer this alternative: producing a complete, playable roleplaying game in two hundred words or fewer.
This is the submission thread for the 2025 event, running from November 1st, 2025 through November 30th, 2025. Submission guidelines can be found in this blog's pinned post, here.
FINISH SOMETHING
A solo journaling game for those who otherwise won’t By Julian Coker
You are YOURSELF, and You are a STRIVER. You both must… FINISH SOMETHING.
As YOURSELF, pick a real project you’ve left unfinished. Game designer reading this: pick a game that died in drafts, or languishes in a smattering of sticky-notes, or drifts in your imagination.
As your STRIVER, pick a grand and fantastical task. A hero must slay the dragon. A romantic dyke must woo the girl. A lost boy must escape his nightmares.
Each day, YOU work on your project. Open the doc once per day. Look at it for ten minutes, if you do nothing else. Let the striver claw inside you. At the conclusion of each day, reflect on your progress. Map this onto your STRIVER’s journey. On days indeterminate, roll a d6.
DID YOU…
Pivot? What changed your Striver’s approach?
Explore? What did they find or learn?
Refine? What new detail becomes critical?
Elaborate? What depths have been reached?
Endure? How do they weather the storm?
STRIVE? What great progress did they make?
Write a brief entry, nightly, one page at most, on the developments of your STRIVER’S journey. They FINISH SOMETHING… once you do.
This is basically how my huskies see themselves when they try to hunt deer in the forest behind our house. And they would have succeeded too if it wasn't for that meddling fence! The full hours long art videos, HD image and PSD files will be DMed on my Patreon on Dec 5th :)
I think any attempt to define modern ttrpg 'cultures of play' is a failure if it doesn't classify "5e/critrole fandom" as its own thing largely disconnected from other ttrpg (or analogue game) play-cultures, and instead largely drawing from fandom and fanfic subcultures.

Frederick Mackenzie, The Library of Stanmore Hall, the Seat of Robert Holland, Esq, watercolor.
One thing I've been doing for Girl Frame (my mechspoitation/lesbian mech pilot ttrpg) is basically trying to make rules for the characters that get in their way more than they help them
I've been reading Jay Dragon's Expressionist Manifesto, which talks about tension between what the player might want to do and the rules of the game. Rules not so much as an aid but as a restriction that has to be fought against or worked around to achieve your player goals
That led me to the special play for the Mockingbird Girl Playbook:
Congrats to autistic trans girls for making this my most noted post ever lmao
