honestly given my parents whole [gestures vaguely] i am actually incredibly well adjusted
My biggest tip for fanfic writers is this: if you get a character's mannerisms and speech pattern down, you can make them do pretty much whatever you want and it'll feel in character.
Logic: Characters, just like real people, are mallable. There is typically very little that's so truly, heinously out of character that you absolutely cannot make it work under any circumstance. In addition, most fans are also willing to accept characterization stretches if it makes the fic work. Yeah, we all know the villain and the hero wouldn't cuddle for warmth in canon. But if they did do that, how would they do it?
What counts is often not so much 'would the character do this?' and more 'if the character did do this, how would they do it?' If you get 'how' part right, your readers will probably be willing to buy the rest, because it will still feel like their favourite character. But if it doesn't feel like the character anymore, why are they even reading the fic?
Worry less about whether a character would do something, and more about how they'd sound while doing it.
I don't remember where I saw this piece of advice so I can't credit it, unfortunately
But it was along the lines of "instead of asking whether something is out of character, ask 'what would it take for this character to do this'"
Which I think fits really nicely with this advice of making the actual action itself also feel in character
Once again recommending that writers, especially newer writers, start ‘rubber ducking’
When you’re stumped and you don’t know what’s not working for your writing, or you don’t know where to go next, take out a rubber duck (or any equivalent friend/inanimate object, I like to use my dogs) and start explaining every single detail as if the rubber duck knows nothing about writing or about your story. Explain out loud what’s going on, what part you’re up to, why you’re stumped, and what you know you need to get to when you figure out how to get there
Somewhere along the line of putting it into words and externalising the thought process, it’s likely something will slot into place

So at the end of Tristano Panciatichiano, Tristan is on his deathbed after Mark struck him with a poisoned lance, and he asks Isolde to die with him because "how could it be that Yseut lives without Tristan?" and she agrees and then he embraces her with such force that she is crushed to death
and I suddenly understand very clearly what people mean when they say "romance as horror"

"hey why are all the barrier garments like linen shirts or chemises or combinations going away?"
"oh we have more washable fabrics now! you don't need to worry about sweat reaching your outer clothing when you can just chuck it in the washing machine!"
"cool!"
[100 years later]
"so uh all of those new washable fabrics are leaching microplastics into our water, and the constant machine-washing wears garments out faster. they're also not really sturdy enough to be mended, so we keep having to throw them out and now the planet is covered in plastic fabric waste that will never break down. also it turns out that the new washable fabrics hold odor-causing bacteria VERY well. so could we get those barrier garments back please?"
"sorry babe linen now costs $100000/yard and since it's been so long without them, nobody knows how to adapt barrier garments to the current styles anyway"
"..."
"maybe try this new $50 undershirt made of Special Sweat-Wicking Plastic Fabric! :) :) :)"

Thinking about THE GREEN KNIGHT recently
sometimes the best writing advice is "just let it be bad." revolutionary. terrifying. but it works.
fans of classics of the literary canon are the most lucky ppl because we have boatloads of high quality "meta" (journal articles) written by the most insane unwell "stans" (professors of literature) in a massive ongoing "fandom" (academic conversation) going back like 100+ years depending on your book. typically very high-toned argument and structure as well which satisfies my personal tastes exceedingly. the amount of preposterous unsupported reaching and rate of offensive/borderline evil takes is the same as regular fandom meta though or even more maybe which is what makes it extra delightful

Franz Kafka, from a letter to Felice Bauer written in 1913, featured in Letters To Felice
Another “he would not fucking say that” variation in fandom that I notice myself muttering is “she would not have enormous tits”.
