Everyone always leaves. No goodbyes, no telling me- they just go.❞ She turned away, her small frame shaking, ❝You left. It wasn’t any different. My parents left, then you left— and from then, everyone else did too.❞

He stayed silent as he watched her closely. A pang of guilt ran through him at her words, the accusations. It wasn't true, at least not all of it.

"Susan." His voice held a mild pleading tone, and he swallowed thickly. "That's not true, and you know it." Lies. All lies. "I only left you so you could live your own life! I wanted you to be happy. You didn't need me to bring you down." John paused as pain flickered in his eyes.

"I know our relationship can never be fixed, but I always wondered if my decision was right." It wasn't. He still regrets it to this day. "It was hard, both for you and I. You're never alone, Susan. I wanted to go back but I..couldn't." He was making it worse, but he needed to let her know.

Pattie turned her face at him with a rather confused expression on her face. Verily, the way he acted cool about her smoking and spoke about his own thoughts on school made him sound more like one of the other students, rather than one of the teachers. Of course, it was much better for Pattie to speak with someone who shared these kinds of thoughts with her than to one of those severe professors, but yet it was very odd to hear this coming from the person who was just giving her a physics class about ten minutes before.

”This is… so odd.” she said with a slight, confused frown, taking a drag from her cigarette and saving the smoke in her lungs to speak. “I mean… If you really think this… Why do you work as a teacher?”

John gazed at her momentarily, the corners of his mouth twitching into a smile. Odd. That word seemed to amuse him for some reason. And he agreed with her, it was odd. For her, anyway.

"I suppose I've always been a teacher. I can't seem to get away from it. Think about it this way. One ends up doing something they've always done, and suddenly they come to hate it, yet they still do it. It's just..natural, ya know?" He gave her a shrug then smiled lazily.

"Anyway. Wanna scram, Pattie? Or d'ya have a ride?"
