Jen looked at the screen of her terminal without really reading what was in it.
She had just gotten out of a three-hours-long meeting with some superior officers, the other rangers, and Alex.
They were now part of a task force and had been relocated to a large room so they could work together closely. While other officers presented the information they had, Jen’s eyes kept falling back on Alex. She tried to pay attention to what was being said, but he looked so sad. She was sure the others thought he was just serious and focused but she could see it in his eyes. His gaze kept falling on the table, and his eyes would lose all light. He would then blink and look at the officer talking.
She knew she was the reason for that sadness because he was the reason for hers. Her heart broke anew every morning when she woke up alone on their bed, in their apartment.
She truly thought she was in love with Wes, she really did. She honestly thought she had fallen in love with him, she let herself believe she was willing to change the way she lived her life, her routine, her attitude, to fit him and be happy with him.
But as soon as she returned to the future, she had gone back to everything as if she hadn’t spent a single day in the past. She had gone back to her routine, to her way of working, to her attitude, to her habits. The only change in her life was that Alex wasn’t in it anymore. She knew, and accepted, that, out of the pressure-cooker situation she had lived with Wes, she would never have considered a life with him.Â
She looked at Alex, who was at his desk, his terminal also on. He didn’t seem to be reading his terminal any more than she was, and he just looked so broken.
She felt the urge to go to him, to hug him, to kiss him, to ask for forgiveness, for a second chance. She felt the urge to go to him and ask him to be her whole world again.
He looked at her, and her feelings must have shown on her face because his expression went from sad to concerned. She held his gaze for a couple of seconds and then looked away.
He got up and walked to her.
“Do you want some coffee, Scotts?” He asked when he got to her desk.
Scotts. Not Jen. Not dear. Not love. Not Jennifer, in that loving way he used to call her by her full name. Just Scotts.
“Sure,” she whispered back and turned off her terminal, locking it.
He waited for her, and they walked out of the office. They made it to the elevator in silence. The doors opened, and they got in.
Alex made a sound that sounded like a sniff, and Jen looked at him. His eyes were redened, like he was about to start crying. She felt her own eyes well up. She wanted to hug him, she wanted him to hug her. He was right there; she just had to move, to wrap her arms around him, to let him wrap his arms around her.Â
But she didn’t. They stood in silence as the elevator descended.
It was torture.
They reached the bottom floor, and Alex led her out of the elevator and out the front door, to the quaint diner across the street, where they had eaten together whenever they could, just looking at each other, happy, in love.
They sat in their old booth, still in silence.
The waitress came to assist them. They ordered their coffee, and it took her a couple of minutes to return with them. While they waited, they looked out the window as it began to rain.
As the water started to hit the window, with a soft and melodic sound, Jen felt herself break with every drop. She was about to burst. She couldn’t sit there in silence anymore. She couldn’t breathe. She couldn’t think. She was going to crash out. She was going to break.
And then she felt it. His hand on hers, soft, barely touching hers. She turned to him, and he was looking at her.
“How are you holding up?” He asked, moving his hand away now that he had her attention.
“Not very well,” she said, her throat choked.
“Me neither.”
The admission was clear. It was simple. She didn’t need any more. He still trusted her, he still loved her, he still felt safe with her.
“Alex…”
He looked out the window, a single tear sliding down his cheek. He dried his cheek swiftly. “It’s all so tragic,” he said.
“Why?”
“Why what?”
“Why did you let me?”
She surprised herself with the question. That’s not what she meant; that’s not what she wanted to ask. It wasn’t his fault; she was the one who had been unfaithful.
“Why did I let you what?” He looked at her, his eyes still sad. “Go?”
The words escaped her mouth before she even knew what they were. “Fall in love with him.”
He sniffed. “And how was I supposed to stop you from falling in love with him?”
“I don’t know,” she admitted, and swallowed hard. “Why didn’t you send me a message? Why didn’t you tell me you had come back from the dead?”
“Jennifer,” he whispered, taking her hand again. “I never died.”
She felt her breathing get shallow and her throat close. If he had never died, then she had truly betrayed him. “What?”
“I was taken to the hospital even before you took the time ship. I was in a coma for a couple of weeks, my life hanging from a thread. But I recovered. I told you.”
“You didn’t. You didn’t tell me.”
The world was bending over her, nothing made sense. He had died. He had died in her arms.Â
Memories from that day came back to her, she was holding him, crying, and someone had pulled her away from him. She had thought it was Katie, but it hadn’t been Katie. He was right. The medical emergency team had taken over him as she turned and told the others they were going after Ransik.
“I did. When I went to the past, I told you I barely survived Ransik’s attack.”
She remembered. She had hugged him tightly. He had said exactly that: “I barely survived Ransik’s attack”.
“Alex…”
Tears began streaming down her cheeks, and when she looked at him, she saw he was crying too.
She moved to dry his tears, and he stopped her, taking her hand in both of his.
“Why didn’t anyone tell me? Why didn’t you tell me?”
“It would have been a personal communication, Jen.”
The answer hit her like a brick. All the time she had spent in the past had technically been on an active shift. He couldn’t use the Time Force system to make a personal communication with an officer in an active shift, and he had no other way to contact her.
“It was an active shift…” She heard herself say, feeling nauseous. “I was on active duty…”
“Yes.”
“We were on active duty…”
“Yes.”
He put her hand on the table and used his thumb to dry her cheek.
“We were on active duty. Our personal issues would have to wait–”
“Until the shift ended.”
“Yeah.”
“Alex…”
“I saw you. I saw how you got over me. I mean… I couldn’t really blame you; you thought I was gone. I wouldn’t have expected any less.”
“That’s why you were so cold…”
“I was jealous,” he admitted. “Of course, I was jealous, and I was so frustrated because… my hands were tied. I was muzzled. I wanted you, I wanted to talk to you about our plans, about us, just to see if there was still something there, something we could work through. But I couldn’t.”
Jen felt herself break. She couldn’t breathe. She felt like she was drowning. She had lost everything, her happiness, her marriage, her future… to an active shift. She had lost Alex to the same thing that had given him to her: Time Force.
She heard herself wail. Not too loud. Just a short, small cry.Â
Alex slid out of his side of the booth and into hers, wrapping his arms around her, softly rocking her, cooing.
“Alex…”
“It’s okay. It’s okay. I wish I could make it happen for you. I would move heaven and earth, Jennifer. I will find a way to make it happen for you. I promise I’ll get you to Wes, and Time Force will never bother you again.”
She wanted to tell him he could make it happen for her, that he didn’t need to get her to Wes. That he just needed to go home with her, to sleep next to her, to wake up next to her. She didn’t want to go back to the past, she wanted her ring back.
She couldn’t speak, so she did the next best thing. She wrapped her arms around him, burying her face in his neck, squeezing him as hard as she could.
She was a storm at sea. And so was Wes.
She didn’t need another storm. She didn’t want another storm.
She wanted a lighthouse. A safe shore.
She wanted Alex.
“I will make it happen for you.”
She hugged him, still crying. She heard him sniff.
“Alex…”
“It’s okay, Jen. It’s okay.”
She finally found her voice: “It’s not.”
“You thought I was dead, you had to move on. He’s a good man; he will make you happy.”
“He will drive me crazy,” she said.”I am not who I was back then. That’s not me. You know that’s not me.” She let go of him and moved away, so she could look at his face. “You know that’s not me. I wake up at five a.m., I drink my coffee black and unsweetened. I train for ninety minutes. I have a light breakfast. I take a shower, put on my uniform, get on my bike…”
Her gaze was no longer on him, it was gone to some point in the distance. “I work my shift, I train another ninety minutes, I have dinner, I go to sleep… I stay in bed on Sundays. I walked around the apartment in my underwear. I have trouble relaxing. I am not good with jokes, and I find pranks tasteless…”
Alex grabbed her by the shoulders and shook her but she was locked in her train of thought.
“I am not… who he made me. I am me. I am yours.” She finally looked at him and put her hand on his cheek. “I am yours. I am your girlfriend. I am your girlfriend. We wake up at the same time. We training together. We drink the same coffee. We have the same breakfast.”
“Jennifer…”
“That is not my life. Who I was then… it’s not my life. It’s not me. It was just a shift.”
He dried her cheeks and caressed her hair away from her face.
“And you woke up alone,” she said, softly caressing his cheek. “You woke up alone.”
“I sent you after Ransik.”
“And I didn’t even wait to know if you were truly dead.”
“Time was of the essence, Jennifer.”
“And you woke up alone.”
“And I woke up alone, yes. But I knew you wouldn’t rest until you got him.”
She looked at him, and his eyes were sad again. “This is wrong. This is not…This is not how it’s meant to be.”
He kissed her on the forehead. “It’s not your fault. It is the consequence of my actions.”
“It is the consequence of OUR actions.”
She cuddled against him again, her face buried in his neck, her arms around his ribcage. That felt right. That felt safe. That felt calm.
That was home.
He kissed the top of her head again, and she kissed his neck, then his jaw.
He looked down at her, and she kissed his lips.
And he kissed her back.
They stayed like that, lips pressed against each other’s, soft, sweet, tender.
“My shift is over, Alex,” she whispered. “I’m ready to go home. I am so tired.”
He hugged her tightly. “Let me take the burden. I’ll take care of it. You are home now, Jen.”
She looked at him, and he caressed her hair away from her face again.
“You are home, honey.”
“I lost my ring. I’m sorry.”
“I’ll get you another one.”
“I am yours. You are my home.”
“And I am yours. You are my home.” He kissed her again.
“I adore you,” she said and kissed him in turn.Â
“It’s you and me,” he whispered.
“Forever.”
They hugged for a while longer, the coffee forgotten and cold on the table. The rain outside kept pouring, but they were safe and warm.

Casey double checked his uniform was properly on and walked out of the room.
He was distractedly looking at the logo of his cap, wondering if RJ had really put marijuana leaves on it, when he crashed into his boss.
“Sorry!” he said, looking up. He tried to walk past RJ, but the boss stopped him, pulling him back by the scruff of his neck.
“Woah! Woah! Woah! Woah!”
“What?”
“Where do you think you're going?”RJ asked.
Casey panicked. Had he mixed up training and working time?
He really wanted to give a good impression to his new Master.
“To work?” He said tentatively.
“Not looking like that you're not.”
Casey looked down at his uniform: His brand-new zebra-print pants were still impeccable, his shirt wasn't wrinkled, his shoes were clean. He looked at RJ, panicked.
“What's wrong with my uniform?”
“Oh, your uniform is fine,” RJ dismissed. “But you're not serving my restaurant with your hair like that.”
“You didn't say anything about a net--”
“A net? Not in my restaurant!” RJ shuddered at the thought. He then loosely pointed at the top of Casey's head. “I meant the dweeb hairdo. I can't have someone with that hairdo serve at my restaurant. It's not much, but I have a reputation to keep.”
“What's wrong with my hair?”
“It's flat.”
“Flat?”
“Yeah.”
“Oh, do you think you can style it better?”
“Yeah.”
“How lond has it been since you last had short hair?”
“My hair is short now,” RJ said, his face looking disconcerted.
“I mean this short, RJ,” Casey said, pointing at his head.
“Oh... ages. That doesn't mean I don't know whow to style it. What if I decided to just cut my hair off? I like to stay ahead of things.”
Casey thought the only situation in which RJ would suddenly decide to cut his hair probably involved a lot of weird-smelling smoke but said nothing.
“What do you think I should do to it?” He asked instead.
“Come here,” the chef said, leading Casey back to his room. He looked around for any styling product Casey may have, but he didn't really have any.
RJ told him to wait and walked out of the room. “I'm gonna be late for my shift!” Casey called after him.
“I'll put a word in with your boss!” RJ called back.
The chef was back a moment later, holding a tub of hair gel. “Good thing Theo has a better sense of style.”
“He'll know we touched it.”
“We'll pay him back,” RJ said, letting out a soft breathy laugh after. “Okay.” He opened the tub and offered it to Casey. “Take a bit on your fingers, just a bit, good...”
RJ guided Casey through the steps to style his hair and make it look cooler. The boss even asked if he could touch Casey's hair and showed him how to move his fingers through it.
“Wow,” Casey let out after they were done. “That really does look much better.” He smiled at RJ.
“Told ya,” The chef said back with a smirk.
“Can I go now? My boss is going to kill me.”
“It was just a couple of minutes, Casey, I don't mind.”
Robbie on Robbie #27: "I am the darkness and the light"
(From "All my life")
"Wolf Master," Dai Shi snarled as RJ positioned himself between him and the fallen rangers.
"Jarrod."
"I am Dai Shi."
"Whatever you say, Jarrod."
"RJ!" Casey called from behind him. "Stop pissing him off!"
Much to his anger, Dai Shi saw the smirk the Wolf Master couldn't hide. "Surrender to me and I'll spare your students!"
"Why would I surrender to someone I can easily defeat?" RJ asked, shaking his head.
"You can't defeat me! Not even your wolf spirit is strong enough!"
"My wolf spirit may not be strong enough but your ego is so fragile, I only need my pinky."
"You will be sorry for this!"
"I'm sure I will."
Dai Shi took his battle stance and so did RJ. The demon attacked with agility and raw power, but RJ managed to stay away from his fist for far longer than the demon would admit.
Finally, frustrated and angry, the demon grabbed RJ by the neck and lifted him off his feet.
"RJ!" The rangers called, trying to get back on their feet. Much to their surprise, RJ wasn't above hitting Dai Shi in the groin. The demon dropped him, as his human body twitched with pain.
But RJ gave him no respite. The Master attacked viciously, hitting Dai Shi repeatedly, and kicking him across the rock quarry.
As the demon struggled to get up, RJ approached him, a look of pure contempt on his face.
"The Pai Zhua would never attack an enemy while he's down."
"I honestly never understood that policy," RJ replied. He proceeded to attack Dai Shi again, and the demon barely made it away from him.
"You and I are not so different, Wolf Master," he growled.
"You don't understand me," RJ told him. "You will never understand me. You've never fought me before, and I'm not like the other Masters. I am the darkness and the light, Dai Shi, I am not fully in the Pai Zhua's control."
That seemed to have inspired Dai Shi to attack him again. Once again, the Master was too much for him. RJ proceeded to kick him away again.
"You can't win," he said, his voice low and growly.
"Neither can you!" The demon replied.
"We'll see about that," RJ said, getting back in position.
This scared the demon and he teleported away.
RJ turned around to find three very frightened students. He approached them and they flinched.
"RJ..." Casey started but he didn't know how to continue.
"Are you guys okay?" The Master asked from where he was.
"What the hell?" Theo let out before he could stop himself.
RJ closed his eyes and sighed. "What scared you this much, exactly?" He asked his students.
This time, Lily spoke first: "That was... why did you... I guess we weren't expecting that from you."
RJ smirked again. "I can get quite protective of my pack," he started. "Perks of the wolf spirit."
"Is that... anger... something you struggle with constantly?" Casey asked, his face ashen.
RJ smiled sweetly. "No," he replied. "As long as nobody is trying to kill my children."
"We're not your children," Theo said.
"Yes, you are," RJ said with a tone that indicated that was the end of that conversation. "Can you guys walk?"
"Yeah"
"Yes"
"Sure."
"Good. Let's go home."
"You are the darkness and the light..." Casey repeated.
"I am going to be honest, I don't necessarily play by the Pai Zhua's rules but never when I'm dealing with students. You guys are safe with me, and, most importantly, you are safe from me."
The three rangers nodded and he smiled again. "Let's go home."

For clarification's sake, is this true everywhere? I ask because I know that different countries have different quality home electricity provision; American home electricity Ain't Great compared with most of Europe, for example. In Wales I have never heard of this being a Thing, but our electricity comes in 240V flavour, so possibly the higher current naturally avoids this issue?
My British husband (not an electrician but electrician-adjacent) says yes this is true in the UK as well - anything that uses a lot of power should be plugged directly into the wall rather than an extension lead

My biggest tip for fanfic writers is this: if you get a character's mannerisms and speech pattern down, you can make them do pretty much whatever you want and it'll feel in character.
Logic: Characters, just like real people, are mallable. There is typically very little that's so truly, heinously out of character that you absolutely cannot make it work under any circumstance. In addition, most fans are also willing to accept characterization stretches if it makes the fic work. Yeah, we all know the villain and the hero wouldn't cuddle for warmth in canon. But if they did do that, how would they do it?
What counts is often not so much 'would the character do this?' and more 'if the character did do this, how would they do it?' If you get 'how' part right, your readers will probably be willing to buy the rest, because it will still feel like their favourite character. But if it doesn't feel like the character anymore, why are they even reading the fic?
Worry less about whether a character would do something, and more about how they'd sound while doing it.
I was today years old when I learned that when you type “otp: true” in AO3 search results it filters out fics with additional ships, leaving only the fics where your otp is the main ship
I’ve seen a lot of posts saying, “We need AO3 to let us leave multiple kudos on one work,” “We should be able to leave kudos on every chapter,” or “I wish I could give another kudos on this work.”
You want to give more kudos?
Well… you can!
Not by clicking a button — but by leaving a comment.
Authors love comments.
If you want to give kudos to each chapter of a multichapter story, write “chapter kudos” in the comments or leave a 💜. Believe me, the author will love it.
If you reread a story and want to leave kudos again — do it! Write a comment. You can say “kudos again” or “I reread your story, kudos again 💕.” The author will love it!
No, the author will not be annoyed if you come back a year later, reread the story, and leave a heart again 💜. They’ll be happy that their work is being reread and loved.
Why is it a bad idea to have a button for multiple kudos on AO3?
Because AO3 is not social media. It’s not designed to focus on getting as many kudos (likes) as possible.
Some authors might ask their friends to boost their kudos. Others might make their chapters shorter — posting more chapters instead of longer ones — just to get more likes.
That way, kudos wouldn’t mean much anymore.
Also, what about one shots or short multichapter stories? Longer stories would automatically get more kudos, while a one shot would only get one. That would push one shots further down if people filter by kudos.
AO3 is right to allow only one kudos per work.
Leave authors comments! You don’t need to write anything long. If you’re shy or don’t know what to say, that’s okay. Even small comments like “good job,” “nice story,” “love it,” or “chapter kudos” are enough.
For many authors, a kind comment means more than a click on the kudos button — and it’s really motivating. 🌸💕
Reading back the fanfic I have published here (most of it is stream of consciousness, first drafts) and seeing all the missing words and letters and spelling mistakes highlights how much I needed my MS and other brain medication. For months I didn't even notice those words were missing but after just one month of intensive treatment, they are so obvious to me. I feel like MS is robbing me of my sanity and my mind and I hate it so much.

Day 1. Right now I’m working on rewriting a fanfic I started back in the 00’s and never finished. I liked the main premise so I changed the characters and the setting.
It’s about two rangers who work for a Sherlock Holmes themed intelligence agency and find themselves having to overcome 12 tasks, themed after Hercules labors and the zodiac, as described in Alice Bailey’s Journey to the Soul.
So, Robbie Williams released a new album back in February but I was too busy moving back to Venezuela so it's only now I've been able to farm it for quotes to make five new chapters of Robbie on Robbie. Maybe ten.
Maybe.
