Some of the greatest treasures these two have found in their travels were a working film projector and a box full of mostly intact film reels - Invasion of the Body Snatchers and To Catch a Thief, to be precise. It takes them two days to wire the generators and get it up and running, but it’s totally worth it. 

After discovering the red/green/yellow code they’ve got going on, I feel like these two probably have a lot of failsafes and codes for every possible scenario. If history repeats itself at the Railroad, if they’re being followed, if they’ve been compromised etc. Not even the rest of the railroad knows about these codes. They’re to keep each other safe, specifically. 

However, the two of them learn to read body language and facial features a lot more quickly in this verse than others. LBR; in their line of work, they kind of have to. They can have entire conversations with each other without saying a word.

For a long time, he’s not exactly certain where they stand - if she loves him, if they’re supposed to be exclusive to one another, if he’s being manipulated. The few times he thinks to ask, he loses his nerve. At some point he decides that whatever it is, he enjoys it, and ceases trying to define it in those ways. Later, much later he realizes that he loves her, but probably never tells her.

Because of this, he is entirely unaware of any inner turmoil Inara is suffering with regards to him and their relationship. He has no idea that she feels old when she’s with him, or that she doesn’t care whether she lives or dies, or that she compares herself to him. He operates under the assumption that she is as confident as she projects herself to be. If he knew about it, he’d be crestfallen.

Despite all this, I do think they help each other when they can. When doing so isn’t completely antithetical to their own goals. For example, Owen is quick to sponsor any Warden effort that would cure the taint or raise her influence, even some of the morally questionable ones.

I’m not going to bother mentioning everyone again bc y’all already know I owe you and you’re probably tired of my shit by now, but in case anyone is curious how much I’ve actually done, it’s all under the cut.
