Shadow and Bone season 2 Rant
BARNES: Well, in the books there’s more clues [about their conflict]. She’s got all this attention. She doesn’t want it and it doesn’t seem to be getting her anywhere. There’s sort of a political infighting. And she’s like, ‘Well, if I could just use my power and just make everything how I wanted it…’ Then she realizes that’s what he’s been preaching this whole time. So we don’t really get into a lot of that in this season, because it’s thick, and we’ve got stuff to get on with.
JESSIE MEI LI: I love playing Alina. In Season 1, I felt like, “Okay, I’ve got the easiest job, really. It’s an audience surrogate character.” And I didn’t feel like Alina had so many traits from the books that were important to carry over to the show. My other castmates had so many little idiosyncratic things about the characters. And then, actually, what I then found was that it’s actually very challenging playing Alina. Her story has essentially been cut down to the bare minimum. There’s so much going on in the show.
Many people here might not like me saying this but this has been irking me a lot. Imagine having a show where you don't have the time to flesh out your main character. It's pretty obvious that the writers mostly care about SoC and SaB is the bridge for their spinoff but the fact that they're not even trying to hide it...both the actors playing the MCs noticed that and commented on it, is just shitty yk. Like I'm sorry but the "cut down to bare minimum" is sad because I remember Jessie being excited about exploring Alina's shu heritage in s2 but that was cut out for the 75 other obviously more important storylines.
Anyway, Jessie nailed the role and deserves all the appreciation for managing to shine even with the utterly writing.
Man, they are not even hiding the saltiness there 💀🤣🤣🤣
