this is getting some attention again, so for all of you who are writing “i have the green couch already, can i give up now?!’ the answer is no. the green couch is a metaphor. your one job in this wild and precious life is to dream things for yourself, always: a college degree, more friends, your art in a show, that book you keep promising you’ll finally finish writing, your first trip abroad, a happy life with your loved ones, the day you wake and realise you have new wrinkles and not feeling anything but so, so proud that you have lived long enough for your body to show how far you’ve come. so no, girlie with the dark green couch, you cannot give up. it is time for the next dream

i want to shake many young women and say you can grow in private. and what i mean by that is that you don’t have to publicly self-flagellate when you don’t know something or when you say something a little insensitive or whatever else. you don’t have to report your Bad Thoughts and Ignorance to the crowd who waits to judge you. you do not have to pay penance. you do not have to issue public statements. nothing more is gained from burying yourself in shame than you could gain by thinking “oh i don’t know about this” and looking it up real quick, or thinking “hm, that wasn’t how i want to behave, i’ll do different next time” and then moving on with your life. no need to choke yourself with it.

This is something I worry about for Today’s Youth. There’s this expectation that you do all of your thinking and growing out loud on social media and that you broadcast all of your thoughts and opinions. Sometimes your thoughts and opinions are wrong (at every age! not just when you’re young!) but now they’re out there for all to dig up and read. Not to be a boomer (elder millennial) but I think that this loss of interiority is a bad thing. I am joining op in shaking people: you don’t need to post about it. Things can happen in the privacy of your own reading and your own mind.

ive recently been able to get over my sensory issues regarding moisturizer by literally just saying "im going snail mode"

they really gave us a female lead in a star wars movie & made her kind and good and angry and powerful and complex & then spent the next 2 movies revolving almost her entire storyline around a white male war criminal who abused her, abused her friends, abused her family. all the while validating all the people who romanticized gaslighting and torture. for fan service lmao 

they also gave us a strong black male lead who was kind and rebelled against his entire way of life when he saw the atrocities he was expected to take part in. He risked his life to save others and was shown to love and care deeply for his friends and willing to sacrifice himself to save him. Then the next two movies infantilize him to be this weak self preserving side character with literally no agency beyond yelling other character’s names.

They also gave us a Latino sci-fi hero who was an ace fighter pilot with a heart of gold and a wealth of courage who showed an incredible amount of support and kindness and trust towards a man who he had just met. Then the next two movies relegated him to being a chronic fuck-up and then ret-conned his ace pilot backstory in service of a racist drug dealer backstory to make him more like Han Solo
